Search for the perfect Fall trench

Hi YLFers!

Debora's daughter here. As I look forward to the brisk Brooklyn Fall days ahead and subsequently begin a new boyfriend-free stage of my life, my wise mother advised that a brand new trench would be the perfect replacement for the ex (and also less of a pain in the a**).

So! I look to you for help in hunting down a fabulous substitute. (A coat, not a man.) Now, down to business. Here's what I'm looking for:

Currently waffling between searching for something that's a bit more casual, edgy, and suitable for throwing on over skinny jeans, or...a classic, tailored piece that's ideal for pairing with a vintage dress. (My style has been skewing more Mad Men-inspired these days.)

I'd welcome suggestions for either look. Thanks in advance!

LOFT had some nice trenches this year. Not sure if any are available now, but you might want to keep them in mind as the fall stuff debuts.

i think a classic trench would look great over skinnys with edgier accessories to make the trench read younger.

this classic trench from br can go either way and is shown on the model with a sweater and jeans.

Nordstrom had an awesome faux leather trench at the anniversary sale that Angie recommended. I think someone posted a picture wearing it recently. Some people find faux leather uncomfortable because it isn't breathable, but I kind of like that when it gets cold...

However I think it's a good silhouette to look for. Very full skirt. Even my clueless brother immediately said "very 50's" when he saw it.

H&M has a trench similar to it now, but not in the same colors. I'm not sure if it's quite as full or retro in styling because I haven't had it on, but it's an inexpensive option.

Hi Kindrex! Sorry to hear about your break-up! Surely, he must not have been that great if he can be replaced by a trenchcoat I don't see as many choices for trenchcoats now compared to in the spring.

If you want to go for something fun & trendy, maybe you can try on the tiered ruffled ones:

Maya, your H&M coat is beautiful...I'll have to swing by and see if they have anything comparable for this season. Shana, I especially liked the Soia & Kyo coat. The piping on the tan version is quite pretty. Hmmm...it's on sale at the moment, too. Something to mull over....

Hi Everyone! This is my first response here:)
I have to echo the BR recommendation. Last fall, I searched long and wide for the "perfect trench". After many returns / exchanges, I tried BR's classic trench and fell in love. They tweak the design here and there every season, but they always carry one.
Also, There is a BR in store 40% coupon, usable only on thursdays (this month) and valid for one full price item. Just walk into any BR store, any day other than thursday and ask for one! Good Luck!

I recently bought a feminine, tailored, classic trench. It was a summer sale item so it's not available anymore. Just wanted to say that I had with me for a long weekend trip where I had planned to wear it over dresses, but I actually felt super fab wearing it over jeans too. In your case maybe put the $$ behind a classic, tailored piece and pick up a fun style from H&M. I noticed they are advertising a shorter one that looks nice.

I really love that magenta one April posted. From my NY days, I feel that would be perfect for a girl in Brooklyn. Plus it will work casual because of its color BUT will work in more formal settings because of the shape. I have a great trench from H&M from a few years ago. I think they tend to have a few good options each season.
