Should I keep or return these shorts?

I've been thinking of trying winter shorts and ended up taking these home. I'd appreciate some feedback on if they work or not They have a lot of volume and I'm not sure about the higher waist. I was hoping to use the boots for balance, but looking at the photos, I'm not sure how well they work.

I also liked this pair, are they better?

I think I like the shorts, but my eye would like to see a sleeker boot with them. Right now you have a lot of volume below the waist and not much above it. Not, of course, that I know anything. But I think I would prefer the shorts with a boot that fits to your calf.

I think Stephanie is right with wanting a sleeker boot, but only if it's a tall boot like this; I think you could do a slouchier, looser boot if it was a lot shorter so you've got some of your nice legs separating the volume. I like the higher waist myself; I think the other ones you linked will be just as voluminous so maybe it's just a question of which fits you and your wardrobe.

I LOVE the shorts! Please keep them.

The boots are sweet, but may I suggest swapping out the tights. Try sheer black instead.

I like the shorts and agree with Aida. Also, I can't tell if it's just the lighting in the photo, but the tights look quite shiny. If that's the case in real life, I think I would prefer to pair shorts with something more matte. The shiny tights plus the shorts gives me a little bit of a Jane Fonda aerobics vibe.

Steph - haha, that's a great mental picture! But the tights aren't actually shiny...just gray ribbed sweater tights

I've tried some different shorts combinations. I think I really like the look of the sheer stockings with them, in picture 1.

I'm trying to figure out tops to pair them with. I like them with button-up tops tucked in. Can I layer over the self-belt waist for warmth, as in pictures 2 and 3, or does that look off? Any other ideas for tops?

For those suggesting a sleeker leg line, I tried out ankle boots. But I think with the sheer tights, it may be a bit much. Would it possibly work with something more opaque?

Great shorts, glad you decided to keep them! I actually like the pic 2 best, but my untrained eye is still new to the look (still looking for a pair of winter shorts to wear with boots!). Can you slouch the boots a bit more? I'd love to see a pair of sleek boots with the shorts

I like #2 and 3 - but still think it would look better with some sleeker boots. I also like #4, but think you should put opaque tights with the booties! Great shorts - and Great legs!

I agree that #1 looks better with the sheer hose, great look! I like the tops in #2 and 3, but I also want to see the boots scrunched down more like Isabella suggested. #4 would probably look better with your ribbed sweater tights. I think you're getting the hang of these

Isabella, Marley, and Aida - thanks for the suggestions I'll try a bit more scrunch on the boots and opaque tights with the ankle boots.

I'd like to find a couple ways to wear these before I snip the tags, and am starting to feel like I'm on the way...

I also like 2 and 3, and 4 let's see it with different tights.

Other suggestions: faux fur vest, oversized chunky cardi that's about the same length as the shorts, oversized sweater (I like those looks in the fall Nordstrom catalog when they were paired with the tweed Sanctuary shorts).
