OT: What does your forum name mean?

In my virtual travels through the vast internet space, I always find forum names and the stories why people chose them very interesting. This forum certainly does not lack colorful ones: chewyspaghetti, mamapicklejuice, puffenstuff, medusa, to name a few. Want to share how you pick yours?

I've mentioned before, my forum name is actually one of my nicknames in real life, but chosen after my favorite book character Ellie Arroway (who's got quirky red brooch ) from Sagan's "Contact".

(This sounds like one of those things someone may have asked before... if so and if someone can point me in the right direction, I'd be happy to read about it.)

Mine means no one can remember Malina, or spell it right or they call me Melinda and Melanie and so Mo is just easier Saves on the carpal tunnel when typing, too

We seem to have one of these threads every few months. I did do a search, but I can't find the old one. My story is long an involved, if you want the FULL story.

The short version is: I had a hand dyed yarn company called Chewyspaghetti, so I started using that at yarn and knitting related websites.

The story behind that name is when my son was about 4 years old, his favorite movie was the old Yul Brennar/Debra Kerr musical The King and I. He watched it over and over, and repeated lines from it. One day I was trying to get him to do something, and he looked at me and said "You are a very difficult choomon" (in the movie, The King tells Ann that she is a 'very difficult WOMAN', but my son pronounced it funny). I paused for a second while I processed it, then looked at my husband and we both busted up laughing. My husband started using the line on me in jest, and eventually shortened it to 'chewy'. I started using choomon online, and when I started a blog to record my knitting projects, I wanted some reference to my username (choomon). I had seen a picture of colorful yarn piled up in a bowl that I wanted to use as a header- and well, yarn *would* be really chewy if you tried to eat it.

Chewyspaghetti: Mystery solved! Your son sounds like quite a character, quoting the King and I at a tender age - and using lines to castigate you! ROFL. I have to admit, though, every time I "see" you I crave a bowl of pasta... :-/

I originally wanted mine to be waxwing, because I LOVE the the bohemian waxwing birds. Birds make me happy and they have the most beautiful songs and colors. But in the end, I accidentally set up my account under my real name and didn't know how to change it back !!!

Becky, then let's add WHY your parents name you that ? Do you know ?

My grandmother was Isabel as was an American pediatrician who used to visit the Azores and treat my sister.....and my mom loved them both.

lol... how cute and fun to know the story behind the names! Mine just comes from my beloved dog Biscuit. I feel like I *am* his mom, since I raised him from just 3 weeks old (bought/rescued him from a animal abuser) and fed him with a eyedropper to start! He only had his eyes opened for a few days when I got him....now he's 9 years old (he still thinks he is a puppy though!)

@Isabel: My parents liked the name Rebecca (don't think it had to do with the name's meaning or anything), and found out after I was named that my mom's aunt's middle name was Rebecca! She thought they named me after her!

That's a great story Becky !! My best friend's father insisted on naming her Joan. She was the first of 4 sisters. Years later her mom found out it was the name of Joan's father first girlfriend !! He spent a lifetime making it up to Joan's mom!!!!

My husband was a big fan of the Tick comic book/cartoon in college, and he used Tick as his user name. So I'm Ticksgirl.

I was almost named Monica or Marina. Lee Harvey Oswald's wife was Marina, so the negative connotation was attached. Monica teamed up with my last name Harmon is way too easy to make into harmonica - or so my Gpa told my parents! So I was named after Melina Mercuri with a spelling change to save me from being nicknamed Mel. Lot of good that did - I'm Mo instead lol.

My name is from Geneva. My dad had never see it spelled (as a girl's name) and mis-pronounced it. He didn't like the proper pronunciation, so they re-spelled it to match his version. (-:

One of our (DH and me!) favorite books is "Lord of the Rings". "Fool of a Took" is a phrase used in there at least once. It refers to one of the hobbits. I know, we're big geeks, right?

Having 4 boys, I long ago declared myself the queen of the house. I actually started off here going by "queenie" but didn't quite like the ring of that... so I changed to Queen Mum a while back.

Pretty simple.
I worked for Ann Taylor when I became a member. I have been "Taylor" for over 2 yrs. now...and it kinda feels more like me than my real name!!

When AJ and I met, she just decided Taylor it was...and that's what she called me...it feels right these days:)

Mine is a conflation of 'thunbergia alata', a rather cheery little yellow flower also called black-eyed Susan. I'd been spending a long time reading gardening encyclopaedias that year to decide what to do with our first ever (tiny) garden, and became rather fond of it from the pictures. I rather like the long latin names of plants too. I was also finding it hard to choose a unique name as needed by some websites, so it was chosen on the spur of the moment and has stuck.

My real name is Lauren. When my younger brother was a toddler he couldn't pronounce my name, so he always called me "L-eeeeee" or "La La". Years later I had never had a nickname (I did, but once again they were made up by my brother and weren't very flattering, always weird things like "sewer butt" or "booger eater") and needed something for a group that was doing a review of a company, but wanted to remain anonymous so we referred to each other by nicknames. "L-eee" became "Elly."

My real name is another story. It is actually pronounced LAR (like lars) N. So, LAR-N. We pronounce it like that because after I was officially named my mother found out that my father had chosen that name because the woman he had dated before my mother (and was engaged to) was a Lauren-- but everyone called her Laurie. This lady cheated on my dad with a police officer in the house they were sharing, and then stole a lot of the furniture and belongings that he had brought into the relationship, so I have no idea what motivated my dad to name me after her. So, anyway, my mother never let anyone call me by a shortened version of my name growing up, and nobody can pronounce it "right" so everyone calls me Lauren or Laurie anyway. It makes a great story for cocktail parties!

Interesting thread! QM, I also refer to myself as the Queen at my house; I have three boys (4 if you count DH). I loved the name Bakerella, but she is pretty popular so I did not want to copy. I came up with Bookarella since I love books and reading!

@ Mo: Monica Harmon! Your grandfather was so astute to predict it morphing into Harmonica. LOL! I love the name Melina - very melodious - and Mercouri was gorgeous. Not too shabby as a namesake.

I originally signed up under my real name, which is April because this seems like a real name kind of place. I realized there was already another April with a posting history so I added Desmo. To get all gearhead, Desmo is short for desmodromic which is a hallmark of Ducati engines. I'm on other sites as Hollywooddesmo

My real name is Kim, but my user name is usually Kimmar. When I signed up for the forum I somehow used Kim (which I don't usually do) but have to sign in as Kimmar! LOL

Kimmar is from my homeschooling days when I was running a homeschool co-operative with about 50 families. The other lady who was my partner was also Kim. Her last name started with a Z and mine with an R, so do distinguish us to the kids we'd refer to reach other as Kim Z or Kim R. The kids all thought those were our real names, Kimsie and Kimmar so the name stuck with me when I joined the internet about the same time...That was quite a while ago as all my kids are in college now...LOL

I worked at a senior's home for 8 years and they all called me Lyn (which is not my real name, which is not on my name tag...) and on the day I quit; they were all shocked to learn that wasnt my name! LOL.

My YLF name is the name of our home...we call it Chez Laurel...but maybe I should change my YLF name to my first name, Sheila. Do we have a "Sheila"? Or, Sheila Marie? I am so new here...how would I find out???
