I’m two months in to my personal Wear Everything Twice challenge, and I’m feeling pretty good. Basically, everything that doesn't get worn twice between August 1 and December 31 (except for gear and really fancy clothes) is going bye bye. I've also decided that anything new I buy before December 1 has to follow the same rules.

I’ve been able to wear more pants and jackets/blazers than I expected to by now because if I go back on campus to work in my office at night I throw on some warmer clothes to combat the frigid AC. The vast majority of unworn items are just too warm for me to wear until it cools off in AZ, or are colors I just don’t wear much anymore (specifically black and gray).

I realized several weeks ago that I was wearing several of my items more than twice while similar ones were going unworn. This was especially true with short sleeved shirts. So I bought some more underwear and have now gone 4 weeks without doing laundry! This has forced me to wear more of my shirts, since I wash my shirts after every wear. And don’t worry, I’ll be doing all of my laundry this weekend.

This process has also forced me to come to terms with which items just aren’t worth keeping, so the total number of clothes below is smaller than the number I started with. I figured rather than waiting until the end to purge all the clothes that don’t get worn twice, it made sense to edit as I go so that I can focus on the clothes I want to keep!

Anyway, here’s my tally:

Camisoles: 4 worn once, 3 unworn
Tank tops: 3 good, 10 worn once
Short sleeved shirts: 6 good, 8 worn once, 2 unworn
Long sleeved shirts: 1 worn once, 10 unworn
Woven shirts: 1 good, 1 worn once
Jackets /blazers: 4 good, 2 worn once, 2 unworn
Cardigans: 8 good, 1 worn once, 2 unworn
Sweaters: 5 unworn
Hoodies: 1 good, 2 worn once
Dresses: 4 good, 8 worn once, 4 unworn
Skirts: 5 good, 7 worn once
Pants: 4 unworn
Jeans: 4 good, 3 unworn
Bermudas/walk shorts: 3 good
Shorts: 1 good
Leggings: 1 good, 3 unworn
Tights: 5 unworn
Scarves: 9 unworn
Belts: 3 good, 2 worn once, 6 unworn
Shoes (excluding gear): 5 good, 2 worn once, 3 unworn

Total good (worn twice): 49
Total worn once: 51
Total unworn: 61

I’ll be doing this until 2011, so I’m definitely on track to wear everything enough so that I could potentially keep all of the clothes I currently have. Especially as it gets colder and I can layer, I should be able to plow through my currently unworn long sleeved shirts, scarves, jackets, and pants.

These are the lessons I have learned so far: 1) if I really don’t want to wear something it’s not going to get worn and I need to get rid of it, 2) I play favorites, 3) I haven’t worn everything I thought I should keep because they fill gaps, so a lot of them probably aren’t crucial after all, 4) I have enough clothes that if the weather allowed for it I could go two months without doing laundry, and 5) I shouldn’t buy colorful skirts; I wear the neutral ones much more often.
