Outfit Ensemble Trend Advice

Possible MOTG? denim skirt + leggins

I've seen many wearing similar looks, but never really sported this myself, but I see it as very functional and practical. This is new to me and I feel a bit out of my comfort zone, but I'm not quite sure why. Maybe because this is a bit too casual and lacking edge? Suggestions are very welcome!

Honest comments, please!

#1 the basics: t-shirt, denim skirt, leggings, canvas shoes (and pearls)
#2-3 with utility jacket + scarf
#4-5 with green jacket + scarf

I think that your legs would look longer with either the leggings or skirt but not both.

However, ballet flats or skimmers rather than the sneakers would give the outfit a more sophisticated, adult feel. Perhaps try black legging with a black skirt to elongate and polish the look.

Something about the proportions is off ... perhaps you need a longer top? Perhaps the skirt needs to be hemmed shorter? I don't know what the guidelines are here, but I'd say it boils down to proportions.

qpswan and anne: I agree totally that this sort of "slices me up" and hence shortens my whole apperence. I usually are very concious of elonating elements, but think I have tried to do too many things here and lost the path. Amongst other, I was thinking an outfit with the skirt that was a bit warmer than bare legs...

I think the skirt needs to be a bit shorter in order to look good with this. Also I would try longer leggings for leghtening effect. I also agree with what you said about too many things going on. I like leggings with skirts a lot and usually try to stick with 2 colors only and not too many other items or details so it wouldn't distruct from overall look

I am not a leggings person at all and I would love to see the skirt as is, without leggings!

I'm guessing you're wearing the leggings for warmth. Have you seen Angie's MOTG formula that has a denim skirt and leggings? Here it is for trouble shooting ideas.

Yes, the leggings is for warmth, and I do prefer sans. ANd agree that I have to streamline this look and make it way simpler. Great link and those outfits looks sooo much better. I'm not sure if I want to bother about this look at time being, because I don't have a good idea how to do it. Hmm... maybe some sleep will help, so I'll look more into this later

Hmm I actually really love #5 because the long vertical scarf kind of breaks up the horizontal break up (if that makes sense). I am wondering if a shorter denim skirt might work better with these leggings, OR a shoe with a lower vamp?

You have such an eye for spotting proportions and possibilites, Aida! Thanks for commenting. I see what you mean about the scarf making a horizontal break up and agree. I also think you are right about shorter skirt or lower vamp shoes. BUT I have to work with what I have (no need for mini denim skirt), so maybe a darker jacket or topper would helt på elongate the appearence? Or even a darker T might help, too?

A dark cropped jacket to balance the leggings and nude or low vamped shoed could make it work well! Cute jackets!

Thanks Meredith! Yes a cropped dark jacket would be a good choice, but I don't have any. This look was really more difficult than I imagined

I'm tempted to try out the boyfriend jeans + blouse formula instead. Years ago I was sporting a similar look, but leaning more towards military/utility pants. I loved it because of the feminine / masculine contrast and comfort, though was no apple tendencies at that time

I think just changing the shoes would make a big deal of difference as at least 2 if not 3 of the hotizontals come from the shoe itself. Btw that green jacket is so awesome!

Harmonica, I think the leggings need to pulled up a fraction making them shorter. I think this will solve your proportion problem, they look a little long to me. I also would suggest a lower vamp shoe like a ballet flat or sandal. The sneakers are cute but maybe not ideal for this look (but I'm not a fan of sneaked and skirts so that's just my opinion. Generally I love this look for you.

I really like #5 (and #3 too)! I much prefer the scarf as the pearls seem out of place with such a casual outfit. I think they would also be cute with ballet flats but I don't mind the sneakers! Thanks for the MOTG outfit inspiration. I may try my denim pencil skirt with leggings and sneaks too!

I'm not crazy about the leggings here. If you need warmth I think it would look better with tights, or with bare legs and boots.

Very interesting how the comments differ, and I read that as this has potential but I have to work with proportions and thinking of elongating effects. Sandals would be great, but in this case it is too cold. If I could wear sandals, I'd skip the leggings But I've got black ballet flats (patent leather) and could also make the leggings both shorter or longer. Usually, I go with tights because of the elongating effect.
