Non-leather gloves predicament

As I see it, I have three choices with gloves:

-Give in and buy leather, which I won't be doing any time soon.
-Buy knit gloves and replace them every year.
-Wear gear-like ski gloves that I can't even move my fingers in.

Is there another option that I am not aware of? My knit gloves pill and get dirty so quickly, and for some reason they always end up with a hole in the same place, at the tip of my thumb.

I had a pair of sleek nylon gloves from Target but they weren't all that warm. I would really like a similar pair with a warm lining of some kind, but I don't know if such a thing exists? For the time being, I'm putting aesthetics on the back burner. I'll be fine with a pair of plain black gloves.

Any ideas...?

If you don't care about aesthetics, try those inexpensive knit gloves from the drugstore- one size fits all. I usually live in these all winter long, because my fingers are short but not narrow, so finding gloves that fit are quite the challenge. Though I have had some great luck this year, usually I have to go hunting in the vintage department for a pair - people had smaller hands way back when!

The drugstore "stretchy" gloves don't really pill. I am more apt to lose them than have them wear out. They are so cheap (like a $1) you can replace every year. I stick to white and black. I also think they are warmer than leather gloves. But, not so great when they get wet.

My boyfriend wears fleece gloves when he runs. I think they might be glove liners, actually. (I think they're by Smartwool, aka creators of truly warm socks). Maybe that would work?

I love SmartWool! (I've got on some red, snowflake-patterned socks on now.) I'd look into those, Maya, or maybe the glove liners that my Mum loves by Icebreaker (New Zealand Merino wool company).

Really, when the temperature drops, I find all gloves too cold. My fingers need to huddle together for warmth, so I always end up wearing mittens or bring my fingers into the palm part of the glove when it's really cold out. (Which makes the fingers flop around creepily, lol.)

I have some cute wool gloves as well. They're warmer than my leather ones!

I picked up some thick fleece gloves yesterday and they have served me well through the snowstorm here today. I got them from TJMaxx and I threw away the tags, so don't remember what brand they are.

I second Shiny. I wear leather gloves occasionally, but mostly use cheap gloves whenever there is a risk of losing them. I get mine at H&M. Fleece gloves are OK, and Gap and ON usually have a variety, but I wouldn't say they are necessarily warmer. I also remember seeing some suede imitation ones at H&M, but no idea how long they would last.

Maya, Checked my gloves and they have 40 gm Thinsulate in them. I have tried fleece gloves from H&M before and they are fine, just not particularly warm.

Wow. People's body temperatures really, really vary! There is no way I could wear unlined simple wool gloves in temperatures below freezing. I find them too porous and not warm at all. My wool or leather gloves need to be lined with some sort of insulation to prevent extremely sore cold hands. Sometimes I wish that my body ran a little warmer :0(

My hands are NEVER warm in winter. I assure you nothing will keep them warm. But, I'd like to do the best I can. I usually wear gloves and stuff my hands in my pockets. Ele, I also do the same thing (balling my hands up inside my gloves/mittens).

I used to wear mittens but they are annoying to use. Every time I need to grab something out of my pocket or bag, I have to take them out. I had a pair of great convertible mittens with a lining, but I can't find the now Last year I got another pair of convertible mittens to replace them, but they were unlined and are filthy as can be.

Maya, I don't purchase leather either. A few years ago, I found a pair of insulated velvet gloves that I love. They have a sleek, non-clunky look, but they are warm. I have actually purchased pairs for my mother and sister-in-law since, because I liked them so much, and they wear them all the time. The brand is Cejon, and they have 40 gram insulation. I have some thinsulate gloves which aren't as thick as ski gloves but thicker than normal gloves which are super warm for playground duty. I've also got some wristies made from polartec which i wear under normal gloves you'll need to size up on the gloves to allow for the extra layer. I think someone mentioned silk gloves as a layer under regular gloves, i haven't tried this but have seen them sold on 'gear' sites for cyclists and walkers x
