Wedding outfit, really?!?!

So Denise's (Cocolion) mentioned this minimalist focused blog, un-fancy.
I checked it out and was fine with it until I hit this outfit.

She said she would wear it to "city-chic wedding" and other nicer events. Really?!?!
I mean I'd wear it to dinner out in the summer in Seattle but not to a wedding. I think this is a case of thinking a minimal wardrobe can work in EVERY situation. Or maybe this just confirms that I'm an OLDZ.

Agree with you 100%. There have to be exceptions to every rule, including a 37 pc wardrobe, and that is ok!

I do agree. Evening clothes or wedding clothes don't tend to dat either so you could wear your one piece for years.

I enjoy her blog and sense of style but do think that part of the reason is works so well is because she is young and gorgeous!

I think it's the pants. In my mind there are weddings you can wear slouchy pants and sleeveless tops to (unconventional, very casual), in which case heels are kind of not necessary either so much but fun. But 'city-chic' wedding still sounds like a skirt or quite dressy pants outfit to me.

As an outfit on it's own though I like it.

Ditto - I've never been to a wedding that casual. I spent an enjoyable hour or so flipping through Un-Fancy on the weekend and don't recall seeing any outfits dressier than smart casual, true to the name.

Oy. One should never wear drawstring pants to a wedding!

ETA: And also? If one owns those shoes (which are admittedly awesome, even though they are too high for me), one clearly likes fashion and definitely own a nice skirt or dress that would be more appropriate. Just saying.

I like her blog and her simple fresh outfits. I agree the linked outfit would not fly for a wedding here....the maxi dress from her capsule would be my choice.

I agree that sometimes you need that certain outfit for special occasions and not everything in the closet can be used endlessly in all situations merely by accessorizing differently or whatnot.
I also perused the site quickly after re-posting on Cocolion's thread today. And I noticed something that I find fault with, as far as 'minimalism' goes. She talks of 37 items per season - which equates to a moderate 148 for the year. Also buying 4 to 8 new pieces each season, or up to 32 items each year. That's basically what I am doing, and I don't consider myself minimal at all. Moderate, yes.
I like the clothes, and I like the idea of making do with less but I balk a bit at calling such buying patterns minimal.

Anna, I'd wear that look on a casual client day with a jacket. Or out to dinner for sure. As for a wedding, I'd dress more formally. Although weddings these days can be extremely casual, which does not make this outfit inappropriate. When I help prep some of my own clients for casual Summer weddings, some are wearing relaxed cotton dresses with flat sandals. I had to get use to this level of casualness for weddings. Times are certainly changing.

Mo--good point. I hadn't noticed she purchased four to eight items per seson. In my world, that's a lot. And 148 pieces a year? No, that's not quite minimal, is it. These sorts of things make me want to run upstairs and count everything over again--just to be sure my walls haven't turned to glass.

I would never wear this to any wedding, but I am fancy (well, sometimes). However, there have been several posts lately about weddings with casual dress codes and I could see this working in that context. I also think it's good to keep in mind that the topic if the post is the outfit itself, not wedding wear. She's just listing several possible places she mught wear the outfit. I imagine if she posted a look for a wedding specifically she'd pick something like the cute dress in the sidebar.

Regarding her overall approach, she's only been blogging for a few months so lets cut her a little slack. Ok, must go buy some things (soooo not a minamalist here).

What Diana said. There's minimalism, and there are the choices you make as to what you keep in your minimalist closet--such as a little navy dress and nude pumps and then add faux pearls for summer city chic wedding.
Also I never know if the "per season" is based on the SS/FW, 2-season fashion year, which is the common reference for the "French wardrobe" --if so that could be as few 8 items per year, which is minimal for me (currently--I should aspire to that!).

With you 1000%. It's a nice blog, and her outfits are lovely and *casual*. But yes, she is young. I don't care if someone invites me to a wedding in jeans (it's been done), I'm dressing up more than that. It looks like an outfit I'd wear for a hot summer day to meet a client or go to casual dinner with hubs. Call me traditional.

She IS in Austin, Texas so maybe she could wear this to a wedding without much criticism. It really is that casual for many people in the area - esp. the younger 20-30 set. My last wedding was formal in Houston but the one before was on a nearby ranch outdoors in late May and the bride wore black jeans and rode in on a Harley. Needless to say the outfits of the guests were interesting.

I hear you loud and clear. It's a gorgeous outfit, but I can't imagine wearing it to a wedding. As others have said, dinner out or other social get-togethers, yes. Although I suppose if the setting were really casual...I was at a wedding in someone's backyard where everyone but me was in jeans and shorts. I was wearing a skirt (the invitation said casual) and felt out of place.

There is no way I could wear that to a wedding. I couldn't even get away with slacks. It would have to be a dressy dress. I know because I spent hundreds of hours shopping for outfits last year for multiple weddings. I could wear some of the stuff repeatedly (makeup, shoes), but the dress was different for each wedding.

I love this outfit and no way in heck would I wear it to a wedding. I'd expect the old biddies to be ripping her to shreds and I'd go sit next to 'em. A wedding is not a joke. The bride and groom need to feel the heavy weight of the community looking down on them with the grim eye, knowing they'll be held to their promises - no their vows - no matter what they feel like in the future.

I guess you would need to know your couple. I personally would be offended if the wait staff at my wedding showed up in this.

Well, that would never fly for wedding guest attire in my world, but then again I still believe in the apparently antiquated notion that people should not wear white to a wedding, either, so what do I know? I do know that standards of dress are becoming more casual for EVERY occasion, so perhaps I am just behind the times.

I also think it speaks to what is expected of older ladies vs. younger. If a young lady wears something not quite, um, dressy enough but not tacky--meaning, pretty and put-together, but more casual than I would wear--we just automatically make allowances, and of course the person is dewy and fab-looking in a beach towel anyway.Whereas, the older set is expected to have all these wardrobe bases covered, in style and quality. So to me it's more, I'd say one thing if someone were actually asking my advice (should I wear this, or that?) but I'd probably not be very amazed or unsettled seeing these various outfits on young people at the events.

I'm hoping that she meant to wear it to a wedding as a professional wedding photographer? Not formal enough for a guest, but I think if you were working summer wedding season in Austin TX this might be acceptable for clients who were more urban in taste. I can't even remember what my wedding photographer wore, so clearly whatever it is should blend into the crowd. The outfit I do remember was a plunging shiny gold top and micro mini to an outdoor afternoon wedding. Oh boy!

I don't think I'm that much older than her and I would never wear that to a wedding. Even if it was outdoors on a beach. Or a picnic breakfast wedding. GAH.
