I bought InStyle magazine yesterday - something I not do often (actually it is the 3rd fashion magazine I bought in my life!)
Anyway, they have an article on new layering which left me puzzled. I try to keep an open mind and do not reject something right away if it is new and unusual for me but this just did not do it for me. Maybe because I prefer cleaner lines and this looks too busy and complex...
The only style I am going to try so far is #1 - long sleeves under short sleeves. Actually I already did it last winter
#2 was puzzling: do not layer dress over jeans because it is boho look...do they mean bootcut jeans - because dresses over skinnies or leans do not spell boho to me. That picture with short skirt and leggings reminded me how we wore skirts in winter at school...
#3 and 5 sound OK from the description by I do not like how it looks in the pictures. Can it be that the problem is that these particular examples are not resonating with me? #3 seems to bulky for my taste and in #5 proportions seem off somehow...
What do you all think? Do my eye need more adjustment?

#4 just does not speak to me at all...

Long over long is really unappealing to me

I like some layering as long a it is in solids..once patterns get thrown into the mix it looks too busy and unfocused to me.
The dress over the full legged bell bottoms us surly boho ,I agree with you a dress over skinny looks great to my eye IF the colors are solids/subtle prints !
I am with you I think we like a sleeker and more streamlined silhouette and an uncomplicated/unfussy look!

Every few years they have one of these articles--- for very thin freezing people in NY that are allergic to coats.

Yeah, I agree, the outfits in this article just look sloppy. The only one that sort of works for me is the sweater coat over dress. You ladies do a much better job of layering and I am trying to learn from the pros!

Most of these looks are just too much "volume on top of volume" for my taste. The only outfit I liked as is was the dress over long-sleeved tee. I think that the jacket-over-vest or sweater-over-button down & skirt look could work if styled differently.

Exactly, Kari! I begin to think it is more implementation that the theory which turns me off here - although long over long just does not do it for me!
I like your vest and jacket combo, very stylish. I began to envision my brown leather blazer layered over with my long fur vest...

I am also not a fan of the "long over long" layering shown here, but the rest has fun potential!

Yeah, my issue came in the mail a few days ago, and I was not impressed with this article. I agree that long sleeve under short sleeve could work, but the "Cropped over Long" examples would be especially terrible on me, as there is too much bulkiness over the belly area.

Of course, they are trying to change up the 'rules' again!

I'm slow to adopt these new ways when they seem contrived. . .

#1 seems natural and I've seen it done well around here.
#2 on left looks like it's best for the tall and slender, on right looks very youthful.
#3 I've noticed this often on Atlantc-Pacific and she's cute in whatever she layers, albeit over-the-top

Seems different for the sake of being different. I'm more attracted to trends that recall a certain lifestyle or story - biker looks, Americana, ballerina, futuristic space crusader. I'm just not getting the point of changing up the proportions in these ways.

I'm terrible at layering and these looks are too complicated for me. The proportions have to be just right on most of them to look good. #1 is the only one I think I could figure out how to wear.

Sveta, I love layering! So here's my take on these. Short sleeve over long sleeve, yes I like this. My version of this would be to wear say an elbow length cardigan over a long sleeve tshirt (contasting colours) or button down. I wear dresses over pants quite a lot. My office version of this is a tailored pant with a straight skirted wrap dress. The picture of the mini with the jumper and the leggings terrifies me! Long over long can work on a model! My sister is 6"1 and she can wear long layers with elegance... at 5"1 I cannot... I would look like I was dressing up in my mummy's clothes:). And re cropped over long, I do a casual / weekend version of this with skinny jeans, long knee length fitted tshirt dress and cropped (my version of cropped is just touching below my tummy)/draped top with what I think you call dolman sleeves. Its not a look that I would chose for the office, but it's a nice change for the weekend and is comfy.

Long over long...if I did it, I'd look as if I were wearing the sheet and duvet.

But on a 6 foot model, sure.

The others? I can imagine them looking great, but not with the fabrics, patterns, colours, and specific shapes illustrated here.

Hmm, this is an interesting spread! The ideas are OK but some of their examples feel like they're not refined enough to work for everyone. I do #1 on occasion, but usually fold the longer sleeve over for some contrast (I also do this with long sleeves+jacket with sleeves pushed up). I appreciate #2 on others, but only tried it myself a couple times (I don't have dresses I can wear this way); Sveta, I can see you wearing this one quite well actually! #3 can totally work, Kari's example is just what I was thinking of (slim vest under slim jacket); the vest over the jacket I'm not too sure about. #4 is the only one I don't really like. #5 seems fun, and we've seen some of this around YLF already: cropped jacket+tunic+skinnies

I wore the 1st one yesterday, black and white long sleeved t with my cropped sleeve blue jacket over.
I guess #2 is kinda like my tunic over skinnies outfits? though I dislike the dress over wide trousers though
#3 ooo I could wear my faux fur vest over my denim jacket????
#4 looks like she has on a nightie and dressing gown. hehehe
#5 I like the description but like you Sveta I'm not *feeling* the pictures x

As a person who struggles with weight in my midsection I do not want to add bulk with layers and many of these would do just that. I am not a fan of long over long or anything over real pants (except tunic over leggings or skinnies) I would do #1 or #5 (my inspiration for the search for a drapey white tunic button down since I have a semi cropped cashmere tshirt to put over it.)

Some of these look pretty far fetched, like - oops, the blouse that goes with these pants is not clean - shall I just throw on this unrelated print chiffon dress instead? The dress over pants look has never been for me - I know one of the gals on the British how to dress/makeover show was always touting that look.

The other combinations in the picture might be more workable, if the pieces were maybe trimmer, more classic styles or cuts. The long flowy gauzy skirts and loose sweaters are more boho? romatic? than I would feel comfortable wearing, but if those are the type of garment someone likes, they might like layering them this way.

So IMO, not too inspiring at this time.

i'm into all the concepts - but llike usual, i 'm not really feeling In Styles' styling. the dress over the trousers really falls flat to me.

i've been into vests over jackets since last winter - i like the 'gear' feel, but mostly i can stay warm without arm/shoulder constriction or bulk.

Here's the one that's confusing me. In the "jacket over vest" version, they advise, "Choose a slim-fitting piece for your bottom half to offset the thicker items up above." Sounds right. But what do they show? It appears to be a full, pleated, midi-length sweater skirt.

Does a less slim-fitting garment even exist?
