Super hero(ine) themed party

I've been invited to a party where we're supposed to dress like a super hero/heroine. Part of the party will be at this person's house but then we go out to a restaurant and then dancing.

I'm a little torn about what to wear and how to wear things. I could wear tights, thong underwear on top, a silver cape, a tiara, and my red patent leather boots and look wonder woman-esque. And I wonder if that will be too cheesy. I don't know how I feel about this.

I would like to look polished and cute but don't know if that's the goal of an event like this. If anyone has any ideas or if you've done something like that, I would much appreciate your thoughts.

And if anyone has ideas for guys, it would be super helpful for my husband too!

I found this list of superheroines on Wikipedia, with your gorgeous dark hair you could maybe try a Lara Croft Tomb Raider look.

I would avoid wearing tights and a thong in public at all costs.
You could wear black skinnies and a black top, black cat ears and go as Cat Woman. A ripped up shirt and some green body paint/hair dye would make your other half The Hulk

Do you have to be a specific superhero, or can you be generic? For example, you could do a black body suit-ninja kind of thing, or go all out as Elektra (that's who I would go as!). Or maybe a leotard + tights + boots + belt + cape, with face makeup (for example, a black band across the eyes as a faux mask).

Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't think for real I would ever go with underwear on the outside.

I think I can do whatever I want with it cciele. Either go as a known character or make up my own. I would like to do it with the least amount of fuss and $. I don't have time to do much shopping. I also don't want to buy anything that I wouldn't wear again. I like the idea of paint too - I think I could achieve a lot with that no matter the outfit.

As long as don have a body-hugging black outfit and black sunglasses, you'd be fine.

YES! How fun! I was going to say exactly who Bella suggested. Trinity from the Matrix. Body hugging black outfit, red patent boots, sunglasses, slicked back hair and a trench coat.

Hm, maybe you could be an enforcer from the League of Fashionistas, out to save the world from too-short pants -- then you could dress in an ultra-stylish/trendy outfit, with face paint as a mask, and something as a badge of office (medallion, cuffs, etc.).

I just wanted to hear that dressing as a superhero is one of my biggest nightmares. I don't have any helpful suggestions.

thanks Melllls - I'm not feeling so sure myself. Love the idea of Trinity as I can identify with the character too. I will post a photo when (if?) I do this. ulp.

Sorry, I've actually had friends suggest having such a party but it has never actually materialized. I just like dressing like me; I don't even like Halloween.

hmmmm.... on second thought, if I wear red patent boots, the red H&M trench might be a bit much. I"ll try it on and see. Maybe that's how I go over the top, by doing red on red. As my only other trench is yellow. Somehow I don't see Dick Tracey and Trinity colliding. Or I might just go without a trench. We'll be dancing so i'm sure i'll be plenty warm after a while. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Trinity sounds great - but if that doesn't work out, I like the Lara Croft idea: black tank, some sort of green/khaki/beige pants, and a ponytail does the trick.
