It also depends on how long your torso is...how much room there is for a belt. Experiment also on wearing a belt of different widths at your natual waist and below, or even slung over your hip. It changes the look of your proportions.
I personally like wearing thicker belts at my waistline and thinner belts with more volumnious tops at the hip line. I've found that it elongates the torso for me.
