Skirt - keep?

Hi everyone, I am slowly getting to show you some of the lovely items from Deborah.
Today it is this black skirt. It is made by Veronica Maine, a brand I like that does good quality work.

Now Deborah won't be in the least offended if I don't keep this, and I do have a few qualms. It is at least a size bigger than I usually wear, and so hangs on the hips (and on Deborah's too), which makes it fullest at my thighs which I'm a little sensitive about.

When I walked into the room DD9 said " Are you wearing THAT?" and said they didn't go together.

I do realise black is a hard garment colour to see, but to the extent you can, I'd love your comments.

Anne I wont be offended at all if you don't keep it:) I don't think it makes you look big at all, however I feel the style of skirt lends it self to a top that has a firm welted hem. Similar idea to Angie's sweater in #1

Or you could attempt a semi tuck as that would also create some shape.

Now if this skirt is sitting on your hips then the fit might be off for you, because I do think it's meant to sit on the waist.

Thanks Deborah. I did actually start wearing it with semi tuck and DD pulled it out. She doesn't really get that concept yet! I forgot to change it back before the pic was taken.

It looks like a tulip style skirt? I agree with Deborah. I like it and don't think it makes you look big. Maybe try another style top as D suggests to give you more waist definition. That top is very nice though

I love this skirt and I would love similar one in my wardrobe. It's a different style of bottom and with the right kind of top it would be a nice change from the more straight/classic style (the one from Suz). It's somewhat relaxed but still sleek (which I loved on you) and the shape actually makes the overall silhouette very interesting.

I like the skirt. I cannot see that it is large in the photo, but I believe you. If it's uncomfortable, you will never wear it anyway, but if it feels good than I say keep and hunt for flattering tops to wear with it.

I like the skirt very very much. It's a great shape with good drape, yet relaxed and so comfy. I would wear it with a V neck pullover tucked in(considering that it's lose). You have a great skirt that's very similar, don't you?

I actually like it the way it's styled here. I'd just add a warm scarf and be good to go!

The skirt fit looks intentional to me too but you are the one wearing it so it has to feel right to you. Try to get "used" to the new fit/shape before you decide. It is sometimes hard to move away from a favorite silhouette or fit until the eye gets accustomed to the change.

I like the skirt a lot and don't think it makes your thighs look big at all. However, styled in this way, with the longer untucked top and tall boots it does emphasize your long waistedness a bit. It does look as if it sits a little bit low, which also affects that perception. I think I'd try with a slightly shorter top or a semi tucked one, or maybe shorter boots to show more leg.

could you take a tiny tuck in the waistband to make it sit a little higher perhaps? That might also fix the proportion but would effectively shorten the skirt. Are you ok with that?

If you can easily alter the waistband so it fits where it is supposed to, it would be a good addition. It's the fit that is the problem here.

It looks like it could be altered a little but I think you look great, and I like the top with it. I have no idea which part of this outfit DD9 thought didn't go together.

I don't think you look big anywhere and while we're at it, I don't see long waisted-ness either, you look unusually well proportioned to me, so you must already be very good at choosing what works for you.

I like these bolder outfits you've been wearing and that red color is great on you.

I really like the skirt on you and it does not look big in the photo. It looks like it would be worth having altered, if needed.
DD needs to adjust her eye by seeing the semi-tuck in action...maybe pinterest or WIWs.

Thanks everyone! Brooklyn it isn't exactly tulip shaped but a bit like that - pleated around the top. I may be able to just add one more pleat in myself to alter it to fit at the waist - I think that would put the fullness higher, which I would prefer.

I'll also get back to you all with some other tops (not tonight though - it is bedtime!)

Isobel I think the secret to my looking proportional in this look is wearing a skirt with quite high heels (plus the boots have a bit of a platform in them). I am very long waisted/ torsoed underneath!

The skirt looks great in the pictures, not too large. Did you try something tucked in?

I agree, may be the problem is in the waist and high-hip fit. Being a little fuller in the hip is not an issue per se, and is not unflattering. So the issue may be, how does it need to fit to work with tops?
