I met Phyllis Diller years ago. She was opening for Jack Jones. He is known for singing the Love Boat theme song.
I wouldn't have gone to the show except she was dating an entertainment lawyer who had a connection with my husband's firm. The lawyer arranged for everyone at the firm to go to the show, and then up to her suite afterwards.
In the show, she was wearing a fright wig and a loud caftan, I think, and her voice was very raucous, very harsh. Afterwards she was wearing a wig with soft curls, something pastel, and her voice was almost a whisper. It was like two different people. I remember her calling my husband and me cute little preppies. I think it was a compliment.
