I find the nude flats somewhat comical. She looks barefoot. Your nude flats with the black edging would be better here.

Lisa, *of course* red heels will look amazing with the outfit! But I like the flats just as much. To Beth and Khris's point, it's a completely different look. BOTH killer looks to my eye.

I will say this... Heels make the outfit for ME, but I can see how they won't always for others.
Angie, I have tiny feet in proportion to my height (and size) and my (lower) legs aren't as lean as I'd like.
A black ballet flat is a kiss of death for any outfit of mine. Not to mention uncomfortable.
I stand firm on heels for me (and I do generally prefer them on others as well) but I won't say flats couldn't make an outfit for someone else.

The flats give it a sweet look for sure - she is a frequent appearance on Sart too, and no wonder. I am Team Both really, never even gave a thought to heels vs. flats till I came here! But like Sarah, I do not do ballet flats - on me they look like hooves.

Then your answer to my blog post question this morning Sarah is "yes". And that is perfectly fine. We all see different things! This morning's question was about AESTHETICS only. Not foot fussiness or confidence. Perhaps I was unclear about that?

(From a comfort point of view, it's true that very high arches prefer heels. I have clients who prefer heels for comfort reasons).

Black ballet flats will work better with black skinnies. Alone, I understand what you mean about hooves

I love the unexpected use of ballet flats in this outfit. Flat oxfords may have worked wonderfully well too.

The flats here make me think, "what a darling outfit" and make it so sweet. Heels, while lovely, would take away from that.

I actually think a pair of kitten heels would look darling with this outfit. Aesthetically, I think this outfit calls for retro-styled heels. Heels do not need to be sexy, they can be sweet, charming and adorable, too.

Personally, I find the black cap on the ballet flats is so distracting, and the nude part makes her look barefoot, which is a disturbing thought for a city crosswalk.

I think the flats give this a "sweet" look and IMO heels would give a more sophisticated, chic look. Both looks are equally fabulous, but I am a long time Team Heels player, so I would definitely have chosen heels with this outfit if I were wearing it.

I guess I'm seriously a team heels girl because I had to look at this several times before I decided that maybe I could see what Angie sees. I would admire seeing this lady on the street because I would feel the look was so "her" but I'd never wear it that way ever.

On the other hand, I also find flats uncomfortable and mostly feel like they make my feet look funny... and I think I tend to favor dressier looks anyway so I'm definitely biased.

I think this is an artsy fun way to this. I like it. It is unexpected and show stopping. Not knowing her or a thing about her. I still think she looks entirely comfortable with her style and who she is.

As you could expect I love this outfit. Although my legs are not what I wished they were I like to pair dresses with flats. Maybe my arch is very low but the fact is that i think I move in a more graceful way in flats than in heels.

I think a flat is amazing with this outfit but I'd prefer barefeet or black ballet shoes. Don't like the nude/black combination.

If I saw this in real life I would just think she was on her way somewhere and was changing shoes there...sad isnt' it?

It took me forever to even get to the shoes because that dress is so divinely beautiful! Most of all I like that she wears the dress and it doesn't wear her. Interestingly, I think if she wore sky high heels with it, it would look like the dress is wearing her.

I'll be honest: this outfit is beyond me. I mean that I feel I don't understand enough about why this works to have a valid opinion on it.

But I will just say that to me this outfit gives a very clear statement about the wearer (I'd go for confidence and glamour, combined with practicality and vulnerability) and that makes it a compelling image. Once you change one of the elements it would not make the same statement.

Or am I being fanciful?!

I *am* on the team who thinks that flats can make the outfit sometimes - but for me, they don't quite mesh in this outfit. I guess I see flats as inherently being more casual unless they are a *very* dressy construction, and I see a disconnect between the level of dressiness in this woman's very formal dress and her shoes. I need something to balance out the disconnect between the gorgeous dress and the nude shoes. Maybe it's because they are at opposite ends of her body. I almost feel like another casual accessory or a denim jacket or something would make this work better for me, or a different color/material in the flat shoe.
