Striped pencil skirt?

Big markdown. More conference wear? Navy and cream stripes. Slightly shiny fabric. Great fit, but does it look like me?

Thanks Summer. Actually rather well, considering it's a striped bottom. Although I don't think I have much to wear it with, maybe I should give it a pass. All my other things have more of casual and soft/rough feel. This is very "shiny".

I could see it with my navy merino wool sweater.

Yes, why not! We constantly evolve our style! Get it! It's a cheerier piece than an all very black, still dressy-so perfect for your age and purposes. Fit is great!

Thanks Lyn. I just wonder if a different piece might not add more worth to the wardrobe. This is more on a level of my small dressy grey bag, I couldn't imagine my everyday cognac satchel and denim jacket with it. I'm usually not a fan of polyester, so this might be hard to integrate into the wardrobe. I'm not sure if I'm not only seduced by the great fit and my need for some appropriate outfits at the end of May.

I love it. Dressing it down would maybe fit your everyday life? I.e. tee's and denim. I like Deborah's suggestion.

Thanks Deborah! I like your inspiration picture, but I don't think this one would work quite like that... I found it on the website and it's definitely meant to be businesswear, paired with patent leather heels and blazer.

Thanks Harmonica! I think the style could be dressed down, but this specific skirt looks really dressy because of the fabric. I wore my denim jacket in the store and IMO it just looked confused paired with the skirt.

Deborahs inspiration board very tempting. The denim jacket.
That skirt would also look great with a crisp white or black blouse. Very summer, and a business staple.
Mot sure if you like crisper fabrications?

Thanks Olivegreen! No, I'm usually not into crisp. It's definitely the fabric that kept me from buying, not so much the style. I think if it would have been cotton or more textured/flat I would have bought it. I think I'm going to pass, even though the fit is great.

Totally agree with Olivegreen. That skirt is adorable and fits perfectly. Dress it up with a solid jacket or down with a denim jacket. That would become a workhorse for me and really work well for conferences, etc.

Good for you!! Sometimes sales goggles can lead us somewhere we wouldn't normally go, and then it becomes an orphan. It is one thing if you are consciously trying to shift your style, something else when its spontaneous and not singing to you.

Thanks Thistle! Yes, so true. And I'm not really looking to switch to a more "classic" look (which this skirt is to me), although I do want to play up the femine and dressy. But in a different way? If that makes sense.

Thanks Keturah! Yes, maybe. If I found the right one and it would fit as well. I can definitely see myself wearing more pencil skirts from time to time to change it up from the full skirts. And I've always liked stripes.

I hope you find a good jersey version that fits well or at least one you could easily get nipped and tucked for the right fit. I have done that even with cheap clearance items from Gap.

Of course, I am thinking of pencil skirts for my fall wardrobe this year, so I'm in Pencil Skirt Scouting Mode anyway.

It looks really good on you, but I completely understand that a too-dressy-for-your-life fabrication ruins it for your needs. Perhaps a jersey version will come along.

I think it looks good on you but I agree that it might not be quite your style, which I see as a bit more relaxed or effortless. I'm going to echo Ketirah's suggestion of a jersey version. The VC striped tube skirt is surprisingly versatile for me, and I'm not a pencil skirt person at all.

Oh that's too bad you passed on it, but good for you for knowing that you probably wouldn't wear it. I do see it fitting in to with your style in a dressed down, casual way.

I have found that pencil skirts naturally read so dressy / business that if you want them to work for smart casual too, you do really have to be careful about fabrication. Anything too shiny or suiting-like is a lot harder to dress down with a tee and denim jacket. My most versatile skirts are cotton/blends or knit.

Love it, keep it, I think you'll find it becomes a favorite piece in your wardrobe! Even though it's a pattern it's a neutral. You'll get lots of wear out of it.

Before reading the other comments, I felt like this was one of those pieces that a lot of YLFers would wear beautifully/love on you but wasn't quite right for your lifestyle. And then the comments proved me right. hehe I think you made the right choice in not getting it, even though I love the idea of striped skirts in general (and am hoping to sew up one for myself in the next year or two).

Diana, I'm definitely not the typical pencil skirt person either, especially because I'm not wearing heels ever. I do like the look of the right pencil skirt with flats though. I think I just need something a bit different.

Karie, yes I don't want wardrobe orphans...

Laura, that's it. And I don't wear business type clothing, can't stand polyester and so on... It just looked off with my casual tee and denim jacket. Wrong fabric to dress down.

Eva, yes! I suspected that too. It's interesting how we get that feel for the tune of the forum, right?

Suz, I'll keep looking for a pencil in a less dressy fabrication. I actually don't think it even has to be the typical jersey, I think something a bit more flat/textured would already help.
