My style preferences are too dressy for my life style. I never have occasions I need to really dress up for - I wish I would! I never shop even for a cocktail dress leave alone a gown because there is nowhere I can wear it. So when Angie had a post on shopping for a special occasion before you have it because you never know when you need it and need to be prepared did not ignite me into action: I thought that this would never happen to me!
However this year my hubby and I joined a ballroom dance club because we want to learn how to dance properly and because it is so much fun to do things together. We have lessons once a week and dance practices twice a week. They are pretty casual but I am glad o have an opportunity to wear my dresses and skirts to them because it is much more fun to dance in a skirt especially when it twirls.
Then there are social dances once a month. We have already been to one and dress code is pretty much a cocktail affair - no jeans. I have some dresses and skirts I can wear to them for now (of course would not mind to add to my dress capsule but I am OK for now).
Here is the problem: there is a big Gala like dance at Christmas time and we were told it is really dressy: half of the guys wear tuxes and majority of ladies are in long gowns. Long gown! How does is appeal to my dressy nature! I have never had one (except my wedding dress) but always wanted to have an occasion to wear it - and now I have! Of course I won't be ostracized if I wear a cocktail dress but what fun is in that, right?
So I went to do some gown shopping last Saturday - a VERY new activity for me. These are 3 I tried on:
1. http://www.melanielyne.com/cac.....ersey-gown
I really liked it and this red color is very good for me. Not sure if the dress itself is too over the top for the occasion and it is more than I would be willing to spend at this time.
2. http://www.laura.ca/18254-Illu.....-Gown.aspx
This one was fine too in a beautiful navy color with a sparkle. The back is problematic though as bra band would peek out.
3. http://www.laura.ca/17048-Lace.....tsuit.aspx
This was not a gown but a jumpsuit but strangely I really liked it. I wish it was not black but at least the nude base on the lace top part lightens things up. The first 2 dresses were beautiful but this jumpsuit felt more like my style.
Tanya (and anybody else who has experience with ballroom dancing) - is any of those a good choice for the event? Too much? Too little? I feel that I need them sans sleeves because it gets pretty warm while dancing and I also do not want a straight skirt - too movement constricting and not as much fun on the dance floor.
Here are more options I saw online but not in person (I wish there were fewer black dresses out there and more options with higher neckline):
4. http://www.laura.ca/17893-Cleo.....-Gown.aspx
not sure if this color is good for me
5. http://www.laura.ca/19126-Lace.....Dress.aspx
black!!!:-(
6.http://www.laura.ca/17650-Bead.....Dress.aspx
like the style, not sure about this color and neckline maybe too low
7. http://www.laura.ca/17464-Croc.....-Gown.aspx
the color says gold - again not sure if it would work.
8. http://www.laura.ca/17433-Abst.....-Gown.aspx
black again
and more jumpsuits - why ALL jumpsuits are black?
9 http://www.laura.ca/17216-Fran.....psuit.aspx
neckline may be too low

I will continuing dress scouting over the weekend - I have 1 month until the event. I will take hubby with me this time to take pictures and get his opinion - after all it is him who would have to dance with me!
Any of those strike you like a potential for me? Is jumpsuit appropriate for such event? I can us any help I can get!

I really want to shop for the dress locally and not online so if any fellow Canadians have other store suggestions I am all ears!

Sorry for such a long post. If you are still with me you deserve a medal!
