Portland OR weather - any tips for dressing?

Heading out to visit the boy's family this week. I'm so used to broiling hot that I'm wondering what you Portlandians wear in summer. Can I wear jeans? I think I've actually forgotten what moderate temp summer even means. . .

The weather is just like Seattle. It will be hot till Tuesday. Then mild. Bring jeans.

Define mild - will I need a light sweater? A jacket? Jeez, your summer sounds like Austin late fall.

It really cools off in the evening - you will want a layer. It's wonderful.

A mild Summer to me is when temperatures reach an all day high of the low 70s. It's cool in the morning for sure. Below 70 is an awful Summer in my book. Cold

Anything over 30 degrees Celsius is what I call a hot Summer - with or without humidity. I think that's 88 Fahrenheit and above. Below 30 degrees is not hot (for me).

And then all this talk of hot and cold goes haywire when you're in A/C :(. I can't stand it.

Funny how mild begins to change meanings depending on where you're coming from! My folks come up here each summer from Arizona and need to wear jeans and LS sleeve shirts for a few days until they acclimate!

Definitely bring layers. Monday and Tuesday are supposed to be high 80s going down to low 60s in the evenings. The rest of the week looks like lower 80's during the day. Jeans and layers will absolutely be appropriate, especially for evenings. But you might find them too warm for the daytime.

Hahahaha! You'll FREEZE, IK! Get out the leather jacket and a scarf. Our blood gets so thin living where it's hot.

Yes, I'd definitely bring layers (light sweater or light jacket) as once it cools, you might be chilly during the daytime and can certainly wear jeans.

Just joining in to say yup to what everyone else said. You'll certainly want to bring a sweater and maybe a light jacket. I consider the next week gorgeous sunny summer weather, but I'm guessing highs in the low 80s will feel pretty cool to you 'cause seriously, we're like 20 degrees cooler.

I hope you enjoy my fair city! Are you going to do any shopping?

Hello K! Well, I do like my shopping - but probably not. This is a family trip so we'll probably be doing stuff with the kids the entire time. And I really want to see the rose garden, which somehow I have never seen in multiple Portland trips! Plus, well, the boy will obviously be there with me, and he really hates shopping - although ironically if we *do* get anything, it will likely be for him! Lord knows he needs new pants. There's a western gear store he really likes (I think it's downtown?) and we always manage to get him something when we're there.

Ahhh yes, the Portland Outdoor Store. I know it well. It was my introduction to Frye boots. I love that place.

The rose garden is pretty spectacular. You know that there's a play structure right there and you can catch the zoo train and ride it right into the zoo, right? The train is really fun for the kiddos and it is a lovely ride around Washington Park and the zoo. I was just on it on Friday. Never fails to amuse the under 10 set.

Have a great time! I would bet the cool weather is a welcome relief from Austin heat (although I do love me some basking in heat).

Like others have said, make sure to bring a sweater or light jacket- it gets cold at night, even for those of us who live here Also, I always have leggings with me to put on under a dress or skirt for mornings/evenings/AC.
