Small Changes, Big Difference (Descriptions for Michelle included)

I really struggle with warm weather outfits. So this Spring and Summer, I thought I'd see how I can fine tune what I would normally grab and wear.

So today I'm thinking about my shorts. There was a recent thread about mom jeans....would you call these "mom shorts?"

Is this plaid shirt unflattering? Should I just toss it? What about the navy shorts? Should I toss it all and start over?

I like the second picture better, particularly the shorts, but I think the biggest change is your position! The way you are standing in the improved picture makes the shirt look good.

Michelle, I know you can't comment on the plaid shirt specifically, but I thought you could kinda envision the changes I made with the earrings, shoes and change of colored shorts, no?

both looks are cute IMO- although I agree the black shoes aren't the best in the first pic. I don't think i"d call those "mom shorts" they fit you well and you should be able to work them into your summer wardrobe quite well. Maybe a funkier top than the classic plaid, a string of beads and fun shoes.

AJ, I adore your thoughtfulness. You rock.

I really like both pairs of shorts - the first for extremely casual kick around activities, and the second for more regular MOTG settings. Like the shoes in both outfits too.

The shirt seems boxy in the wrong kind of way, like I want to put a webbing belt over it. So it's salvageable from that point of view. How does that idea grab you?

I thought you gals were going to tell me to get rid of the denim shorts! Kim, I will see what else I can come up with.

Angie & Anne - I think you're right, the plaid top is too boxy. Angie, it's too hot here in the summer to belt. So I think I'll just get rid of this one. Thanks for your input!

My thought was to remove the sleeves from the plaid shirt. They are a bit too close to being puff sleeves.
If is is judged as being too boxy all over than it wouldn't be worth removing the sleeves, unless you want to get into re-shaping the sides or adding waist darts, but you have kids to raise anyway so might as well toss it. I know I had to quit sewing while raising my kids.

I love the colors in the shirt -- so bright and springy. It looks better in the 2nd photo than the first; the first one make it look really boxy.

I wouldn't go as far as calling the first shorts Mom shorts, but they are of a color I associate with mom jeans. They would be great for casual outfits, and a good foundation for funky twists. Maybe a floaty ditsy floral top or a tank with a short-sleeve cascading cardi.

I like the navy shorts! The ties give them a playful feeling.
