On repeating jackets

DH, DD and I were in a heated discussion this morning about wearing a jacket two days in a row. DD just got an adorable pleather biker style jacket and since she is on Team Wear, ripped the tags off immediately to wear the next day to school. She got many compliments from classmates and was ready to wear it again today. DH told her not to wear the same jacket two days in a row while I thought it was fine and told her just wear a different jacket tomorrow. Did I miss a memo somewhere along the line? It's black and very basic and it's a jacket, not a shirt. Thoughts?

Oh my gosh, Kelly! You have tapped into my psyche and raised an issue I have been grappling with my own self!!

I think if it's outerwear, it's more than okay to wear it as often as you like.

If it's more of a non-outerwear "completer piece" like a blazer, then I would try to space it out more. Although as you say, a black or navy jacket is very basic an it should be okay to repeat, right? But I can't seem to bring myself to do it.

Gosh! I don't know why she shouldn't wear it again. It's not like it needs to go into the laundry first- it's a jacket.!

(Of course this is coming from the person who at sleepover camp when I was 8 years old wore my favorite shirt every day for the entire week! Mortifying in retrospect...)

I will wear a plain jacket several days in a row. In fact, I keep one in the office to throw on if AC gets me, so it may be partially worn all week!

But on another note, I let my kids (teens) wear whatever they choose to school, mulitple days in a row, as long as they meet the dress code! They definitely repeat shoes, jeans and jackets. They'll also fall in love with a piece and wear it to death, and I think that's great!

I would wear it again the next day without a thought. I only change up the pieces that are directly on my skin, like shirts, cardigans, underwear and hosiery. But I wouldn't worry about wearing a pair of jeans, a skirt or a jacket two days in a row.

Glad this question speaks to you, MaryK! I felt kind of foolish asking but I knew YLF might be able to help this girl out!

DH rarely voices an opinion so I was kind of surprised (I've taught him not to express an opinion unless asked and particularly, not to question clothing choices when we are on our way out the door to school.) I had to leave early this morning so am unsure how the fashion question was resolved--of course, I'm dying to know but will refrain from texting either party to find out....maybe.

The classrooms are either hot or cold so I think she wears it most of the day, unzipped. I hesitate to call it a "completer" piece--more like a jacket. She has been known to wear the same hoodie two or more days in a row--as do many kids at her school. I figured the same rule applied. Hmmm, maybe she needs another jacket in rotation.

@Parsley: Definitely not something that needs to be laundered right away. Good point!
@Isis: Another good point! DH will comment if something is inappropriate but it hasn't happened yet. DD is very "rule oriented" and not one to test the dress code. She has been taught to repeat her jeans since I only wash denim on weekends.
@Astrid: Sounds like we are on the same wavelength!

I would wear a jacket 2 days in a row - it's just a piece to finish off the outfit. You'd wear the same shoes 2 days in a row, wouldn't you? I see them the same way.

I tend not to, but I run so cold that my jackets function as shirts to me. I wear them all day, and they are usually fairly distinctive.

For your DD, it doesn't sound like her jacket functions as a shirt, and it also sounds like more of a basic. I don't see a problem at all.

Maybe DH *sees* it as more distinctive than you and DD do?

Wow. If there is a "do not repeat" rule for jackets, I am in DEEP trouble!

You know that tweed jacket I got at the consignment store a little over a week ago? I have worn it at least 5 or 6 times since then. And it's not even a plain.

Granted, I have a small wardrobe and don't have many choices. But I would probably wear it anyway. It is perfect for the weather we have been having, perfect for what I have been doing, and I see no reason to mess with perfection!

If it were a shirt, that would be a different matter. But a jacket? I see no reason.

Having said that, now I am genuinely curious about your husband's thought process. I wonder what makes him think it's a poor idea to wear it two days in a row?

Sorry, I'm baffled. First, she's a kid, right? Let her wear it until it falls apart. It can be her signature item. That's not just very French, it's great economy! Why does she need another if this one is her fave? I personally wish I had that kind of adoring willpower and only needed one jacket!

@Rae: yes, it's more distinctive, that's for sure. I hope to get a picture of her in it later so you can all see : ) She's just starting to test the fashion waters--wading slightly outside the comfort zone. It's fun to watch! DH probably sees it more as a "statement" piece--not a jacket.
@suzanne: Exactly. I want her to have fun.
@Mo: Absolutely. I'm on day 3 of jeans and booties (hangs head in shame.)
@Suz: That makes two of us. Baffled is how I felt this morning but he was looking at me like I had lost my mind.
@IK: Isn't that the truth! I wish I had a jacket that I loved to death too! I think this is going to be her "workhorse" and signature jacket!

Great point, IK. My DS had this brown jacket he got in Paris during his semester abroad and he wore it until it literally fell apart. And then we took it to the tailor and had patches put on the (holey) elbows, and the (frayed) cuffs taken up just a tad, and he wore it until it fell apart again! LOL

I wear jackets and coats multiple days in a row all the time. I am really anal about never repeating outfits or distinctive clothing items within like a week or so (I'm not considering cleanliness here, since obviously I wouldn't rewear underwear or socks or things like that), but for some reason my weird brain does not apply this rule to jackets. Maybe because I consider them outerwear even if they are indoor jackets so they are not something that you're wearing continuously? I don't know ... like I said, my brain is weird.

Great question! For me, I try to mix up my jackets so that I rarely wear the same one 2x within a week (which gets hard sometimes). But for your daughter?! I'd say she could wear the same jacket every day without thinking twice!

My son is little but he wears the same hoodie to school every day for a week - then I wash it. He takes it off inside and it's really more like outerwear.

When I was in school I remember wearing the same jacket for days in a row. I particularly remember one Members Only jacket that I saved up for and bought with my own money. I don't think I took it off for a week!

So yes, I vote it is fine!

As a mother of girls let her wear it. It is apporiate. It is not questionable in modesty ir taste. IMHO let her wear it as often as she wants because something else may come up that you have to put your foot down on.

Exactly what Astrid said. Actually, I am sorry but I have strong feelings about this. I feel it is important to be clean and wear clean clothing, but I see no value in not repeating items. I think the whole idea that one shouldn't be seen in the same thing over and over is baloney.

Kelly, what astounds me and makes me laugh about this discussion is...did I read it right...you have DH "trained" not to comment on DD's style choices? And...that he was silly enough to do so anyway?

In my book clothes are one of the few things kids get to have absolute control over.

Our very independent-minded 2yo DD absolutely insists on choosing her own clothes - these days the theme is to use the same color for all items in her outfit (usually purple) and often times she insists on the same clothes multiple days in a row. It's really quite amusing. But hey, if it's not hurting her, why pick this as a battle to fight?!

I'm with Debbie. Modest, clean, tidy...nothing to complain about.

I'm wondering if perhaps dh's thinking might be along the lines of good parenting and providing an appropriate wardrobe for his child. Male thinking is different...

My 13 year old DD wears her same jacket days in a row and then I wash it. It's just a fuzzy hoodie, but I'd say the same, at least, would follow for a pleather jacket. She tends to fall in love with a particular jacket and wear it to death and then be sick of it for a while and switch to another. I'd say it's fine...me, I tend to like to wear different coats, but don't worry about it if I end up wearing the same one several days in a row.

@Kate: I think that's why I was so surprised that DH commented--because he rarely does anymore. In the past, DH would comment on outfits not matching or too busy or the wrong shoes as we were walking out the door and I would later chide him because at that point, it didn't matter what they were wearing because it was too late to change. I explained to him that I didn't want them starting the day off feeling self conscious and to refrain from commenting.
@Scarlet: You have a very good point. I'm finding that I am much more likely to repeat faves these days. It takes more effort and a big closet not to!

@Una: That's what I used to do too. I had a cognac MO jacket that I wore ALL the time.--only back then, I called it tan.

ummm, my boys leave the house every single day in the same hoodie and the world hasn't stopped spinning.
If she has committed a major fashion faux pax then her peers will certainly make sure she gets the memo.

As an adult, I am compelled to follow the group logic. There is nothing wrong with wearing the same jacket or anything else that isn't against skin/dirty/smelly two days in a row.

On the other hand, as a tween and teen I can remember being teased for doing things. I had two or three pairs of the same jeans (and no other styles/other things to wear) and only a couple sweatshirts or jackets and one coat. I never wore "dirty" clothing to school, but it often looked as though I was wearing the same clothes as the day before (with a t-shirt change) or some other day of the week. We didn't have alot of money, but most of the other people that went to the same school I did were wealthy. I got teased for being dirty, smelly, homeless-- asked if I only had two sets of clothes, ect.

I thought that might be the hubbies motivation-- but if he doesn't care that she goes to school in the same sweatshirt often, why should be care about the jacket?

good question.... I too struggle with this. I try not to wear the same jean jacket 2 days in a row.... that's why I have 2 different ones... lol

It's a jacket (outerwear) you SHOULD be able to wear it everyday, but I just cannot

I wear my outer wear jackets again and again daily. I wear my indoor blazers once a week, twice at the most if I don't see the same people for each wearing.

Kelly, interesting that your DH brought this up....you should counter by asking him if he would like to purchase four other jackets for your daughter to rotate the other school days left in the week....;D

Kids can get away with wearing the same things over and over. They all fall in love with one thing or another. As long as you can pry it away for a washing/cleaning, no one thinks twice.

Weren't these the rules:

1 coat
1 sweater/hoodie for the whole school year that you wear every day
Bottoms (jeans, pants, skirts) can be worn more than once a week
Tops change every day
Two pairs of every day shoes

gym shorts + tees + shoes

1 "dress up" outfit

...and if you had more than this, you were a rich kid and were gonna get beat up...
