OT: Halloween

Is anyone here dressing up for Halloween? My friend is throwing a Halloween party next Thursday and I'm going as Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace from Battlestar Galactica (http://www.ebuford.com/photos/.....rbuck.jpg). The costume shouldn't be too difficult as I need a grey cap-sleeve tshirt, a black vest top, khaki pants, dog tags, a toy gun and a mouthy irreverent attitude.

On a side note, it's been years since I've dressed up for Halloween but why are so many of women's Halloween costumes basically lingerie with the addition of a nurse's cap or devil's horn?

Does anyone else have plans for their costume yet?

I'm not dressing up this year. I'll be working on Halloween during the day, and probably just relax at home in the evening. :)

Your costume sounds very creative, I like Starbuck.

I had the same discussion with a friend about "skanky" Halloween attire for women. There was even a New York Times article on it a couple of years ago. Some of the women interviewed said Halloween was the only time where it is acceptable for women to "look like sluts" (or something along those lines).

Pretty depressing.

Anyway, I have been invited to a 90's theme party but I'm not sure if I can make it yet. My friend is going to dress as Melissa Joan Hart in Clarissa Explains It All. I have NO idea who/what to go as.

I'm not dressing up this year, but last year I was Rosie the Riveter.

My boyfriend and I are taking our chihuahuas to a pet costume parade... so we might need to get dressed up too. :) No definite plans yet, though!

We have two costume parties, one on mischief night at a neighbor's house (kinda like a block party - my girls will be babysitting for the neighbors, because it's a no-kids-allowed party) and one on Halloween which is essentially an office party with my DH's colleagues (this party has the most creative costumes ever).

I picked up a cheongsum in the Ladies Market in Hong Kong specifically for this reason! Maybe not so creative, but it'll be easy. DH wanted us to go as H1N1: simple costume with him wearing a tee shirt that says H1, me wearing one that says N1... then we stay together all night long.

I was thinking about this today. Maya - I agree! Halloween is one of the few times I don't enjoy working at a university - LOTS of skanky, tasteless, demeaning outfits. sigh.

I was thinking of dressing as swine flu, wearing pig snout, fake wings (swine "flew"... ha ha!), and using a thermometer while holding a box of tissues) or Cruella DeVille. But I'd have to find a sweet (faux) fur jacket for that.

Haha - H1N1 and swine flew are so funny. I don't think I'll be dressing up but one of my favorites for myself was when I died my hair pink and dressed up as a punk.

The only costume I have anymore is a pirate one, so I'll probably be boring and do that again this year! Oh, we should have a thread where people post their costumes -- would love to see swine flu interpretations! :D

Oh Shiny, you and hubby are mind readers. I was thinking of going as Y2K to the 90's theme Halloween party...except I'm not entirely sure how to dress as Y2K, other than some amorphous blob of impending doom.

So then we started discussing what we would dress as in 2019, when we have a 00's theme party, so I said I would continue the disaster trend and go as H1N1.

Oh I have a Renn Fair costume that I may be able to get into now (made it in college)- I guess I should try it on.
Hubby went as a Magic 8 Ball one year- that was pretty cute.

A fun thread! I hope you post your costumes so that we can see them. They sound fabulous! Dawn – nice one (BSG fans unite).

I don’t have a costume party to go to, but if I did, I’d go as Simon le Bon.
