As you may know (because I've gone on and on about it) I don't like my calves. They are huge. I'd like to know which pair of shoes you think makes them look better.

I'm going to Florida the first week of April for my mother-in-law's 80th birthday and want to look nice. (I LOVE my mother-in-law.)

About the dress - can you have a dress like this shortened? It's polyester/spandex. I have pulled it up and tucked it under at the waist for the purpose of the picture, because the length is a bit long, so that's partly why the waist looks bulky. Also, partly because I AM a bit bulky these days. I may return the dress, as it feels a bit tight and HELLO BREASTS!!!! And also because I feel fat and frumpy. (This was the only color they had left in my size.) There's a very nice black wrap dress at AT I may try as well. (Sorry Angie - I know! Black!) If I don't do a dress, I will do my regular pants thing.

I love this dress and am not sure why you feel frumpy in it. I prefer the darker shoe. My eye sees the darker one as balancing the whole picture. The skin colored shoe cuts your foot off to me. I know it is supposed to be the other way around and the skin colored shoe is supposed to make it look like your leg goes on forever.
This might be a solely personal preference. For myself I like having a substantial pair of shoes otherwise i feel like I will fall over.
I will be interested to hear what others say.

Hmm, I thought I posted an answer here. My vote goes to the snakeskin sandals. You have very nice legs.
If you're not happy with the dress, maybe it's best to keep looking. You might like more color for Florida in April

The dress looks lovely! I don't think you need to shorten it, and the necklace looks great. I vote for snakeskin.

P.S. I just realized that you have it pulled up to the optimal length. Is it much longer? I never tried it, but it def. can be hemmed.

Tara (right?), I also have big calves and ankles (sigh), so I can completely relate. I like the black sandals okay, but I find the snakeskin to be most flattering for you. For the same reason I'd wear them myself - I think it extends the leg better which gives the illusion of being taller and slimmer. Not that I find your calves especially large, but I understand where you are coming from. I find mine particularly ginormous although everybody says they're fine. But I still have the need to dress in such away to detract from them when possible. It makes me feel better.

I should add that I like the dress on you at the length shown. You just seemed to have so many issues with it that it may not be worth shortening if you still don't feel fab in it. Don't settle for something you'll hesitate to wear.

I like the snakeskin shoe and I think the dress is great. I don't see why you can't hem it. You're hilarious-- for the record, you have beautiful legs, don't look at all frumpy, and nothing stands out in any way but flattering.

Tarzy, honestly, you look beautiful in the picture. I don't see "big calves" so much as "small ankles", the drape of the fabric is really flattering to your waist, and like the length that the dress hits you at now (though I'll bet it wouldn't be too hard to shorten.)

I also vote for the snakeskin because it picks up the sheen of the pearls and creates a longer leg line.

Joy has a point that if you feel uncomfortable with the dress, don't buy it - but if you're just feeling uncertain about how you look in the dress, I think you aren't giving your body/assets enough credit.

I also vote for snakeskin although it seems to me like the dress isn't even worth shortening because you don't seem to be happy with how you look in it. Maybe you'd be more comfortable in a tailored sheath dress which just skims over everything but doesn't really wrap and cinch around everything.

The snakeskin are so much more flattering to me- it's making me rethink my dark sandals! You have wonderful, delicate ankles.

And, like the others have said, the dress looks fine, but if you're not feeling pretty in it, please return it. That's how I got a whole wardrobe of almost-sorta-ok clothes, by talking myself into purchases that were just ok. Let's aim for fab!

I think the dress is absolutely gorgeous on you, and it's very nice to see you in something other than black. You don't look frumpy at all. For shoes, I also prefer the snakeskin. The vamp is lower so it extends your leg. And snakeskin is just so.... awesome.... it brings the whole ensemble up a huge stylish notch for me!

Your calves do not look wide to me at all, not in this picture. Is it more of a side-view thing? I would say that *in general* if you have very muscular calves (which I cannot tell from a front view), a higher heel tends to look best, and I would definetly steer clear of kitten heels.

I vote that you keep this dress and get it hemmed. You look so cozy and polished in it, and the chocolate brown is very flattering to your skin tone and hair color. LOVE it!

Haven't read other replies but wanted to add my 2 pence worth- the dress looks great def not frumpy i would go with the snakeskin sandal, being pale it elongates your leg. Your bust looks great in the dress def a positive.
Though i agree with Joy if you don't feel comfortable you won't be happy at the event.

Also - maybe the color is what makes you feel frumpy (hint!). Maybe a brighter more saturated color, like dark blue, wine, or purple will make you feel better? Though, I must say, brown definitely looks great on you as well. Please don't buy a black dress! It's Florida, it is going to be warm there!

Oh my goodness, Tara, I don't know what you see, but I see you looking absolutely fab in that dress. It's super flattering and you look GREAT. Frumpy?? No way.
I like both shoes with a preference towards the snake skin.

I agree with all, beautiful legs and I think the dress is incredibly flattering on you!

I feel that I have larger calves and ankles as well, so speaking from experience, I prefer the snakeskin shoe. I think it's because the black shoe draws the eye down because it's chunkier and dark. If you are self-conscious of your legs you want to dray the eye up! The snakeskin shoe is daintier and allows the eye to focus up on your beautifu hair and figure!

I don't see any frump here. I think you could have the dress shortened, if it makes you feel more comfortable. A good tailor can advise. If you feel self conscious about your calves, the light color shoes are the way to go as they create more of a long, unbroken visual line down the leg. This dress style truly is very flattering on you. I can't quite tell what color the dress is from the photo, and, are you wearing a cami? If you are wearing a cami, perhaps add one that has a touch of lace or other feminine embellishment. It will also keep the visual focus at a higher point. You really look great. And, as for "the girls," I'm sure they can be a burden at times, but there are many days I wouldn't mind having a little "va-va-voom" happening, but it's just not there!

I have always felt the same as San - that I wanted a shoe that would "anchor" me. I've always felt that a lighter shoe made me look like I was walking on two ice cream cones that tapered away. But apparently that's not what everyone else sees. So interesting!

I'm still undecided about the dress, though. I need to think about it.

I forgot to comment on the length. It looked great where you had it. As long as you don’t wear black shoes, you absolutely have the go ahead on a black dress! The new red specs help with the black rut thing.

Aah Tara, 'fat and frumpy' is the last thing that comes to mind (I think you were in 'that place' I was describing in the new bomber thread;-)

I LOVE the brown colour on you, the length is perfect and you look elegant and feminine. I vote for the snakeskin shoes too.
(and even if you decide not to keep this one, do get yourself another wrap dress!!)
