What do you think of this fringe (bangs) style?

I am thinking of trying it...but I think in order to pull it off, you really need impeccable makeup, which I am not quite set with. I'm also not sure if my hair can ever look like that. I think I'm stick with straight, smooth, textureless hair unless I put in gobs of product, which I don't want to do.

The right or left picture? Or are they both the same cut and styled differently?

I don't think you need makeup, you already have big beautiful eyes.
Do you have pictures of yourself with fringe?

I just mean the general, messy style of both pictures. I thought since the style is messy, makeup and skin should look neat. I don't get enough sleep these days so unfortunately my eyes are quite tired looking and my skin is very uneven.

I have pictures, but they are very old. I think I was 17 or 18 when these were taken. Don't crucify me, this was probably 5 or 6 years before YLF!

You're such a pretty girl, I'm sure you could rock this hair style. What I think might be difficult, though, is with messy hairstyles (even purposely messy hair), your clothes and makeup have to be quite neat to give a balanced look. Because if the hair is artfully messy and the clothes are artfully messy, it doesn't look artful: it just looks like the woman rolled out off bed 2 minutes before. Just my opinion...

That's what I meant Mac. I completely agree. I'm not so good on the makeup front. I FINALLY found a tinted moisturizer, but I am not sure if that would be enough.

Anyway, I fear the fact that I was a cute teenager in those pictures might sway people's opinions :p I am older and um, rounder now. I'm surprised to see how slim my face was then. But I guess that is to be expected at sub-100 pounds...

Maya, I'm afraid your hair might be too straight for this look. Obviously you (and your stylist) know your hair better than I do, but that's the impression I have based on the pictures I've seen of you. And I'm not sure products would be the solution. My bangs are absurdly straight, and if I use any product on them they just get oily and clumpy by the end of the day.

I am with Renata, you should absolutely bring the bangs back, Maya! I don't know if the messy style is right for you though, but that straight strong bang is also very hot right now.

If your hair is like mine (and it really sounds like it is), I don't think you'll be able to keep the bangs artfully messy for more than, like, five minutes. BUT.....I do think you'd look good with bangs, you'll just need to work with your hair instead of against it.

I know the artfully messy look wouldn't work for me, and my hair sounds like yours. However, you looked amazing with bangs - I think they really made your beautiful eyes pop.

Maya, I think you look cute with bags but I don't see how you're going to get the artfully, messy bangs with your hair texture. They're probably just end up hanging straight across your forehead - do you like that look as well?

Maya, I respectfully disagree that you need great make-up. The wonderful thing about a good hair cut is that you can look really good without tons of make up. The pictures are for drama.

My hair sounds like yours - and I have lots of layers cut into my hair which is a little shorter than chin length. I started using L'oreal Aquanet ( at Target ) in super hold. This hairspray is freakin' amazing. It keeps my bangs and layers looking great and it combs out at night. It also helps if you spray your hair and then blow dry it.

Maya, I like this look but am doubtful that your straight hair could achieve the same effect without loads of product. I definitely see you as a "bangs" kind of girl though, so maybe shop around for some other styles?

Also, I see what you mean on the makeup front, but I disagree that YOU would need to wear more makeup to pull this off. I think your colouring and natural look (lovely skin, nice dark lashes, cool specs) is striking enough to counteract the fact that you don't wear a lot of makeup. If it was me though, I would feel like I'd need to step it up makeup-wise, because I'm very monochromatic with no real contrast in my colouring.

Oh, you guys don't know my natural texture at all! I blowdry my hair and pull a straightening iron through it every day. Otherwise, I would achieve the messy look quite effectively...though it would not be "artfully" messy. More like "just rolled out of bed" messy. I still really do think clean makeup and a fresh face is necessary to pull this look off. Otherwise, it just looks sloppy and careless. I do not have flawless skin by any stretch (who does?).

As for the blunt straight bangs: I don't think I could ever go back to those. On some people they look edgy and hip. On me, they look shy, mousey, and nerdy and also make me look about 10 years old. I feel like a kindergartner in them. I can't be convinced of taking that direction again.

Anyway, I could probably get mine to look messy easily by just not blowdrying them. They are already very textured in the pictures. But I'm not willing to risk having straight-across-the-forehead bangs again, and then having to grow them out.

Maya, learning that your hair is naturally a bit tously just clinches it for me - you should definitely do it.

Maya, I think you could do a messy look, but I would vote against bangs for you - I think they take too much real estate on your face. And yes, you could absolutely carry it out with your skin and eyes.

My hair isn't so much naturally tously (I wish it were) as naturally messy and frizzy (imagine what it would look like if every hair on your head dried independently in all different directions). So I guess I'm not really sure how these bangs would look on me. I think a lot of it is in how they are cut. I'm not too fearful when it comes to hair, but I just finished growing my bangs from the sideswept look that has been so "in" for the past several years, and it feels like torture to think of going through that again if they don't work out.

I'll have to think about it and ask my stylist what he thinks. My hesitation is that most stylists tend to be quite scissor happy and never say "no" to anything! At least they never say no to me...

I kind of like Penelope's bangs here. I often look to her because--dare I flatter myself--we have a few similarities (coloring, long neck, and eye color/shape). But I don't know if I could pull off such short bangs with my rather long nose.

Maya, It is all about mainenance...how much time are you willing to invest in the upkeep of these bangs not only daily, but they require more frequent salon visits to keep them....messy looking and out of your eyes:)

You look beautiful with or without bangs.... soooo it is really all about the time investment.

Ugh, that's a good point Taylor. I'm trying to get my hair cut only 4 times a year (so every 3 months), and my hair grows fast. I could go in for a bang trim in between though. I don't think I'd mind that. I can take care of it when I go for my eyebrows and get it done all at once

What would the daily maintenance involve?

I probably won't be getting my hair cut again until the end of June (or whenever it creeps a bit past my shoulders), so I have plenty of time to think about it.

I think that is a great idea...texturizing when you get those beautiful brows of yours re-arched:)

I am not so sure they would take alot of time each day but they will require a certain amount of fuss...and the wind is not a friend to bangs...my personal pet peeve:(

I remember having to brush out my bangs every time I came indoors, especially on windy days! Maybe since they're supposed to be messy anyway, it won't be so bad?

In the end, I think this is really about craving something new without having to cut my hair short again. I'd go for color if a) it wasn't so expensive and b) I could actually have any other color I'm so bored with my monotone hair. I envy those of you who can go from blonde to brown on a whim.

Maya, why do you think you can't add color? My hair is about as dark as yours... really...no need to go blonde, You could add caramel or chestnut shades. Have you had a bad outcome?

I think it's less to do with my hair color and more to do with my skin color/ethnicity. I'm just not sure what else would work without looking completely phony and silly. This may sound weird but I feel like people don't really judge my coloring well so it makes me nervous because I don't know if they will choose something that complements me. Whenever I ask for help with makeup, the assistants always seem to choose shades from the "tan" end of the spectrum and they are always at least 2 shades too dark. Unlike makeup though, hair color can't just be wiped away.

I understand your trepidation. Don't rule it out completely though. Lifting your hair just a couple of shades will keep it natural and SUBTLE looking...I think that is the key. Someday when you are feeling brave see a color specialist for a few subtle hightlights...:)
