So I hope these pictures actually work...

I went to the mall today and did some good shopping at the limited and ann taylor loft for some fall casual basics. I am trying to change over into smart casual for grad school and have just finished a massive closet revamp. I started by getting a few new pairs of jeans and a denim skirt (will post pictures soon) and now I am trying to get down the knits and layering tops instead of t-shirts ( hard switch for me!!!).

These pics show my new Gap dark straight leg jeans, ATL magenta sweater/knit, Limited sweater, and silver Privo flats. I am trying to pinpoint what works well on my body before I start accessorizing, so sorry if these outfits are not that daring or exciting yet. The only question I have is if the ATL sweater looks too small. I usually wear a small, but ATL seems to be running a little big so I went with the XS. Opinions on that would be appreciated.

What do we think so far? Also any suggestions for more smart casual items that I should be on the look out for this fall would be great!

Hi Becs, I like your purchases. That color of ATL sweater is very nice on you, and I think that the size is right. The jeans and shoes are cute as well. I am not a big fan of the other sweater, but I can not pinpoint exactly what it is about it that's bothering me. Great beginning! You can get camis in cute colors to layer the V-neck sweater over.

I think the pink ATL sweater is kind of short. It might work better with a skirt. Love the jeans and shoes though. As for the other sweater, I don't care for the zigzag, striped bodice. But that's just a personal taste. It seems to fit you well.

Would the pink ATL sweater work better with a longer tank or cami underneath?

The ATL sweater is a good basic piece but I'd rather wear it under a jacket or other outerwear. I'm not sure if a longer cami underneath would work though, maybe you can try and post a picture for us to see?

The tops fit well. The fushia top is very basic. A good layering item, but a little short for pants. (Good for skirts). The zig zag top makes you look top heavy somehow. I think you can do better with that one.

Angie...now that you've seen my top half, what type of tops would you recommend that would look best on my body? I think I will return the zig zig sweater, but do you think I should keep the fushia one?

Also, I feel like I am sometimes picking the wrong things for my top half, even though in the store I feel like they look good (example, the zig zag sweater). Do you think this is common, or is it that I just haven't found the formula for what looks good on me yet?
