I don't wear turtlenecks because I hate having things around my neck. I have a long neck that goes on and on. I don't wear anything too restricting around my neck. I also think (like Janet) that it draws attention to my jaw line that is showing aging. I would prefer to emphasize something else.

My DH wears black turtlenecks all winter. Just like The Beatles and beatniks. Of course he is a 60s guy. He went to see The Beatles on their first North American tour.

I have mixed feelings, personally about turtlenecks as I absolutely love how they look on others and don't enjoy seeing myself in them so much. I run hotter some days so I save turtlenecks for very cold weather, but also my bustline is bigger due to extra weight and hormones and also my jawline isn't what it was, so I don't feel so fab. I would need a very soft and un-itchy knit too.

Dee, I have this very turtle in charcoal. I sized up to a medium. Wore it to ssif with skinny jeans. The turtle went with everything I tried on that day...

I also have the tissue tnecks from Jcrew that I wear all winter as an underwater over nearly everything.

The key this season seems to be getting it oversized.

If it's a nice knit, with some texture, in a colour you love, does it need much styling? I wear them in winter as standalone tops (under a proper winter coat, I'm Canadian). I wouldn't buy a neutral one, too plain for me, as I don't find they work well with scarves, and can be too hot and bulky with an indoor topper, working in an office anyway. In a longer fluid fit, I'd wear it over skinnies, with booties or taller boots. Several years ago I might have added a wide belt but that is not the thing right now is it? Shorter ones might get (semi) tucked in with office-y pants, probably in a menswear 'false plain' for some interest, and a belt.
I guess I see them as a winter basic so I don't necessarily look to a tneck to make me feel current, that would come from other elements (slouchy tapered pants?). But I would choose current (or favourite colours) and fit, so not bodycon, etc.

Love J Crew tissue thin turtle necks!! I own several colors and multiples of some colors. I tend to be cold a ton, so I wear them over cuddle duds and under sweaters. I wear them with skirts, cardigans, etc. I am HUGE on the way things feel - and J Crew has an awesome feel to their t-shirts and turtle necks.
