What kind of jacket to wear with dress over skinnies

I have a question about what kind of jacket to wear with a dress over skinny jeans...does the jacket have to fall below the hem of the dress? Does the same apply to a dress over leggings or could I wear a cropped denim jacket?

I think a cropped jacket would look really nice. If you are still somewhere warm and wearing white jeans under the dress, you could probably wear a blue denim jacket, or vice versa. Otherwise a cropped leather or wool jacket could be really cute.

I wear my denim and leather jacket over both these combos. If it was a coat any longer than either of these i'd make sure it more or less covered the dress, i wear my trench and there is a tiny bit of dress peaking out the bottom x
