Those of you with a wardrobe capsule....

I have been having fun putting together a spring wardrobe capsule all inspired by these shoes and this Redbook article,

But I'm wondering how others organize the capsule in your closet, do you store the clothes together?

It depends. Basically, anything that I could wear to school/work is just my general wardrobe. I consider the rest as capsules. I keep my fancy capsule together, my exercise capsule together, and my super casual capsule together. I can pull things from the general wardrobe to work with the fancy or super casual items, but most days when I'm getting dressed I'm headed to campus, and so I don't want to even look at the capsules because they simply won't work for what I need. So my fancy and casual closet items are stored on the far side of my closet, and the rest of my super casual things and workout wear are in a drawer without my everyday clothes.

I have sleep capsules and workout capsules together in dresser drawers, but my closet is organized by item type (which does mean that my summer dress capsule is together).

I do sort of what Kate does, by lining my clothes up from most casual to fanciest within each category (shirts, then skirts, then dresses), with casual in the middle and fancy at the outer edges. Since I wear mostly casual styles the bulk of my daily wear is front and center. But the only real capsules I keep separate are exercise wear and loungewear. Or if planning a trip, I will lay all those clothes out on a bed separate from my closet.

Similar to the above, I keep sleep, sport, super-casual, and formal capsules separate. The rest is grouped by type...although I am sure I have not identified a lot of the mixing opportunities I have.

I do pretty much what Kate, chewy and Mo do. In my closet I have all like pieces together (all pants, all cardigans, all buttondown shirts, etc.) hung from lightest to darkest colors. In the past I've kept dressy capsules together but found I could be wearing some of those pieces dressed down. Now only the most formal items are in a separate place and a dressy skirt may be paired with a turtleneck or silk wrap blouse with a jean skirt and worn to church or a restaurant dinner.

Kate, Chewey and Mo-I have things organized like you, but like Lynne, feel I will be missing opportunities to work the items into rotation if they aren't all together. I guess my closet is getting too big!

Maybe just documenting the different possiblities in pictures could help me recall the outfits I have worked out is the best way to go, and organizing like Joy, with all like items together is still the most efficient way.

Carole, what I do to keep my remixing possibilities open is go to the capsule, grab the items I want, and then look at the rest of my wardrobe. For example, I only have a couple items in my fancy capsule that absolutely cannot be dressed down to be work appropriate. So if I have a fancy occasion, I start with the fancy capsule, pick out a dress, and then go to where ALL of my cardigans and jackets are and figure out which to wear. Similarly, if I know I'll be lounging around the house all day, I'll get a really casual top out of the capsule, and then maybe pair it with jeans from my everyday wardrobe.

Again, it helps that I shop for versatile items, so the vast majority of my clothes aren't in capsules because they can work in a smart casual/business casual setting, but many can be used with capsule items.

Kate, that makes total sense.

To come up with my spring capsule, I layed everything out and played around with all the combo's. I took pictures so I could remember what I came up with, but now that it's time to put everything away, I don't want everything to get lost in the closet, if you know what I mean. Seems I have so many things I have neglected to wear, because I couldn't see them buried in with everything else. More and more I'm determined to have a fine tuned, streamlined wardrobe. Just having a hard time figuring out the best strategy for me! Thanks for your insight!

Carole, thanks for posting that Red book article link.

I don't really have capsules, per se, but I do group similar clothing together. Workout clothes and lounge/sleepwear are stashed away, but everything else that I wear is organized by color so I can SEE it and therefore wear it. I rotate seasonal clothes to different closets, but most everything is still visible.

Hi Carole,

I group like items together: shirts, jackets, skirts, dresses. Colors are more casually sorted within the like items; there's a LOT of purple in my closet!

I dont have capsules but i like many others hang by type of item. I dont hang by color i hang by most recently worn at the back, that way i know things toward the front of a section need to be worn to change things up and keep it interesting. I do keep all my logo type tees in drawers as well as all my jammies. I love the capsule concept in theory but i feel that would limit me.

Another thing that helps me is to plan outfits the night before. Planning for the week would also accomplish the same thing. I'm more motivated to take a little more time to look for pieces that haven't been worn much and figure out a way to wear them.

I never really had my clothes organized other than grouping my jeans together, dress slacks together, stacks of solid colored tees, a shelf for pjs, a shelf for workout gear. After reading this thread, I went to my closet and arranged everything else by color schemes. All my black jackets, tops, cardigans, and similarly colored tops, did the same for teal, purple and pinks, red/burgundy or coral, browns or warm tones, navy and other blues and white or cream. I still have jeans, pants, layering tees, dressier items that won't work with jeans separated. Most of my wardrobe is casual because that fits my lifestyle. The color grouping really helped me to see where I could add some things and what I had many of already.

Thanks Barbara, Joy, Cheryl and Cilleena for chimming in! I just bought new hangers and am planning to really get in there and reorganize by clothing type and color! My new hangers should help keep everything tidy...
