What To Watch?

Hi Ladies,

I mentioned a while back we had signed up for Netflix:) I am really enjoying it! I love spending Sunday afternoons cuddled up in the winter watching a good drama or thriller... and have watched the 3 series of House of Cards and the 2 series of The Killing. I am thinking perhaps the next series to watch might be The Tunnel, which I have seen some of but didn't get through the whole series.

I wondered if you have any recommendations?

I have a preference for British Crime but the US series of The Killing was very good (is Seattle really that wet??) and impressed me. I like it edgy gritty and clever. I am open suggestions from other genres too.

So if there is anything you have seen that you could recommend, I would be most grateful.

This is a bit different to what you mentioned but have you seen Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries? You might have, on television. If not then watch it! The first two series are on Netflix and the third is just broadcasted in Australia. I got Netflix just to watch it. I only learned about it recently, it's pretty much unheard of here in Germany.

Thanks Astrid, I do love Miss Fisher! Mostly for the fashion lol. The crime is a little to 'polite' for my liking

Anne it's such a lovely series. It's filmed in Ballarat I believe, which is about 2 hours from me.

Agree, the fashion is awesome! I actually like that it's so 'polite'. It very much reminds me of Agatha Christie. I don't like how crass most of the other recent stuff has become (in books too). If it's good I'll watch it, but it's not my preference.

I love all of these and have repeat watched many of them several times

Looking back at your original post I'm not sure I'd call any of these gritty! It looks like I have a preference for olde worlde crime dramas x

You might like Wallander, Broadchurch, Dexter, The Wire, Peaky Blinders. The Bletchley Circle and Foyle's War aren't exactly gritty but I enjoy them for the historic aspect. Not sure if all are on Netflix at the moment, but they were at some point. Long live binge watching!

Yes, ditto to Justified! I'm on the final season now. How about True Detective? First season was intense. Second season (completely different cast and storyline) starts tonight. It's an HBO production, so I'm not sure about availability, but it's worth looking up. The Wire is brilliant, but I have mixed feelings about the association with my hometown.

Have you watched Top of the Lake? Also really good. Did you watch Breaking Bad? I've also been enjoying Orphan Black. The lead actress is amazing.

I've heard good things about Luther (Idris Elba!), Happy Valley, The Fall, and Penny Dreadful,. My husband liked Boardwalk Empire (I haven't delved into that one yet).

Another vote for both The Fall and Luther. There's a 3rd season of The Kiling too - maybe not on Netflix yet though. I binge-watched The Good Wife - all 5 seasons last winter and then watched season 6 in real time. Tried a few of the other British crime ones Janet mentioned but couldn't make it stick..

Breaking Bad and Mad Men were the best series I've seen. ( The Sopranos was amazing, too.) now that they're over, I feel a void! Watching the whole series at once is great but I loved looking forward to the next episode every week.

I haven't seen Orphan Black mentioned yet. We loved many of the ones listed above (and, no, Seattle is not nearly as wet as in The Killing--I think their rain machine was stuck on high), and Orphan Black is our new favorite. I'm adding a few new ones to my list based on recs above.

Broadchurch, Dicte (a Danish series,) and The Fall are series of that sort that I would recommend. And be sure to check out Appropriate Adult, a truly chilling series with an amazing performance by Emily Watson--I'd love to hear what you think of it!

Astrid, sorry I'm not sure if any of them are on Netflix as I don't have it, I should have put that on my post. I have most of the Poirot series' on DVD and the rest are often repeated on TV channels ITV3 and Drama x

I have seen Luther (Series 1/2/3) ), The Fall (Series 1/2), Broadchurch (series 1/2/3). Luther and The Fall are typical of my taste, I am so hoping for additional seasons of both. Another that's a little old is Wire In The Blood...still watch reruns of that. Love Robson Green.

Enjoyed Sherlock and Elementary (love Lucy Lui's style), found George Gently a bit boring:( despite being a big fan of Martin Shaw) . The others you mention Louise, are great but not quite edgy enough as you say:)

Meredith, I love Wallander but find him so melancholy that for a while I lost interest. But have been watching again and loving it. I'm interested in checking out The Wire.

Kiwigal, Game of Thrones is one I would like to look at, thanks for the reminder.

Breaking Bad is one I need to read up on. Not didn't appeal when it was first broadcast, but happy to reconsider.

Gail, I watched Happy Valley, that was compelling viewing. With a name like that I was not expecting what it turned out to be..

Deborah, I started watching Miss Fisher but stopped in the second series as DH didn't like it (too promiscuous) I certainly enjoyed the fashion, having not been much of a fan of 20's fashion prior to that (mostly because of how my real life ancestors looked in it).

I am the opposite of you - not liking gritty stuff at all. All the stuff people above recommended as more gentle is my style!!

I don't really feel I have time to watch Netflix! We did consider getting it but it would cost more than we spend on videos in a year. I don't even get to watch everything on free to air that I'd like too. And I mostly watch that on ABC Iview and tenplay. (pretty much only watch the Simpsons on TV when it is on, in my capacity as chaperone of my daughter!)

Deborah, I prefer "Henning Mankell's Wallander" to "Wallander". It's the Swedish production. You might want to check that out.

Oh, I have a few suggestions.

Highly highly recommend Game of Thrones and The Mentalist. Both are my favourites. I'm a huge fan of Simon Baker.

I also love Downton Abbey ( you'll have to resign to the slow pace, but I feel it's worth it)

I also enjoyed Numbers, Risoli and Isles, The Good Wife, Bones, Criminal Minds, and Body of Proof

You give me hope that someday I may have the ability to curl up on the sofa and watch TV. Remind me how old Master is these days? Bc mine are nearly 4 and nearly 3 and it seems sooo far off - but you seriously give me hope!!

Recently finished with 'Scandal', 'Damages' and 'Sherlock', can only recommend. Watching 'The Killing' at the moment. And already thinking what will watch next, so taking notes here:)

Watch Daredevil....it is great! Kinda bloody, like Justified, but binge worthy. justified was the BEST show ever and I "luv" Boyd!!
