What's the first bread recipe you ever made?

This was the first bread recipe I ever made. I clipped the recipe out of the newspaper. This was before I knew how to knead. I made it in an old avocado green Sunbeam stand mixer handed down to me by my mother. I would not make this now because of the can of French onion soup, unless I could find a homemade vegan version of it. That said, this bread is delicious.

I remember as a very young child helping my mom make Portuguese sweet bread. Great memory !

Probably mantou, which are the Chinese white steamed buns, with my mom. When filled, they are called baozi or just bao. The way I make them uses both yeast AND baking powder - hope that counts.

Here's a recipe for the filled ones that I like, complete with a tutorial on how to wrap them. For the plain ones you just make the dough part and form them into whatever shape you want.

I used to make White Bread Plus from Joy of Cooking, probably when I was in junior high or high school. It's very tasty.

Diana, when I was in grad school, my roommate was from Hong Kong, and we made cha siu bao (sp?), the barbeque pork filled steamed buns. She made the pork and I made the dough. They were delicious.

Cinnamon buns from my Mum's sweet yeast dough recipe. I was 19, in my second year of university, and living in my first apartment with a girlfriend.

I had helped my Mum make buns at home, but this was my first attempt on my own. I mixed the dough in a large pot because we didn't own a mixing bowl and baked them in our oven's broiling pan lined with foil. My cinnamon buns weren't as light as my Mum's, but they sure were a big hit with all my friends on that snowy Saturday.

ETA: Hey, Aileen, I also had a copy of The Joy Of Cooking back in university. It was my go-to cookbook until I fell in love with Julia Child's recipes in my senior year!

The Joy of Cooking was the only cookbook my mom used. It was the 1975 edition. My mom mostly cooked from scratch, without recipes, so I had to learn by getting in the kitchen with her.

My mom had the 1963 edition, I think. I have the 1975 edition. My mom had a lot of cookbooks. She gave me most of them when she moved into a retirement home. I like the ones that are put out by organizations such as church and clubs, that have my mom's own recipes. Some of them are old enough that her name is listed as Mrs. John Doe instead of Jane Doe.

My mom had lots of cookbooks. Joy of Cooking was the only one she ever used, though. The others did get given away when she got elderly and frail. I seem to have inherited her cookbook hoarding, lol. I control it by not having more cookbooks than my shelves and cabinets can hold. I have lots of built-in shelves and cabinets, though!

My first bread was a family recipe for oatmeal bread that is dark and sweet with molasses and a bit of brown sugar. I love that bread and could eat a whole loaf when it is fresh from the oven.

My mom has never been big on baking yeasted bread but we made a ton of quick breads - banana bread and zucchini bread and variations of same. Also biscuits - both the proper cut-in butter, roll out kind and the drop biscuit kind.

I remember when I was a kid, my mom had some kind of long-lived starter that needed to be kept alive in the fridge and 'fed' every few days, and she and the ladies from church would trade it back and forth. It wasn't sourdough starter; it made a kind of sweet bread, something with fruit, maybe. I think it was called friendship bread, because the whole idea was that you fed the starter, divided it in half, kept part and gave the other to a friend, etc. It was a baking pyramid scheme

Sounds like Friendship Bread to me. Why else would she have shared it with her friends?

Amish friendship bread. We were given it when I was a kid too, although my mom was not one for the passing it along part.

I'm not sure my mom uses a recipe? She just taught me to make bread when I was 8-9, maybe starting with dinner rolls?

First bread recipe (and one I still use!):

Dissolve 2tblsp yeast and 2tblsp sugar in 1 cup,warm water
Add 2 cups flour - stir, and let rise 1-2 hours

Measure 6 cups cold water
Mix flour 1-2 cups at a time with same amount of water until dough,is stiff and still slightly floury. Turn out onto counter and knead until elastic.
The trick to light, fluffy bread is to knead A LOT!

Put back in large bowl, smear top with a light coating of shortening, cover with wax paper and a towel, and let rise until double, about 1 1/2 -2'hours.

Punch down, cut up into 4-6 portions. Form into loaves, kneading an additional 20 turns, or roll pieces into balls the size of golf balls and place in a round cake pan.

Let rise 30-45 minutes.

Bake at 400deg. 30 min.

When out of oven rub tops with butter (which will melt). Mrepeat 5 min later.

Recipe makes 4 large loaves.

My first was the Joy of Cooking white bread, too! I don't know that I've made bread since I was 12, though. We used to play Little House on the Prairie a lot back then so I was really into making my own food.

My brother had a summer job at one of the Appalachian Mountain Club huts in New Hampshire (La Pedestrienne will know these!). They have to pack in all the food for guests, up a mountain with huge backpacks, so they're really frugal. There's oatmeal for breakfast each morning and then the leftovers are used to bake bread for dinner each night. He got pretty good at it.

I don't like the new Joy of Cooking, and not the white bread recipe at all... but it is the one I use, lol.

At our house, we eat 100% whole wheat bread about 99.99% of the time, so I scrounge to find recipes that don't incorporate regular flour into the mix.

A very simple beginner's yeast bread from http://www.thefreshloaf.com/lessons, a few years ago. Since then I've "advanced" to a six-strand challah braid from King Arthur.

I love the older versions of Joy, and collect old cookbooks. It's fun to find old Ladies Auxiliary type spiral bound books at used book sales.

My first bread, as a newlywed: I think it came from a mix bought at the precursor to the Bulk Barn. What I remember is, each time we made it, even though we lived in an obscur suburb, friends we hadn't seen in months would show up at the door, as if they could smell it clear across the city. So my impression of bread baking is, do it for fun, because you will eat it all up and then have to buy bread for your weekly use.
