What are your must have wardrobe items?

I'd like to hear (or read ) what items you consider to be an absolute must in every woman's wardrobe, regardless of her personal style. Ready for any occasion, but with bare minimum. How much of a challenge is it to come up with such list?

I'm thinking LBD, pretty day dress, great pencil skirt, classy white shirt, casual t shirt in basic colors, cardigan, a pair of jeans, statement item (if so, which one), comfy flats, elegant pumps, boots, few favorite accessories,...

I'll just go with my personal life not what the average woman might need.
Jeans
stylish tank for nights out
cropped fitted jacket to layer over those tanks
great soft sweater
boots
a pair of killer heels
all purpose wrap dress
khaki pencil skirt
a few cardis, camis and layer tees
flats or sneakers or sandals
shorts to go play in

My must have wardrobe items are jeans, blazers, scarves, long sleeve t's and cowboy boots. If I only had those items I'd be a happy gal.

Here is my list:

dress that can be dressed up or down in an all season fabric.
Jeans - Bootcut and Skinny
high waisted pencil skirt
Tops: both dressy and casual.
trenchcoat or similar all purpose outerwear.
wool coat, if needed.
plenty of shoes, including boots, heels and flats
substantial necklace
pair of black dressy pants - a necessity for me:)
proper undergarments
a killer bag

Oh, this is a great question - though I need time to think about my answer, as I am still trying to figure it out. Am going to compile a list of wardrobe holes based on answers here. Pencil skirt is first on the list!

I really don't know whether I could accurately decide what an essential is for every woman's wardrobe because the category can be so subjective depending on lifestyle and climate needs - per Angie's blog post today.

For my own needs right now, if I had to replace 100% of my wardrobe in one go and start from scratch, this would be my list.

*Two PERFECT bras
*Killer knee high boots
*Statement specs
*Moto jacket (leather or denim)
*"Statement" blazer
*Comfortable, colorful, low-heeled pumps (preferably 2 pair)
*Flat pair of shoes that I can walk in all day
*Gray or black pencil skirt
*Sheath dress in a neutral (or neutral-ish, such as burgundy) color - filling the "LBD" wardrobe category
*"Statement" dress in a bright color or bold, figure-flattering print
*Dark straight or gentle bootcut jeans (For someone else, this could be a non-denim pant in a casual fabrication)
*Skinny jeans for tucking into boots
*Denim bermuda shorts or clamdiggers
*Colorful crossbody handbag
*Solid colored "neutral" (to me, this was a soft mossy green) trench coat/rain coat
*White and black basic camisoles for layering
*Solid colored shell
*Boyfriend cardigan
*At least two colorful non-tee shirt knit tops
*One or two colorful woven tops (I'd prefer these to be "button down alternatives" that aren't truly button down style.)
*Voluminous, light-weight, patterned scarf
*Two chunky necklaces (preferably one in pearls)
*Two flannel pajama sets in a cheeky print
*Three pairs patterned hose
*Basic sets of underwear
*Umbrella in a cute print

Honestly, if I had to REALLY pare down my clothes for the same climate that I currently live in, this is probably what I'd end up with.

I don't think what you're asking for exists, to be perfectly honest. There is nothing that I can think of that is "an absolute must in every woman's wardrobe" or even most womens' wardrobes...unless you count underwear and sleepwear and such.

All I can think of is a minimum of 3 everyday perfectly fitted bras. Everything else is completely dependent on the person, where they live, and what their lifestyle, age, and personality is. Lists exist to make life simpler, but I must admit, I find these lists are actually make things harder and potentially lead to closet orphans and wasted money.

Scarves, good bras, comfortable shoes that make you smile, and one good coat that you can grab and go in a pinch, no matter what the season or temperature. Everything else is flexible.
