Trina Turk pants: Keep or return and styling help

Hello fashionistas! I haven't posted in awhile---been out of town, and also have been happily dressing in my summer uniform of woven blouses, bermudas and sandals.

But I'm starting to think ahead about the fall. I only own bootleg pants, and I would love to have pants that show more of two fabulous pair of shoes , purple Frye oxfords, and Boutique 9 boots.

I also just purchased a pair of Trina Turk black pants on clearance at the Rack. They were a deal, but I don't want to keep them unless they are a 10. They are black, hard to photograph, but are rayon, drapey, and very tapered at the ankle with hidden zippers. They are also very short! Do they work?

The first 3 photos are shoes I could wear with these pants:

#1 Purple Frye Carson oxfords
#2 Grey Boutique 9 Rusty booties (Angie's store)
#3 Silver/gold Clarks sandals

Then outfits with the pants:
#4 Collective Concepts blouse (Angie's pick) with oxfords
#5 Collective Concepts blouse with black wedges (too high for me; I would rarely wear, but could on special occasions)
#6 Halogen cotton blouse, oxfords
#7-8 Blue print blouse, Cubism (too much volume on volume?) , oxfords
#9-11 White woven rayon blouse, oxfords
#12 Taupe Hinge silk jacket, Boutique 9 boots

Can these pants be worn with these shoes? What works; what doesn't? Any more suggestions on styling? Thanks in advance for all help!

I like the pants best with the shoes in 3 and don't really care for them with 1. I think the blouse in 4/5 is pretty but the tails of the bow need to be tied shorter. The blue shirt in 6 is great and I totally love the white ruffle shirt in 9/10/11.

I'm not sure about the cut of the pants. Something seems off to me but I have a tendency to resist new shapes for a while so it could just be me.

I'm just not liking the style of the pants. Maybe it's too tapered, which to me makes it look dated. Sorry.

They are very reminiscent of 80's - a little too much for me. But perhaps someone can chime in with how to rock a retro look out of them!

I would like the pants if they were 1-2 inches longer. I think the silhouette looks modern -- a more voluminous top and tapered bottoms. But it's the length that isn't working for me.

I like them a lot with the purple oxfords, if they were longer that is.

Can you let out the hem? It just needs a bit more length. Also, can you push them down a little more on your hips to give them more length?

Yeah, I was going to say that these pants are crying out for heeled black booties! Though I do like the look in 12.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I think the pants are, as Angie says, Killer! I think they are especially awesome styled with the purple oxfords. I do think, however, that the cut of the pants needs for the top to be tucked in. I love the masculine/feminine idea of wearing the pants with a floral shirt (tucked in) and a chunky belt and the oxfords. I would also try the pants with a tucked-in turtleneck or cowl-neck, for fall. Ten all the way! Rock it!
Full disclosure, when I was pregnant my sister asked what clothes I missed wearing, and the first thing that popped to mind was the pair of black vintage high-waist tapered, ankle-length pants with a very similar cut.

I'm a complete spanner !!

I LOVE the pants and adore them with the Fryes in #9 and #10. That to me, is *edgy*. Skyscraper heels, although they would look fab too, are the expected choice and fashionably mainstream. I would personally wear these trousers with the sockless oxfords. KILLER, (high five, Kate S).

Love the rest of the footwear too.

The blouse is really pretty but looks best un-tucked.

Wow, how fun to read this thread! I totally see the 80's vibe, which I didn't before.....and I can see how one could either hate or love these pants....

I'm going to play with them a little more. I'd love to have pants that show more of the oxfords, and I'd love to play with edge as I am (more than a little) staid right now....

My immediate response was that the pants are too short, but I still like them. I really think your shoes will make or break the look. The oxfords and wedges do it for me:). Great selection of tops.

In my (perhaps closed-minded) opinion, those pants need heels...whether pumps or booties.

I can totally see how this is a cutting-edge fashion look, and (I mean no disrespect) it made me immediately think of the Man Repeller fashion blog. At least in my world, if I paired those pants with purple oxfords I would hear endless comments from my befuddled husband about my grandpa shoes, my highwater pants, etc.

But if you can rock it and you don't care that not everyone gets it, rock on with your bad self!

Denise, Just checked, and the hem cannot be let out as the zippers prevent that....And they won't slide any lower on my hips.....I would like just a little more length too.

Alicat, LOL Man Repeller!!!!! Never heard of the blog, and it was SO FUN to read! And yes, she just featured pleated high waisted pants!

I feel I should add that I really like the pants :), and I like the idea of them with flat shoes or boots, but somehow I just don't care for the Fryes with them (along with the white ruffled shirt). The Fryes seem too casual to my eye, and to me the white blouse doesn't "match" the pants in terms of modernness, if that makes any sense. That's why the 12th look jumped out at me: the jacket seems to "go with" the pants and the boots. And I still think black booties would be fab, even though, as Angie points out (and I agree), that would be a more conventional pairing.

At any rate, have lots of fun playing with these pants and enjoy!

Thanks for chiming back in, Jonesy :). I also think that high heels would look fabulous with these trousers! But I like the unexpected edge of flats!!! I wear my low rise crazy jodhpur jeans with flats all the time. To my eye, it works well.

Isis, are these silky pants? The shine in the photo in #12 can be misleading.

The pants are definitely not too short - see picture #10. We have length.

Jonesy, Here are black boots I own. Ariat Spats. They are about 10 yrs old, I've worn them to death and now I see they've faded. It may be time to get some new ones! I'll also pair them with less frilly shirts in the pics below.

Angie, The pants are not silk, but are quite drapey and somewhat shiney. The tag says 83% rayon/15% visose/2% elasthane. They are incredibly well constructed.

Do you like the more tailored shirts better than the frilly one? Because of color, only the grey striped shirt could pair with the purple oxfords.

#1 close up of black booties (Ariat spats)
#2 with cotton grey striped shirt (Dockers) /black booties
#3-4 teal knit cowl shirt (Gap)
#5-6 pumpkin silk shirt (very old; I think I removed shoulder pads, too big?)
#7-8 shiny silk shirt.

I like 2 and 3 in this batch. I'm not completely sold on the ankle showing with the oxfords, but I do love those purple oxfords. I have a similar pair of pants and now I know what I can try.
