What Are Your Magnificent Fives?

After reading this Ines de la Fressange inspired list of essential "Parisian" style items, http://nymag.com/thecut/2011/0.....lide=85330
I thought it would be fun to share what are *our* own present adaptations.

Here are mine below:

1. The Blazer
My go-to blazer this season is not my most expensive one. It was a lucky purchase at Winners or Marshall's. But I find I reach for it because: it is like a cardi, soft and malleable; the crop is perfect on my tiny height; 3/4 sleeves let the underneath layer show, which changes its look every time.

2. The Trench
Well, although I do have a Spring-Summer navy and green trench, it is not adapted to my climate. This Fall-Winter season, I adore my thrifted angora coat, roomy enough for letting me wear blazers and heavy sweaters underneath, and surprisingly warm. I like it because it covers my legs. Again, due to climate, wearing it open might be chic in Paris but is out of question here.

3. The LBD
This season, *my* LBD is not a dress. It's a thrifted Prada black lace top that does the exact same job! Right now I am feeling a bit insecure about lower body and a LBD is too intimidating to contemplate for the Holidays. But a lace top is just as exciting, and I could also wear it with just a black tank for a sexier look.

4. The Perfect Jeans
Well, I found them. These are from a more high end boutique, but not too prohibitively expensive either. I am so happy with them. They are a classic boot cut, and they have all I am looking for in a pair of jeans: higher waist, dark wash, sexiness.

5. The Bag
This season I am a clutch girl. I found this one in a funky store and it wasn't very expensive (CAN$40) for the wear and the wow I'm getting out of it.

This is a great question. It saddens me though. I have a great blazer. I don't have a great any of the other items. I have things that fill a gap, but are all short of being magnificent.

Here are some thoughts on the magnificent five:
1. Blazers are my go-to piece. I love them. I feel secure in them. They function as a "shield" against the world. I have probably 8-9 blazers and I wear them constantly in the fall/winter. I am always on the hunt for more. My goal this year is to add interest in terms of cut and color. I intend to shop the sales after Christmas and hope to find one or two additional blazers.

2. I live in the south. I don't really need a coat so I have this covered with the four coats I do have (pea coat, assorted jackets). None are magnificent. I think for this piece I would love a standout jacket that screams funky casual. I rarely shop for jackets/coats though. They are just not on my radar.

3. I don't have a LBD either. I tend to wear slacks and blazers to all social events. Yes. I do want to liven up that category of my life as well. To accomplish this, I have started adding dressy slacks in a variety of fabrics, colors, and silhouettes to my wardrobe. I feel quite happy with the selections I made during the summer, but have not really liked the shorter lengths for fall/winter because I am challenged in how to pair them with shoes. (I absolutely love your top in number 3. You look breathtaking.)

4. I don't have the perfect pair of jeans either. I have two pair that fit ok. They are a bit baggy and are never my go-to piece for anything other than weekends. I have a really hard time finding jeans that fit well and in the summer they are suffocatingly hot.

5. I don't have the perfect purse either!!! OMG. Now I really am depressed. I DO HAVE a lot of purses. This is something I love and I change my purse weekly to accommodate my moods. This seems to satisfy me very much so I am ok here.

I continue to shop.

Sigh.
I have only a few of these things.
1. I am on the hunt for the perfect knit blazer that feels comfy like a cardigan but has some structure. If there ever happens to be a ponte knit steampunk blazer, I'll be in business!
2. I do have a gorgeous red peacoat wrapped up under the Christmas tree, so maybe that counts?
3. I do have a LBD. Sheath that can be dressed up or down, with a tiny touch of leather trim at the neck. It can't count as marvelous, because it doesn't fit perfectly, but it is close.
4. Not even. Only own two pairs of jeans, and they both are too big. Shopping for jeans sucks the life out of me.
5. Nowhere close on this one, either. But I'm more of a shoe girl, so it doesn't really bother me.

Great idea, Krish! And wonderful illustrations. Look at you!! You are shining in your wonderful pieces. Such great outfits.

Like Mary, I have to confess that my "magnificent five" list is still woefully incomplete. However, what I have:

1. The blazer. My "it" jacket this season is a $29 wonder from H&M, a cropped fuchsia knit with zipper pockets. I love its cropped length, its ease of wearing, and they way it brightens up everything else I wear.

2. I do own a trench (thank you BJ!!) and another lower quality one, too (which is good in its own way). But for my climate, I need a wool coat. This season my "it" coat is my colour blocked pea coat from Vince Camuto. It is great to wear over pants, and a coat to wear with pants is something that was previously lacking in my wardrobe. I also love my red knee-length coat from Hllary Radley. In our climate, I believe a small coat capsule is a good investment!

3. I have a LBD very much like the one pictured in the link. I wear it constantly....all seasons....it is one of the few truly cross seasonal pieces I own. I need to look into replacing it soon because it is starting to show its age.

4. Jeans. I have two pair that I really like....one DL1961 premium denim, a bit high-waisted...these are legging jeans, great for tucking into boots and very dark wash. My other pair are also legging jeans...reversible Bleulabs. I would still like a perfect slim straight pair.

5. I do not have the perfect bag, or even an interesting bag. Bags are a BIG wardrobe hole for me. I need to fix this.

Krish, I love that blazer. LOVE!! I also want those pants in the last pic. They look amazing.

1. Blazer. I bought the deep purple leather but have only worn it a few times. Not sure why. I haven't identified my go to blazer yet.

2. Trench. I have been wearing my cobalt mid-thigh fall jacket almost every day. I like the black button detail and the fit. It may be too cold soon, but I will wear it as long as I can.

3. LBD. When searching for a dress I noticed that when I weigh more, I buy black and when I am slimmer, I usually buy color. I picked up a nice black knit dress and wore it to a party last night. I also plan to wear it for NYE. I think this one could be a lasting fall back piece.

4.Jeans. I have been wearing my purple skinny Diana Kuts a lot but also a bootcut pair I picked up at Winners a month or two ago. I am liking having two go to pairs in different cuts.

5. I bought a Matt & Nat bucket shaped bag with lacing and chain on the strap and have been using it every day. I love it and think it will stick around all winter.

Great thread. It made me think about what I wear most.

Love the question and Ines's book. Having trouble matching a warm "autumn" palette with typical must-have lists, which seem to favour "winters", but here it goes:

1. Navy Olsen blazer with fabric front and an added bonus of a knit sweater back. Couldn't believe how lucky I was to find this!
2. Low sheen olive Kenneth Cole trench with studs and gunmetal grey metal buttons. Edgy and not uptight and looks fine with anything but the most formal wear.
3. Black sleeveless lined LBD with split neck. Needs accessories to add colour and make it more wearable for me. Looking for an olive green one in the same good quality as the black one.
4. Still looking for a good boot-cut style in petite or short so I don't lose the line when the bottom is hemmed. Have found better luck with skinnies, straight leg and boyfriend (rolled up).
5. Ordered a bag from an Etsy site after seeing it on a blog. It's made of seatbelts (adds a nice sheen) and I had it custom-made in rust. It's fabulous, a classic shape with an adjustable strap, and it's bullet-proof.

Krys, I have seen those seat belt bags and they are gorgeous. My only complaint about them personally is that they are quite heavy. Otherwise I would have bought one; love the look.

Blazer - as evidenced by my recent jacket week, these are a mainstay of my wardrobe this year! Many colors, all somewhat shrunken, not boxy.

Trench - I have a navy rain one and a red heavy cotton one. I agree they are very versatile but if I only had one coat it would have to be wool given my climate.

LBD - I have several in different degrees of dressiness. Needs fun accessories to punch it up, in my opinion though. I don't want to look businessy so I need either funky (for casual looks) or glitzy (for dressy looks) accessories with it. A patterned dress is more effortless for me because of this.

Jeans - I like a variety and have a bunch of colors and styles! I'd say at a minimum I'd need black straight legs, light wash skinnies. I'm kind of bored of very dark blue denim right now.

Bag - I'm not sure I have a bag I can't live without. I have a bunch but for me practicality wins (so, big, zipped, shoulderable). I don't always remember to change my bag to go with my outfit, for example. So long as it does not clash I am ok.

I personally would replace bag with boots! One mid calf, one tall pair at least are essential for me.

1. The Blazer: I have a million of 'em and wear one almost every day! probably wear my navy ponte knit blazer from the Gap more than any of them, but my heart belongs to my Kate Spade black-and-white with the ribbon belt!

2. The trench: It's warm here and not much call for a trench. But I do love the pink one that April was kind enough to pass on to me for Valentine's Day 2010!

3. LBD: I have a couple but the Perfect One has eluded me thus far. I prefer colors and patterns for my dresses, partly because I am not in love with black next to my face.

4. Jeans: Yes, please! I only get to wear them on weekends and evenings, but I love them! If I had to pick one pair it'd be my skinnies, but I love them all!

5. Bag: YLF has turned me into a Bag Lady! None of them is super-expensive but I will admit to a little price and quality creep over the years. I think my current fave is my black/ivory/brown colorblock tote from Vince Camuto via the Rack.

And yes, Diana! I'd replace LBD or Trench with BOOTS!!!

This is a fun thread. My Magnificent Five currently look like this:

The Blazer: Currently my perfect blazer is actually a designer boiled wool/quilted/textured jacket in charcoal/cognac that seems to magically go with everything I own. It is also as comfortable as a sweater and is easy to layer. It was fairly pricey, but it's worth its weight in gold.

The Trench: My contender for this category is also one of my more costly purchases. It is a Schneider (Austrian) raincoat in a lustrous, olive-bronze shade made of some waterproof, space-agey material that drapes beautifully, is breathable, and fits perfectly.

The LBD: Not my style. My equivalent is a micro-capsule consisting of a short-sleeve lace top, a silk shirt with an interesting draped neck detail, a midi-length, silk skirt with an asymmetrical hemline, and a pair of silk skinny trousers--all in black or ink blue. With this capsule, and a few accessories, I can get dressed for almost any situation. Again, each item in this capsule was fairly expensive, but I love the fabric and shape of every one of these pieces so they are real workhorses for me.

The Jean: This is an odd one for me because jeans are almost a uniform for me when I'm not in work clothes. I don't own a pair of designer denim, although my husband swears by his CofH jeans. Since I usually don't have much trouble finding jeans that fit, I wear mass market ones. I own several pairs in different washes and cuts that get laundered in the regular wash and tossed when they get too faded or stretched out.

The Bag: I'm afraid that most of the designer bags that I see don't interest me in the slightest. I've found, too, that if I can't sling it over my shoulder, the bag will just sit in the closet. My most loved bags are a couple of vintage Coach saddle-style bags (dark green and cognac) that I bought in the early 80s and still use. I also like my black Longchamps messenger-style bag and my Le Pliages. An orange, convertible tote from Matt and Nat that I bought a year ago is also in steady rotation.

Cheap bags are a pet peeve of mine ever since I had the clasp on one malfunction while I was away from home. I spent a whole day trying to make sure that nothing dropped out and swore that I'd never go through that experience again. I'd rather have one quality bag than a dozen inexpensive ones.

This made me chuckle. Because if you asked me this question half a year ago, I'd be giving you very different examples of success or failure in each category! My current Five have had to be bump-friendly, but for the bag. So...

1. The blazer...is a no-go. I'm running too warm and I need something less structured to fit my new expanded rib cage, never mind the belly (no question of buttoning over it!). So it's actually a soft knit jacket with no buttons that I got this summer, as a lightweight topper for the air-conditioned indoors, which I'm taking into winter despite its summery print. Call me... seasonally subversive!

2. The trench... is an oldie. About 5 years old, I think, in a chartreuse-y shade of not-quite-mustard. Not worn much yet, as it's just not cold enough per my new thermostat. But still my best bet and I'm still lovin' it. It's an unbelted empire-line, from my pre-belting days---which is perfect just now because I look ridiculous trying to belt with the bump.

3. The LBD... is the one big gap. I haven't seen a bump-friendly one I like in my budget. I'll live sans one this season, I think, though.

4. The jeans... have just been bought yesterday! Boyfriends, to my surprise, because I was so NOT looking for that. However, they are the only maternity jeans I could find that were not 'pull-ups', which I've come to hate---either they're too snug and clingy, or they don't stay up and need constant tugging. Ugh! Now the boyfriends... I fully intend to live in for the next six months, however frumpily it may be.

5. The bag... is actually, a la Ines, a straw tote, and you bet there's no brand on it! Yes, I'm carrying it over into winter. Hey, in the tropics, it still makes sense I figure. In fact, the straw is only coming in off the northern fields and in the southern parts of India, will only be harvested in January or even February. And winter's when mats get woven---out of date and other palm leaves, assorted grasses, water hyacinth. Humid summers and monsoons aren't kind to straw and other basketry. So a straw bag is perfectly seasonal, for us! (right??)

LOVE this...going to go back and read everyone else's responses for inspiration. Meanwhile, here are mine:

1. The Blazer - for me this means a leather jacket. I love the way a leather jacket works with my classic/retro/glam style.

2. The Trench - I have a burberry black rain trench which gets an insane amount of wear. But I also wear my fab and stylish double-breasted puffer.

3. The LBD - for me, this is a drapey wrap-like dress by 3.1 Philip Lim, or my ponte, pleat-front Theory dress in black. But dresses are not getting as much love this season from me...

4. Denim - I have been stuggling in this category this season. I have a pair of dark wash skinnies with contrast stitching that are my basic pair, but I am dreaming of fitting into a pair of dark J Brand flares that Annagybe passed on to me - they feel more "me" right now. Reality is that I've been dressing softer on the bottom - ponte pants in black and olive, and fine-wale cords in red and grey.

5. Bags - I have this one covered! I have a nice basic LV bag (popincourt haute), and a gorgeous but heavy Chloe bag in oxblood...and a Kate Spade large day clutch in cream, a lovely Furla slouchy black pebble-leather and suede shoulder bag...and my Brahmin navy satchel which looks fab with denim!

Mary, I recommend you try a pair of jeans from a higher end store, like I did. My new jeans surpass all the other ones that happily went to storage before possibly being consigned or donated.

Atlantia, the blazer I have here is like what you describe, and I got it for cheap! Keep looking. I'm sure you will find it.

Suz, that is so interesting about your LBD. I always thought that a LBD was a false "need", but maybe it is a real basic piece, if you are able to make it work cross-seasonally in our climate!

Dianthus, both items you like from my pics were bought at Winners! And what you say about your new LBD confirms that it may be more of an essential piece than I thought.

Krys, your trench sounds wonderful!

Diana I love your wardrobe. I want it!!! And good idea about the boots. They certainly are essential up here where I am.

Manidipam, how fun it will be to compare your maternity 5's to your non maternity 5's in a year from now. I remember the pull-ups... so fed-up with them too by months 8-9! Good for you to have found a BF pair that fits. Please post pics!

Jenava, this is very interesting. I was wondering if I should consider corduroy like "essential" denim. I envy your bag collection. It must make it so easy to put an outfit together with such fab choices!

Let's see...

1) blazer... I have 3 blazers I like but I haven't worn them much. I'm home most of the time and I don't grab a blazer to wear at home. But I wouldn't want to be without any of them: Gap black, Gap herringbone, and H&M knit navy.

2) trench: I have a black one from Banana Republic that I love. I would like another in a color someday... we'll see.

3) LBD: I have a Landsend knit black sheath which serves as my LBD. I would like a woven with a bit of stretch at some point but for now the knit is serving me well. I wear it pretty often. It's not super fitted but the tiny bit of looseness is nice in summer, and I often put a cardigan and a belt over it in the winter.

4) jeans: I'm thankful that Gap Perfect Boot jeans fit me so well so I'm not compelled to go for premium denim for boot cut. I don't have a favorite skinny or straight brand but my Old Navy skinnies will do for now. I hope to upgrade sometime in the next year.

5) bag: I have a small collection of bags. None are designer, unless Fossil counts, and I'm ok with that. I've considered adding a dress clutch to the group but I haven't found the right one. I'm not certain it's worth it since it might get used 1-2 times a year. I have a basic black bag I usually grab for dressy/somber occasions.

My LBD is a jersey knit...a really nice heavy jersey with a bit of texture to it, also smooth and cool to the touch..I don't know what the exact weave would be called. It has rather low cut armholes (a slight flaw in some ways...but a benefit in others). It has a jewel neckline. I wear it layered over Ts or button downs in winter, and on its own in summer.

I would never have thought this item would be necessary to me. A friend donated this dress to me when she wasn't wearing it. And I had just lost weight, so needed SOMEthing to wear. Turns out it has been hugely useful to me, quite surprisingly so. It also travels very well.

Krish, this is a fascinating topic, and you look fabulous in your magnificent five. Here are mine ,at least at the moment.
1. Blazer: mine is not a blazer but a leather Moto jacket. I feel wonderful every time I wear it.
2. Trench: I've not yet found the perfect trench that I had before I lost weight, but the Soia & Kyo I thrifted is the trench of moment. The wide collar adds inches to my top and the flared skirt to the bottom so that it helps me feel hour-glassy.
For winter my AK puffer coat is the star.
3. LBD: I have a CK version that fits well and seems to work out for most occasions. Like Suz's, it transcends seasons. Someday I hope to find a wonderful designer version .
4. Jeans: it's a tossup between dark wash COH Elston's and the slightly faded Hudsons that San sent me. The COHs feel dressier but the Hudsons look more stylish and sexy.
5. Bag: My bag of the moment is a really old black real snakeskin clutch that escaped closet purges for about 40 years. I wish it were a bit bigger but it holds the essentials.

Ok here is is my list:

Blazer:
I wear jackets often both for work and casual so I have a few that I really love wearing.

Trench:
I bought a new one a few months back (#1) and I love it. Works for every occasion.

LBD:
A staple in my wardrobe. I have both summer and winter but would like to update to ONE really fab LBD.

Jeans:
I love the blue denim straight legs. I always feel great when I wear them.

Bag:
Im a bag lady! I have quite a few and love that I feel I have the right bag for each and every outfit. At the moment my snow leopard handbag is in high rotation.

Interesting that footwear doesn't rate a mention?

Deb, you are right. It was mentioned higher up in the discussion that boots should be in there. It's supposed to be Parisian chic, of all types, you would think footwear would come in there as one typically walks so much in that city.
You say you have blazers, but which is THE one? And I think you are converting me to the idea of a LBD.

Hmmm Krish at the moment it's hard to pick one jacket, particularly as I bought a couple of fab new ones recently, but if I was going away somewhere and could only take one, it might be my new slouchy black jacket in this picture. I think it can dress up or down and I can add color via accessories. I think It will work well worn over almost everything:).

The beauty of the LBD is that it can be such a great go to piece.

Fun question Krish! And you look fantastic in all your picks. I actually was going to post a very similar question asking everyone what their closet MVPs are in each category, so you beat me to the punch! (Although I may go ahead and ask it anyways because I want to see what everyone's longer list is...). My list is essentially the same as my pre-pregnancy list would be, aside from the maternity jeans.

Anyways, here are my magnificient five to answer your question!
1. Blazer
I don't wear blazers much so my "blazer" is actually my Tahari black leather jacket that I wear in lieu of a blazer.
2. Trench
Kate Spade Melissa black ruffle trench. I know ruffles aren't really "classic" but they're very me and I don't think I'll get tired of them anytime soon. This black trench goes with everything!
3. Little black dress
Well, since none of my other ones fit right now, I'll go with the stretchy black lace one! Anthro Bailey 44 Lolabelle tiered black lace dress
4. Perfect jeans
Mavi burgundy skinny cords from Pea in the Pod. I could live in these jeans--I am loving burgundy this fall!
5. Bag
For fun factor and for this season, I'd pick the Urban Expression patent burgundy clutch I just got at DSW. But clutches don't really hold anything, so for practical everyday use I'd have to go with my fave Fossil floral satchel.

I adore lists.

My take on the top 5.

1. Blazer
I am team blazer and I have and sport many of these often. My current favorite is grey tweed for the cooler months.

2. Trench
I have a black one but don't wear it often. In cool days I tend to wear my blazers as my outerwear. And cold days I go right for wool coats.

3. LBD
I only recently purchased one for a wedding after not owning one for years. I am not a big dress person so this is not an essential to me.

4. Perfect Jeans
These are essential for me. And I adore both my bootcuts and straight let jeans. I cannot pick one favorite jean but I have one favorite for each style (bootcut-Joe's, straight leg-Lucky Brand).

5. Bag
I change my bag every season. I don't have my "one" bag yet.

Fun question indeed, and I love your choices, Krish! What a beautiful lace top you have. What would my top five be?

1. Blazer:
I have two that I love, the grey tweed blazer, and my new fun green blazer. #1

2. Trench:
This one is easy - my red wool coat, of course! #5

3. LBD:
Again very easy - my LRD it is. #2

4. Perfect jeans:
Don't have that. I'm on the lookout for a pair of really dark blue straight legged jeans. A pair of black skinnies would be great, too.

5: Bag:
If I have to pick just one, I would say that my brown messenger bag is the most timeless and versatile bag I own. It is great. But for the fun of it, I pick my fuchsia clutch instead, it acts as a stand in until I find THE clutch. #3

(If I could add something instead of jeans and bag, I would choose the navy V-neck and the Breton top. These pieces are favorites/essentials/staples, and almost worn to death already. I would also add my brown leather booties - #3-4.)

Goldenpig, these are great pieces! I especially love your trench, I agree, it is completely you. You look so pretty in each outfit too. Your clutch looks so cool.
Do post your question, it's a great idea. I'm intrigued as well.

Lisa, I certainly understand that you feel you don't need a trench. I lived for years without one, when everyone was saying how essential it was... Then like you, I had a black one but never wore it. Last Spring I finally got one that I like and I found I relied on it a lot throughout Spring-Summer, which explains why I don't wear the black one, black being a colour I wear a lot in the Fall and Winter (by Spring I crave colours). Could it be your case?

Ingunn!!! OMG let me faint and faint again at each of your wonderful outfits. I want it all! Pattern mixing in one is to die for (and to dye for... I mean, look at your fab fab red hair against that green). You have a definite style going, and it is so appealing, with its crisp lines, its bursts of colour, and its movement. May I ask what brand is your Breton? It is so elegant.

It is highly recommendable - the thick cotton jersey is very easy to layer and it keeps its shape wash after wash. I only wish I'd bought two, because they don't ship to Norway.

It's funny that my hair reads as red on your screens, I would say I'm more of a brunette than a redhead. I guess it is the warm cast. Being a redhead is lovely, too, so I don't mind that at all!

Fun! Krish, I love your pieces. Especially the lace top, which is weird, because normally I'm not a fan of lace.

Mine:
1. Blazer: heather gray petite wool suiting blazer from J. Crew. Goes great with black tee shirt and dark indigo jeans.

2. Trench: no, sorry, no trench. Anything that belts at the waist looks bad on me. I suppose I could get one tie the belt round the back, but so far I've been using a black knee-length coat with toggle closures and interesting lining. It's slightly shaped at the waist, and goes with everything.

3. Little Black Dress: You know, I never have an occasion to wear these. I lead a relatively casual lifestyle. I always end up wearing a pencil skirt and sleek top instead, or else skinny pants with high heels. 4. Perfect jeans: Mavi skinny jeans in very dark indigo. They're made of a heavy, non-stretchy denim and almost look like straight legs. Hands-down my most versatile jeans.

Ingunn, with the light, on my screen, your hair looks like it has lovely copper reflections in it. Anyway, it comes out really nicely against the green and the red. These colours are yours!

Elisabeth, I can't believe you don't have a trench! But I totally get you on the belt issue. I never know what to do with it. Tied at the waist, even knotted, I feel girlish. Tied in the back, I'm always wondering if the belt is still there. And all these fussy buttons and button holes! Vive the toggle closures.

Your comment about the LBD makes me think of an issue I have with them: the tummy. I'm always so conscious if it in a form fitting one-piece dress, that's why I veer towards skirts or pants for events. Is it what bothers you too?
