Today's Outfit (and New Hair!)

Class this morning, work this afternoon. It's a lovely day in New Orleans, and everyone is ridiculously happy as the Saints won last night and are going to the Super Bowl I used a "curl remover" (mild relaxer) on my previously tightly curled hair last Friday. It's loose waves now, which I love. The product was One N'Only, and I'd definitely recommend it. It smells terrible during the process, but it's inexpensive (under $10) and left my hair soft, undamaged, and frizz-free. I'm going to get it cut tomorrow, probably with some face-framing layers/bangs, but not getting rid of much length. Any hair cut ideas?

Forever21 tee (2.80!), Forever21 skirt (8.80!), Victoria's Secret leggings, Target booties, vintage seventies owl necklace. I've been hesitant to wear skirts with this slightly tulip shape in fear of making my hips appear larger. I couldn't resist the purple brocade fabric of this skirt though! This is coming from someone who never had curly hair (except for a brief period in late 90s) so you are welcome to ignore my opinion. I have been watching your threads for some time now and I realized that you really have gorgeous, curly hair. Instead of going against its nature, why don't you try working with it? There is a lot of information out there on how to manage curly hair. Recently, one of my favorite bloggers, S. from academichic, decided to go no-shampoo route and has been writing about hair journey.

The reason I brought her up is that she was also always trying to straighten hair before this experiment and now she says she has the softest, well-behaving curls.

As for your outfit, I love your skirt. I am a quite "hippy" girl myself and found out that the tulip skirts actually cover it up really well instead of enhancing it.

You have beautiful hair. I think blunt bangs and a few long layers would look great.

Regarding bella's post, I agree, I have curly/wavy hair and have cut down to shampooing about once a week or less. On the other days I just use conditioner. My hair's still a work in progress, but cutting down on shampoo has helped! I deal with much less frizz and it seems healthier and shinier. So if you haven't tried that, it might be worth a shot.

I tend to agree with Bella, just because I have had many friends with curly hair who have fought their curls so hard... doing all kinds of things and spending all kinds of money on it... just to end up with super damaged hair that they struggle with all the time and that still never looks the way they want it to. Again, this is just secondhand experience talking, because I also have straight hair.

You're so pretty, and I myself would give anything to have curly hair such as yours. My hair is curly only at a certain length, too short,not curly, too long, not curly. My hair is just not going into the curly stage and when I see my stylist I am going to ask her to TRY to keep it in the curly stage. It sounds to me like we have envy of your curly hair.
I LOVE th purple skirt and the way the necklace color stands out against your top, and the boots are adorable, especially with the leg lengthening matching hose.
I hope we see a picture of the new haircut you are getting.

I understand your desire to try straight hair. The grass is always greener on the other side.

I have tight spiral curls too, and had mine professionally relaxed a few years ago. I did it one time. It was fun to try something new at first, but I got tired of not having my volume. It actually was like what people with slight waves have complained about to me ... "I wish my hair was as curly as yours because mine is just half curly, and doesn't go either curly or straight." So I grew it out (ugh ... looked like a reverse perm) and cut it to my chin finally. I'm glad to have my curls back. I wash it once a week with conditioner, don't use SLS or dimethicone products, and my hair is softer, less frizzy, less flyaway, better curls. I'm happy with my hair now.

But it is fun to try something new and try it straight. I agree. But when you want your curls again, try reading this forum for inspiration and techniques: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/

That skirt is an amazing colour AlexSue! And I think it looks beautiful on you, not hippy at all! Lovely outfit again.

I'm hopeless with hairstyle suggestions, but you've already received some great advice here. Do post pictures after your hair appointment?-)

Thanks for the compliments and suggestions everyone! It seems that we have a lot of curly hair fans here, haha. My curls were very tight and became very frizzy easily (especially in Louisiana's humidity). I liked them, but I think that the waves will be easier to manage (my curly hair required tons of product and time). I'll definitely post a picture after my appointment

I do love tulip skirts, they are so sweet and I think that they are quite sexy too.

As someone with curly hair, I totally know where you are coming from - also living in New Orleans I understand it is humid and that must make curly hair extra hard to deal with.

I’m putting a spanner in the works here. I don’t necessarily think it’s a done deal to work with the curls that you have when you have curly hair – often it’s actually more work. Also, you have to have the right type of curls for them to look fab, AND you need to look great with curly hair, which is also not a slam dunk. Obviously, I agree that fighting with your hair is not ideal – but often, fighting with curls to make them curly is just as bad. I hope that makes sense.

Keep it long and add lots of layers, which you be able to scrunch or will be easy to use a flat iron on for straight look, if you want. I think you can do lots with a head of hair like you got.

Angie- I definitely understand what you mean. I think that curls look fantastic on some people, but it seems for my generation that wavy/straight styles are considered more attractive (and the curls that are considered stylish are those given by a curling iron, not nature).
