Sack dresses vs. oversized sweaters

Sack dress -- That's such a lovely term isn't it? Rolls right off the tongue.

Anyway! A sack dress or two are tops on my list for fall. I just rec'd the new Victoria's Secret catalog with a fall preview, and in addition to seeing those new loose, pleated, tapered pants that Angie blogged about, they had this:

Does this qualify as a sack dress? I am not in love with this version, I'd like something a little more refined, but I want to make sure I know what to look for.

I don't really see that as a sack dress. The length, material, and style just make it look like a sweater to me. It's a tunic and not a dress. The banded bottom also leaves me cold, and adds to the tunic/top vibe. I would not think to wear it as a dress. Are you looking for something to wear as a dress, or over jeans?

Personally I don't mind them unbelted at all, and actually prefer them that way...but to each her own.

I agree with Maya on this dress.
You can spell is 'saque' if it makes you feel any better LOL
I'm actually loving the look right now. Look for something that fits in the shoulder and drops straight down, or in sleeveless versions go straight down from the underarm.
I think the unbelted versions look particularly good on us apple shapes, Maya. It gives the illusion that under there is a slimmer waist, which may not actually be the case.

I have never liked belts on me, Khris. I can wear thin ones, but they are too uncomfortable for me to leave on all day. I always end up taking them off within a few hours.

I like them on other people though. BUT, with sack dresses, I prefer them to just be sack dresses...not "reined in"...even if you do have a waist.

That's a jumper (a sweater) - not a dress. I like sack dresses unbelted too. In fact, I LOVE them. I think it’s liberating to wear a tasteful muumuu and still look and feel fabulous.

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between a sack dress and a shift dress?

My guess would be that a shift dress has more structure and is more fitted and a sack dress is more loose in structure.

Obviously, I am not the expert!

Hmm I've seen shift and sack used interchangeably, though I think that shift is basically straight up and down, and sack is more voluminous and loose.
There are a couple of fall sack dresses on Max Studio site that I've been eyeing, but they are all black or grey, and I feel like I need to branch out

I would guess shift = more of a column look, and sack = more volume., especially at the bottom. But I am curious about the official explanation!

(P.S. Angie, I think I saw your pretty yellow-and-grey sack dress at AT. Was that it? It looked very much like you!)
