So, what's very 2014?

I've seen Angie refer to some recent looks here as very 2014. Being unattuned to spring trends (because that is a ways away), what IS 2014? Not in terms of items which I kind of know, but in terms of putting together outfits - Ceit's BF look and Mo's python pants with b/w top for example. What are the common denominators?

Someone please educate my sorry self!

I'd love to listen in, too, as I was iffy on that very outfit that both Angie and Anna, both quite fashion versed, loved.

To me, the first thing that comes to mind are booties, loafers and rolled up boyfriends or chinos, at least for Spring.

from my perspective: sweatpants/sporty, crop tops, minimalist sandals, wide leg soft pants, pointy toes...

cropped sweaters is something that I'm keeping an eye out for, but not seeing outside of really low quality junior stuff at the price ranges I usually look at.

I guess my question is not so much the items but the outfits... Again, using Mo and Ceit as examples if possible! :). Glad I'm not alone though....

Prints seem to be coming back; for a while there it was all solids and maybe a stripe or colorblock occasionally. A lot of prints I haven't seen in a while, like florals at all scales and little ditsy prints. And faux-prints, I.e. sweaters in a marled color scheme or textured multicolor look.

Seems to me the "unexpected" is def. on trend for 2014. Mixed ethnic and animal patterns, distressed jeans rolled up with pointy loafers, pastels in modern shapes, florals in odd places (shoes, bombers).

I think the single most common element that's making things look current is the "fluid fit."

certainly variety. One big thing i am seeing, possibly because i am seriously looking, are a lot more elbow sleeves in not just t-shirts, but dresses and other types of tops too.

definately loafers, lots of styles and lengths in pants. skinnies seem to be less-like Angie said-the sausage casing look is going by, by.

havn;t seen much in forcasters yet this spring, but remembering last spring an article said gladiator sandals were going out, but what I am seeing is they are still very much "in".
Bottom line for me is--It is going to be fun to experiment with putting together outfits from a bigger variety of items.
I am not seeing the pinks I thought were supposed to be out there-only pink I am seeing is the bubble gum pink, and it is not my color.

I think I get what Una meant - what is it about the compilation of the outfits that makes them so 2014. Not what are the separate trends. How it's all put together. Like pattern mixing was a thing a few years back. Juxtaposition was fresh and new a few seasons before that, etc, etc.

I am saying this off the cuff but I remember reading somethig Angie said that 2014 was to do with juxtapositions? I can't recall where I read it or if indeed it was an actual thing or my own interpretation!

Five things:

Irregular Outfit Juxtaposition - especially mixing up super casual with super formal. Ball gowns with Wedge Sneakers. Sequins with shredded jeans. Seasonally confused outfits.
Oversized with JES (Just Enough Structure)
Wearing Modern Classics with Trends (my best) - e.g. Classic white Salvatore Ferragamo loafers with baggy BF jeans, upscale sweatshirt and clutch.
It's Hip to be Square - so called nerdy and frumpy and hectically unfashionable looks are fashion forward. Catwalks and street style at all the fashion weeks are full of this look.
High-Low style - (I love this one too).

Fashion is all about CREATING YOUR OWN LOOK. Take the trends and run with them your way.

And I love it.

AND, Anne cracks me up.

What mo said is where I really want to learn to do. Not replace large numbers of things but add a few and toss a few and keep creating new looks from the base. Sometimes by adding the new thing but sometimes just recombining.

YES!! You did!! Here it is!!

Here's what Angie said:

2013 is about two general style concepts:

Unstructured Structure
Irregular Item Juxtapositions

So...we still have irregular item juxtaposition (that's what made Mo's outfit so 2014).

"Unstructured structure" has morphed a bit into oversized with just-enough-structure.

I think the other three categories are partially encapsulated by #2. But the "trend" items change.
