New purchases - YouLookFab Forum

Hello! I've been hitting the sales the past few weeks trying to stock up while it seems everything is on sale. Here they are mixed in with my wardrobe. Your opinions and suggestions are always welcome!!!

1) Grey cowl neck sweater. I tried it with jeans but I don't think it's long enough:

I think it looks better with a skirt:

Any suggestions for accessories? In both pictures I am wearing a necklace inside the "cowl" (it is hidden because DH sits on the couch to take my morning portrait ).

2) I have been coveting a ruffly blouse for a while now and was happy to find this on clearance. It is great for layering under V-neck sweaters but how does it look on its own? I've paired it with a skinny belt - a look I would never have tried pre-YLF.

3) Another look I would have never tried pre-YLF: skinnies tucked into boots. Because of their universal appeal, I gave the Express Mias a try and also got a new pair of boots:

I wore them with a longer sweater coat to work and got a 'you are way to dressed up for lab' comment from my sweatpants-wearing coworker.

4) Keep or return - I have a big crush on this J Crew tunic - is it flattering?

I think everything is adorable (including the J Crew tunic) except the first top. It does seem to end at an awkward neither-here-nor-there spot on your body. When I first saw it I thought "Oh cute!" but then I looked at everything else you're wearing and it began to pale in comparison. The ruffly shirt looks great with a belt. The boots and skinnies look great too. Your coworker is just jealous That's my theory on anyone who drops the "too dressed up" line.

#2 and #3 look AMAZING on you. Fantastic! I think #1 doesn't do you any justice, especially since you look so great in the next two outfits. #4 is not my favorite, maybe because you raised the bar so high with #2 and #3. However - you have great legs so it certainly looks good.

I've decided the next time someone says "You look so dressed up" I am going to say "OH! Thank you!" in a very excited voice, as if they have just told me I won the lottery. I think it's a great compliment!

The ruffled shirt, skinny jeans with boots and j.crew tunic are all fantastic -- great finds that look good on you. I also feel ambivalent about the grey cowl neck sweater -- it's a cute top but doesn't seem to looks as good as the other pieces. Congratulations on the "dressed up" comment! I think that's a rite of passage for YLFers.

Hi Dee,

I don't care for the grey cowl neck sweater. It's too shlumpy...at first I thought it was the camera angle, but then after looking at the other photos at the same angle, I realized it couldn't be that! I don't know why it's not working, but it makes you look hippy, where none of the other outfits do.

I love this ruffled blouse on you--it's beautiful. And you have smokin' legs, so wear those skinnies and dresses with your head held high! I think I'd like to see a different top under the JC tunic--maybe something a little more substantial.

I love love love the ruffled blouse and I think you look amazing in the jeans/boots outfit. I also really like the JCrew tunic - looks very sassy. I'm not wild about the cowl neck, maybe the color isn't right? Great finds!

WOW! You look fabulous in skinnies and boots! KILLER. Well done dee.

Return the grey baby doll if you can. It’s cut too short under the bust and hits you at an unflattering place. This is not a good shape for you. You need to define your torso, like you did with the pants and ruffle blouse ensemble. You look amazing in that outfit too!

Nice work Dee!!! Here are my thoughts on each:

1) To me this top is pretty good but I don't like the way the sleeves are so lose. I think it should either be loose body or loose sleeves, not both. The neckline is lovely though.

2) Lovely! Looks great with the skinny belt too!!

3) Again - lovely!!! A scarf or accessories would be the icing on the cake of this outfit!

4) I like the tunic. What I'm not sure about is how it goes with black tights - it seems too stark against the lighter grey and white you're wearing up to. How about trying it with your brown boots? Maybe that's reduce the amount of black on show.

Dee, you look incredible in the skinnies tucked into boots and in that ruffle blouse.

I also vote to return the first grey sweater, something is off about it.

I think I will be the odd man out with my opinions, but here it goes:

1) I like this gray top, I think you can make it work with a longer layer underneath if you want to wear it with jeans. I can also see this with a big flower brooch pinned to the side of the collar.

2) The ruffle shirt is lovely, but are you sure it is the right size for you? I would try going one size down and see how it looks. I don't think this does justice to your frame.

4) Even though this is not the right jumper for you, I would encourage you to wear more skirts. You have shapely legs, flaunt them off!

1) I don'think it works. Not form fitting enough to wear with the skirt, and not long enough for jeans (as you suspected). A top like that could work if it was as long as the sweater coat in 3)

2) Wonderful - looks great

3) Overall looks good, especially with sweater coat. Boots are lovely. But, and perhaps it's just me, there seemed to be a big of a bump in the sweater above the jeans. How high rise are the jeans (probably everyone else knows this info, but I am not familiar with US brands)?

4) This was cute but something seemed a little off - maybe it would work with Boots, or different tights, as per suggestions above

Thank you all so much for your comments and suggestions! Looking at the pictures I would agree that the grey sweater is just the wrong shape so I will pass it on. I felt like a million bucks in my skinnies and boots so I'm glad that you all liked them too!

Tarzy, I did give my co-worker a big fat 'thank you' for her 'compliment'. Life is too short for sweatpants!!! Anne, the jeans are 'higher rise' but I don't have the measurement. I didn't think I had a muffin top in them... hopefully it's just the way I'm standing. Bellacville, the ruffle shirt is probably slightly too big but it's cotton and I know it will shrink in the wash.

I think I will keep the tunic - I know it will get a lot of wear with boots and I am going to try it with different tops as Nicole suggested.
