Poor Christie! I can't believe your coworker had the nerve!
I will say that this was my first concern about the cropped legging look, because I used to dress my girls up in cute dresses with leggings underneath. I think it is a real risk especially if you choose a legging color other than black (especially anything bright like hot pink), and also depending on the shape of the dress (nothing in the shape of a toddler pinafore, if that gives you a visual). But you say your dress was a work dress in a sheath style, so that has me puzzled: I should think that would be fine, and if I was to wear leggings to work, that's how I would do it too. I guess we need to see a pic!!
Meanwhile, if it eases your mind, this weekend at the reunion I saw tons of women wearing leggings with a dress. These women were around 47 years old, and in a variety of conservative positions, including lawyers. Yes, it was worn as a weekend casual look and not to work, but it proved to me that we 40-somethings and beyond can indeed pull this off just as well as the younger set.
