purple shirt dress and new picture taking method

Debora was lovely enough to buy this dress for me from H&M after it sold out near me (I'm not spoiled! I tried to stop her but I was too late :p). Anyway, I'm struggling with the belt (don't be too surprised now). I can't figure out how to tie it, or if I should just leave it off completely and have the belt loops removed.

I also took these in my brother's former room using the timer but they still didn't come out great. He took his lamp with him when he moved out so the lighting in there is pretty bad. I'm not sure if they are any better than my usual crappy mirror shots...
p.s. sorry for the messy hair and dour expression. I feel silly smiling for pictures I take of myself. Also also, I am so glad to be back in contacts again

I love it! i think the belt looks fine the way it is, but think it would look even better with a different belt for other days too. Maybe a wider elastic belt?

love it! I would look for other belt options, but that one will work if you iron it really nice and tie a neat square knot.

Yeah, the dress came by mail so it's a little wrinkled. I have it in a square knot in the picture but it's probably sloppy!

It is a nicely flattering dress on you (I don't know what the 'other' one looked like to compare)

I think this belt does fine and a contrasting belt would be another good look.

Be sure to try it with leggings and/or with a cheeky jacket for more looks. . .

I like it! It reminds me of the blue Old Navy shirtdress in Angie's store, which I have and love. I think the belt looks fine but it would also look great with a different belt.

The dress looks great on you! The fit and color are both really flattering. As far as the belt goes, I'm a belt novice myself so can't really help you. But I think it would be cute with a different belt, like a 2" elastic one that you hopefully will locate

Lovely dress on you Maya! I am by no means an expert being only new on the site but I feel that your gorgeous waist is getting a bit lost in the fabric? A belt option maybe you could go far a tan leather belt slung a bit lower onto your hips and see what that looks like?

Forgot to say about the belt - Angie often suggests swapping the fabric belt in cases like this. I am still looking for a suitable belt for my shirtdress. Otherwise I would just do a square knot in front.

I love the dress on you, it's a definite ten. When you find your stretch belt your look will be complete. I love the purple combined with the red Clarks sandals.

I think this dress is very flattering on you Maya, particularly with the belt to give your waist definition. And Ilove the combo of the purple dress and red shoes together, they make each other "pop". Please keep the dress and love wearing it!

Maya, love the dress on you and you mastered the intricacies of the self-timer! I'm impressed! What your pictures fail to show is the lovely spring-like purple shade of the dress. Love how you paired it with the red shoes. I can also picture it with the elusive 2" elastic belt if you decide to keep it.

I love this dress on you! It's a shame they don't have more. You could go beltless, or use a leather belt (or a red one to match your shoes). You could also unbutton the top a bit and wear a contrasting camisole underneath (I've seen a few other bloggers wear this look well) and pair with boots for a more casual look. Great versatile piece!

Oh, I love the purple dress! It really flatters your shape and makes you look very hourglass-y! I agree with everyone else: swap out the belt and it will look stunning!

Soo..I have a dumb question. Is it going to look weird if I wear this dress with a black belt? I like my belts to match, especially with this dress. It just seems right to have less contrast. But...there is no way I'm going to try and hunt down a perfectly matching belt that is also the right size and width for me.

And another dumb question: If I swap belts, should I put the new belt through the belt loops or just put it on top? I think if I do the latter, the belt loops will show a bit because whatever belt I substitute will not be wide enough to cover them.

I am soooo clueless about belts!

Either wear the belt in the loops or remove the loops. I think you have lots of options for colors... black, tan, brown, cream. try out some options!

Personally, I like it with no belt as opposed to the belt that comes with it. Not sure if I would like it be better if with a different belt. It looks great!

Wow, Maya, I love this dress on you! Deb, you wanna get me one too??? Just kidding (H&M clothes never fit me right). I really like this alot more than the other shirt dress - it has a very chic, sophisticated feel to it and the fit is great. I think it looks great unbelted as well as with the fabric tie so I don't think there's any reason to put it on hold. I can picture it with a nice woven/braided belt like this:

I've seen them before that are stretchy and just have a woven section near the buckle. Or how about one of those distressed leather belts that Angie blogged about in the spring trends post? I know you don't wear alot of brown, but I kind of picture a brown belt with the dress but that could be because it reads navy rather than purple on my screen.

Black will totally work Maya. The contrast won't be too high at all. As for loops I say just go over the top. Who cares if you can see a bt of the loops tucking out underneath?
