what shoes are ok with socks?

Is there a general rule of thumb? Maybe ones that are high vamp? A friend is asking me about what shoes are ok with socks, specifically between flats and clogs, and yet not sneakers. Boots? Loafers?

I'm sure the answer is around the forum somewhere but I didn't find much when I did a search.

Boots, booties, high-vamp loafers/shoes. In general - if the pant leg covers the top of the shoe while standing, then I think socks are ok, provided they're in the same colour family as the shoe/pant-leg.

I might be totally wrong about this, but this is the general idea. For instance, I might wear some booties with a pair of bootcut or flare jeans, and as long as the socks are the same colour as the boots/booties or the pants, then it's all good. I would only wear socks with flats if they are the high-vamp kind and with pants that are PPL - where the socks wouldn't really show, unless you just happened to cross your legs while sitting or something.

Does that make sense?

Curious to see what other YLF'ers have to say on the topic.

I wear socks in all shoes you cannot see them - like boots and booties. I also wear socks with high vamp shoes like loafers and oxfords with bootcuts so they are not visible.
If I have to wear socks with other styles of shoes I go for nude hose socks.

the above I think are good guidelines. I also will wear a statement sock (usually bold stripes) with Mary Jane's, although this probably isn't the norm....

Like Sveta, I wear socks in all shoes where you cannot see them. I also wear them under pants, or else I wear secret socks of one sort or another in my closed toe shoes (like oxfords) since they rub my toes otherwise.

I also wear cute ankle socks or knee socks with oxfords and mary janes, although I know this is an eclectic look and not for everyone.

Exactly what VC and Sveta said. Plus I wear sheer (either nude or black) trouser socks with Mary Janes and ballet flats, because I live in a place where wearing socks is a must for 8 months of the year. Angie turned me on to the idea of sheer black trouser socks which I'm very thankful for.

I have a quite a lot of angst about this!

I too often wear sheer 'Socklings' under flat shoes in the in-between weather, for extra warmth and hygiene. I am very fussy though that they don't show above the shoe if paired with straight or skinny pants, unless they are calf or knee length!
Ordinary socks are great under boots for cosiness and padding in Winter.
