Skinny jeans for curvy girls???

Just back from Yorkdale mall in Toronto with the Toronto YLF contingent, lol

I will save the rest of the story for Michelle to tell...but a very fun day

Anyway, I mentioned I do not have skinny jeans and the girls were teasing me to try some...no success, tried Lucky, and 7 for All Mankind doesn't even stock my size,

So, and I can't believe I'm writing this, but I am a curvy almost pear, size 12/14...what can I try or maybe skinnies are not for me? I see lots of people my size or bigger and like their outfit, but cringe on me...sigh..

Did I mention how fun today was?

I know how you feel about the skinny jeans, but believe me you can wear this look! If you are ready to stick your toe in, the wonderful ladies here will make it happen

I have a suggestion...have you considered starting out with a jean legging (jegging) type pant? OR a non-jean skinny, like a pair of ponte pants? Jeans shopping can be frustrating at any time, so adding in the "first time skinnies" element can make it worse. I have only one pair of skinny jeans, and it is actually a denim legging, i.e. looks like a jean but has an elastic waistband and a lot more stretch than a regular pair of jeans. This might be a better first step?

I'm a pear shape, and wear Gap really skinny and Gap always straight, AT modern slim, and Ag stilt for my skinny jeans. I've often had success with the Joe's brand of jeans too, but haven't tried their skinnies yet.

If you can find some with so much stretch that they almost feel like a knit, you'll be home free (more than 2 or 3% Spandex). A "jegging" that is hanging with the regular jeans (not with the leggings) will be more substantial. The pockets are often stitched down in the front and the fly is just pretend. Sometimes they button and sometimes not. Many brands like the Gap will actually say, "Curvy Fit". If you're willing to hunt and try on a LOT of jeans, you can find skinnies that fit and flatter your curves.

As you saw this afternoon I am considerably curvier than you, and I now wear skinnies all the time. My fave is a ponte knit, as Kitty so wisely pointed out, but jeggings are also a fabulous idea.
Another suggestion...For some curvies, straight leg pants can take the place of skinnies in the wardrobe. They may make us feel less self-conscious, but provide the same streamlined leg look and are styled in pretty much the exact same way as skinnies. Much as I enjoy my skinnies, my pair of "true straight" pants from the gap is currently one of my favourite wardrobe items -- so much so that I intend to duplicate it the moment I'm down a size. My straight leg grey jeans get tons of wear too for the same reason.
Regardless of whether you go skinny or straight, just make sure you're wearing long tops with your slim trousers!

So far, I've had reasonably good luck with Old Navy's "The Sweetheart" skinny jeans, KUT from the Kloth brand skinny jeans, and also GAP's "Really Skinny" pants (not jeans, but their 'really skinny' premium pants which come in black and in grey).

I need to go and try on GAP's "Always Skinny" jeans and their "Real Straight" jeans - but so far, I'm impressed with their "Really Skinny" pants - in fact, today was the first day I was able to wear skinny pants tucked into tall boots (yay - I can be a lemming now...lol). In the meantime, the ON "Sweetheart" skinny jeans have worked out reasonably well for wearing with flats, and the KUT from the Kloth jeans have worked very well with sandals, flats and short booties, but I haven't yet tried tucking them into tall boots.

I'm with HelloKitty - I think you might want to try skinny pants or jeggings/leans first, as opposed to actual jeans. The jeans aren't always so easy to tuck into boots, and at this time of year, you want something you can tuck into boots, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm so pleased with my brand-new GAP "Really Skinny" pants - extremely comfortable and a lot easier to deal with than jeans.

Do not despair - there is a pair of skinny jeans/leans (ie. jeggings)/pants out there for you.

I think "leans" (YLF's better term for "jeggings") is a great idea, as per HelloKitty.

Just for the record, I had to size down for GAP 'premium' 1969 jeans, but I actually sized up for the Really Skinny pants.

Try GAP's "Really Skinny" pants next. They look great, and are extremely comfortable.

In terms of skinny jeans - so far, the KUT from the Kloth brand has been the best for me in terms of flattery and fit, without veering into $200+ jeans territory. That said, I don't know if these are available in Canada.

In the meantime, I have also had kind of a tough time finding skinny jeans/leans/pants that I feel comfortable in, and I ended up buying GAP's "Long and Lean" jeans (not skinny at all) and their "Really Skinny" premium pants *instead* of skinny jeans. I got so tired of trying to find skinny jeans that worked, and ended up with the Really Skinny premium pants from GAP instead - very happy with these.

You will find a pair that you feel good in - promise!

I have a pair of AT Curvy Slim jeans that I find comfy and flattering. They are the same idea as Michelle's straight legs. Part of the way to skinny but not all the way. They are out of most sizes in the link below but you can get the idea.

I also like the ON skinny sweetheart jean. They have a little bit of extra room in the thigh and don't flatten my already flat bum.

I resisted skinny jeans for a long time. I am petite and a small size, but hourglass-shaped with full thighs, making pants a challenge. I love my Paige Denim skinnies! They have plenty of stretch, but hold their shape. They aren't as super-low-rise as some I tried on, so I don't show bum cleavage when I sit down (ew).

The saleslady was very helpful when I was trying on skinnies. She said that it depends a lot on the leg opening. Sure enough, I couldn't even get most of the pairs up over my knees due to my full thighs. I just kept trying on and eventually found a great pair! Take advantage of the salespeople, because they know the brands on their floor, and can really point you toward designs that are more likely to flatter you.

I'll echo others suggestion about trying straight leg instead of skinny. I love my James Jeans Hunters. They look sleek but don't make me feel as self conscious as skinnies. They tuck into boots just fine, too.

As a short, curvy pear, I also wanted to chime in and say try straight leg jeans. I recently bought my first pair from the LOFT, and I love them more than my Old Navy Sweetheart skinny because they give the appearance of skinny jeans without all the emphasis on my thighs and hips, and I don't feel like I have to wear them with a tunic or longer top like I do with the true skinny jeans. The leg openings are still narrow enough to tuck into boots too.
