Speaking of linen: buy or no?

I head to Mexico in a few days. I'm packing light and I haven't bought too much in advance of the trip. I'm very excited to go.

But lately I've been thinking about a linen shift I saw in a local shop and today I went and tried it on. It's from Nuthatch, a Maine brand, and I love the dress. I think it would be great on vacation and fun for the rest of the summer - but that's only a month or maybe six weeks. I can see it over jeans through the early part of Sept while it's still warm.

But that's not a ton of wear this year. And it's $200. I love it but I don't know - is it a good vacation splurge? (I don't mind one of those if it's the right one, this is the first long vacation with hubs only EVER.) what do you think?

Alternative is to wait and get a dress in Tulum.

It's cute enough, but I think you could find something similar in Mexico for a fraction of the price. I'm not in love with it...

Thanks Una. It's funny; I wrote this post a couple of hours ago and it's been sitting in drafts ... I just released it and posted it, but in the meantime I had sort of gotten over the dress. I like it more than you do but I don't want to spend that money on this dress when, as you rightly point out, I will likely find something similar/better for less there. Probably should have hit delete and not post.

I also love the dress. The cut is fabulous for you. And pockets!! When I saw from the side, I thought -- that's my white Kenzie linen dress! And it IS the same except for the stripes in front which make yours extra special -- but, I only paid $35 for mine.

Ach- I forgot about that EFry top - I LOVED it and coveted it last summer. I love it on you. I don't have much of an opinion on the linen dress - it's cute, but I'm not feeling like it's $200 cute. Is it sheer at all? Will you feel like you are wearing a hospital uniform after an hour? I'm just thinking aloud - mostly to keep myself awake. What is with the 3 pm slump I always seem to have ? zzzzzzz Back to work.

Probably just make do.
But, it is very summery- cool and you just look so chic in everything! I'm bad about pressuring myself into pre-,trip purchases that later might not seem to have longevity.
As more noodling, even though you have your decision, if it's linen- linen and will crease terribly, that will change the look. So to me there are certain garments that tolerate that, and others that depend on the pressed look for their appeal.
It might go on sale later, anyways!

Do I love it? YES. Does it look like it's worth $200? YES. Would I pay $200? Probably not. But I do love it, and it looks wonderful on you. This is no help at all, is it?

Well, I'm loving linen this summer. Shirts and shirt dresses. Like Suz, I got mine under $50. I'm also thinking these will be GREAT for my next mid-winter escape.

I think this looks very nice on you, and I don't know that you'll get something like it where you are going. That said, at $200 you should be over the rainbow in love with it.

It would be so much easier to make decisions if you just stopped looking so good in everything... Dang it!

I like sack dresses but I am with Lisa in that I see it as a bit too big on you? Just an impression? I too LOVE today's outfit - you look gorgeous!

Lisap and Chouette: nothing gets by you two, does it? I was trying to get away with a size too big because they had sold out of my size. So yes, another reason to pass. Not to mention that now I can't get the hospital gown idea out of my head!

I know there will be something better somewhere else.

Everything looks cute on you so I am forcing myself to support only the best of the best.
I am all for expensive if you get your money's worth but it's not clear that the finishing is of such high quality that it warrants the price?
And it does have just a hint of classic linen dish towel going on too?

It's cute and cool, but I say no for two reasons:
1) It doesn't seem fab enough for the money/amount of wear you'll get out of it, and
2) It doesn't say "first long vacation with hubs," like it could...if you know what I mean.

It's definitely a nice dress and you look fabulous in an effortlessly cool linen shift dress. Seems like you've had this on your mind for a while!

It definitely is too expensive at $200 though. I think you might be able to find something more beachy at Tulum that would scream "I'm on a much-deserved vacation with my husband after ages" and yet look equally appropriate back home

It does look cute, but not cute enough to drop $200 on it at the end of the season. The outfit you have on today (well, yesterday) is super cute. And I totally agree with Zibbets' comment #2!

I like my hospital gown!! And mine really is hospital gown without the stripes.

But yes, if it is too big, then back it goes. You won't need it.

Suz, if I can't get this out of my head, I'm just going to stitch together a few dishtowels.
