Talking Heads were a groundbreaking band. One of my favorite bands ever.

I remember seeing that film for the first time -- it was in a historic theater, and my boyfriend at the time worked there. Everyone danced in the aisles. It was the most audience participation for a film I've ever seen, other than Rocky Horror Picture Show (there's another blast from the past for you!).

ah! I love it. David Byrne was so ahead of his time. I had an over sized ivory silk blazer in the 80s that I loved to wear (shoulder pads too)....... I had a curly perm, just had to add some texture to my baby fine blond hair bob!.....I have memories of my mom putting in the curlers in the kitchen, every once in a while stabbing my ear with the rat tail comb! and the best was my DAD's perm he was pretty funny with his big blond halo

I felt very 80s today with my zipper ankle light denim jeans. now I just need to go listen to some 180 minutes.

PS:
Angie & all other north westerners: EMPs new show: Vivid: Spectacle! is all on the Art of the music video and opens Friday, May 16th. They will have an 80's video Karaoke booth!!!! and Macklemore & his fashion-anti-fashion.....

Ooh, thanks for the tip rebekahphoto! Seattle symphony is doing the works of Danny Elfman of Oingo Boingo fame this Summer. I suspect the outfits will lean goth vs symphony!

I think I missed the 80's while busy with babies, then toddlers. I did have jackets with giant shoulder pads, including a red culotte suit and a black and white checked jump suit. DMIL had huge hair

I do remember that suit & I did love the music. I listen to it on 1st wave on Sirius radio these days.

Oh yeah!!, I remember that concert and we watch the movie often. Love the whole 80's vibe. One day I am going to have a Stop Making Sense 80s Halloween party.

Wow this thread is bring back a lot of wonderful music memories. Anyone listen to Kraftwerk??

I remember that suit! And I swear I remember his bandmate wore an Izod shirt in that movie.

Deborah, definitely listened to Kraftwerk!

I actually really enjoy how a lot of new indie bands sound a LOT like the 80s music I listened to in college (and still do now).

I start thinking down this musical track and my mind goes to:

Echo & the Bunnymen (have a new release out!)
Depeche Mode
Siouxsie & the Banshees
The The
Simple Minds
Psychedelic Furs
Talk Talk
The Cure
The Stranglers
XTC (my radio station is playing them right this moment)
etc...

I never did the perm thing, but I didn't need to. My hair quite got big on its own. Definitely did the big shoulder pads. Thanks for this walk down memory lane!

I knew what you meant before opening the post! So Fab! Fun to hear all the stories. I have curly hair from the ears back (stick straight bangs) and used to get perms to even it all up. Remember the smell? Sulfur. Ugh. The things we did for beauty.
JenA and I were talking 80's music in Boston - my faves were Housemartins, The Cure, Simple Minds, Psychadelic Furs, INXS, Yaz, Depeche Mode... Off to pull some CDs to listen to while cleaning house!

Well, I really think my era is 30s and 40s, but I do like bright colors and shoulder pads, too! And big hair? Easy peasy. I regularly thin my hair --- even at 50. Big hair just requires a comb and some hairspray.

Love the Talking Heads.

Thinking back, Oingo Boingo was a great show, even though I saw them in the 90's ('92 in Vegas), and Violent Femmes as well in S.F. in '93. The audiences went crazy. So much energy.

Let's not forget New Order!

Oh you've got blue eyes
Oh you've got green eyes
Oh you've got grey eyes...

Janet, your list reflects a lot of my then record collection. I have tried or replace some of these on cd. Saw Simple Minds and The Stranglers live. Stranglers performance was quite controversial, with many people walking out and questions raised as to whether they were actually playing live?? I stayed and loved it. Simple Minds were amazing!! I currently have a best off collection on rotation in the car. Also have Echo and The Bunny,en on CD. And I agree there is a huge 80's influence in modern music at the moment.

Thinking also of

The Smiths
Human League
Joy Division (later New Oder) waving at April
ABC
Spandau Ballet
Level 42
Clock DVA

Oh my, I think there may be an 80's music fest at my place this afternoon lol!

Heheh, this thread is totally making me smile!

The program director of the radio station where I sometimes work wants me to do a regular 80s program (we do play a lot of the artists mentioned in this thread, interspersed with current indie/alternative music, plus lots of other stuff!). If the enthusiasm in our audience for the music of that era is anything like it is on this thread, we may have a hit!

I remember that suit well - what a fun thread!

Oh wow talk about a walk down memory lane. In the early 80s I was so into the New Romantic look - all those fab Brits - BF at the time was a model/actor/DJ so waiting for the latest NME to come out then off to update his collection with the latest EP. Some great memories of clubbing and dancing till the clubs closed. Deb love your music choices I listened to British and American groups (thinking early 80s) -The Clash, Blondie (more seventies) , B52s, The Pretenders, the Eurythmics, Wham I could go on for ever.

Found an eighties shot to share - taken April 1984 (30 years ago OMG)

Oh man, you girls are taking me back! I'm like Rachy - I never would have remembered David Byrne's suit being that big, because it was just a little bigger than what we were actually wearing.

I never favored shoulder pads because I have big ones already (shoulders), but I just remember '80s clothes as having lots of fabric - and it was good - bunching under a tiny belt, pulling up the cuffs, popping the collar, pleats, sharp shoulders, etc. I was always going for a v-shape from shoulders to waist. I had a few Victorian Jessica McClintock blouses with big shoulders, huge portrait collars that ended in points, and tiny, nipped-in waists. Deep sigh, missing those blouses. And those tunes.

XTC (Dukes of Stratosphear) - saw a killer Laserium with their music around '86 at Griffith Observatory
Psychedelic Furs
Split Enz
Queen
Styx
B-52s
Cars (my total fave - saw them in concert in '81 or '82, sooooo good)

Thank you, this was therapeutic!

Oh, Deborah, Janet, JJ, you are killing me! That's exactly the soundtrack to my teen life. And Love & Rockets, Red Flag, Ministry, did anyone add the Smiths? The Jesus & Mary Chain, The English Beat. And Squeeze (pre-Coffee for me)! Gang of Four, Wire. I'd add a ton of non-UK punk stuff too...so much great music. And the Sugarcubes (howdy Bjork!).
