*Raw* denim is made of fabric that hasn't been washed/softened/finished. So you break it in yourself, old style. Usually it's 100% cotton.

The selvedge is the edge of the fabric as it's milled. (Firecracker and other textilistas can explain it better and how the edges differ with quality of fabric.) "Selvedge jeans" are cut with the outer leg seams running along that edge. That can be done with pre-washed/softened fabric as well. As far as I can tell it's a bit like surgeon's cuffs, not much function but people like to show it off.

I bought black at BF's request (he gets veto power on new purchases because I wear the same garments almost all the time) and because black goes further in a very small wardrobe. They won't fade as dramatically as indigo jeans do.
Right now there's a whole lot of excess at the bottom. Attached picture isn't styled or intentional, was taken when trying on boots.
