When does summer shopping start? (ETA: I learned something!)

I am usually so far behind season things are picked over by the time I start looking. That's because I usually wait until it is actually the season...like I have been inclined to look for summer clothes in June. Seems reasonable? Not according to reality...and Angie.

So...I see T-shirts already, and some lightweight tops. When do really hot weather, summer weight pants hit the stores?

Now? I'm seeing lots of light drapey linen pants and summer sandals creeping in over the past week or so.

I've been seeing quite a few shorts and boots are almost totally replaced by sandals. Lots of summer wear seems to be available now.

Ditto. I'm seeing lots of summer items. I've been doing lots of research to snag my ideal sandals while the selection is good. Maybe you should take the plunge?

I always have a hard time shopping for the next season, anyone else? I feel like I need to switch out my winter for summer wardrobe before I can really shop thoughtfully. Hmm, well, maybe I can put away the heavy sweaters and tall boots to bring in sleeveless tops and sandals, but I fear that might bring on a snowstorm!

i'm wondering if summer is really coming…..where i live, last summer wasn't really much of a summer, i don't think we got much over 80F most of last summer. so, with the memory of a cool summer, and a winter that won't let go, i'm finding it hard to think about buying anything for summer!

At the the risk of sounding like I'm bitching about the weather (I'm really not, just noting how weird this year has been)... The cherry blossom festival in DC will barely have any blooms yet! The trees are barely even budding around here, and now there is talk of another snowstorm later this week. Two years ago, the trees were in near full bloom on St Patrick's Day. It's really hard to get my head around warm-weather style right now!

I completely agree with Janet that it is hard to shop for a new season when that season's clothes are still in storage! We've had a few spring teaser days where I live but it doesn't actually feel like spring yet. I don't want to take my wool socks off to try on sandals, etc.

I'm pretty much done shopping...and I added a lot of new items (and immediately donated that number of older items in my closet plus a few more)...all I have left to look for is a pair of "comfy" open toe black flats and maybe a few Tshirts for weekend wear...whew...

Now all I have to look forward to is the annual Nordstrom Summer Sale for fall and winter LOL !!!

I have the same experience. Some shops start getting summer things as early as February, and if I want to get a nice bathing suit in my number I have to buy it in March, April the latest. ByJuly, when I wake up, everything is gone.

Here on the west coast it's gotten warm already, so buying for summer or at least warm spring hasn't seemed out of place. I'm sure it's been odd for those of you that are still getting snow and cold temps.

I started seeing sandals and shorts online and in the stores a couple of weeks ago, although there are still plenty of spring items too. I rounded out my warm weather shoe wardrobe this month with a couple of pairs of sandals and one pair of espadrilles. I haven't yet pulled out the shorts and white jeans from their storage place to do an assessment, although I may do so today or next weekend.

I don't understand swimsuits having a season, actually - so many people buy them to go on vacation or to use in pools all year round, so really they should be in stores all the time.

Spring stuff trickles in starting January, but more widespread it starts February. Right now is "mid-season". You'll start seeing primarily summer stuff in April, and into May but then it starts thinning out. If you need those items and want to start early, now is a good time

Well, I got my summer tops out today...really seems jumping the gun and I'm in the south! I don't think I'll be wearing these things for at least another month, but I guess it is good to see what I have, what I need, and start planning.

Last year I was in what a few of us called "forced shopping". I needed so many things due to not shopping much for a few years, but I just didn't see things I liked very much. I ended up buying some things I didn't love, just to be able to put clothes on. Getting them out this year I can already tell what I'm okay with and what I'm not not excited to wear. Love = about 10%, okay = about 50%, not happy with = about 40%.

This year is looking a little more hopeful...I've been browsing a bit and already see things I like better than last year. I'd like to replace the "not happy with" with some real loves. The "okays" can ride another season. So that tells me not to buy any more things that are just okay, because it is very likely they will be the not happy withs of the next year.

I guess the result of this thinking ahead is to realize that this year is only for loves and I really can afford to wait for them. No forced shopping, just eyes open for the "wow, I want that" items. Okay...not so much jumping the gun anymore. I think it was a useful exercise!

Like Janet I really struggle to buy for the season when I'm not actually living it at the time. I've placed an order today for some warmer weather things but I just can't tell whether they will actually work once the summer hits. I've kept a list from last year of things I wanted but tastes change and new looks tickle my fancy x

Thank you Peri. Because this thread, today I pulled the trigger on some sandals that I might have dithered on until they were gone. I won't wear them until 4th of July, but if I wait until June, I won't have them at all. This seems crazy to me. What the industry decides NOT to supply its customers with what it needs when it needs it? Another great mystery of fashion.
