Need help finding a new coat

I have decided that I'd like a new wool coat this australian winter
I have shown a picture of what my current coat looks like. I quite like it - but want to do better. It is a little shabby and not that fitted - I think I wore it up to 6 months pregnant.
What I am looking for is ideas for what style would be flattering. I already have decided on
-a false plain
-fitted at the waist but not belted
But would love to hear more input - specially on colour
Also, for the Australians on the forum, I'd really t any concrete suggestions from australian shops. I don't want to spend too much - (I suppose not more than $100)

Hmm, I may not be much help - I just blew all my pocket money for the month on this coat, which I love. Now I can't wait for it to get colder.

Witchery also have some really nice coats this year, but more expensive again than Portmans. I am noticing that the shops are having heaps of sales and special offers at the moment, so you may well come in on budget if you just stalk something you like for long enough.

How about a red coat? I know it's not a false plain, but you'd look smashing. Keep the length fairly long so that it's versatile for over dresses and skirts too.

Ooh Anne, that red coat is absolutely stunning. Are you *sure* you can't spring for the extra $49? I'd happily live off of canned beans for a week for that coat...although I suppose I don't have kids so easy for me to say that...

Red is a good ideia!
The one you linked from Ezibuy is just perfect! Go for it! It's a piece that will last for years and worth the investment!

Love also those deep caramel colors that are so versatile..

Bit worried because one of the reviews said it wasn't as fitted in the waist as in the picture (which is a big part of the appeal) and another said were a 10 (aus) and the and 36 fitted perfectly. However I am an 8 and there are no smaller sizsues.
So I am not comitted and still would love to hear other suggestions! I have Myer and westfield gift cards

Always buy a coat slightly larger than your regular size (for layering when needed). I bought a navy coat similar to the red last year in size 10 when I usually wore a 6 or 8 (Canadian sizing, now the 10 is a little tight on me b/c I am bigger). Also, I would try to come up with the extra $49, before the size 10 disappears too. You want a fitted look in the waist but you do want more room too (again for layering when needed). Having a tight waist on a coat isn't as great as having a little room. It's the look you are after. Granted, Aussies don't need to layer like Canadians do, but the Aussies I know do still layer somewhat.

Thanks Rosee and Shabbychick. A false plain looks like it is plain from a distance but actually has a pattern - shows the dirt less. Angie is quite into them!

Hi Rosee,
I guess I only need it to be fitted enough for say a poloneck knit underneath. I have a warm puffer for really cold days and casual situations. And my last one, as I said was loose enough to fit 6 months of a second pregnancy in, buttoned up!

I just ordered the red coat. It is on delayed delivery (and I got free delivery too) so I hopefully will have time to check out alternatives before it comes/ needs to be returned.

I appreciate the links but the style of those coats isn't exactly what I am after - I am keen on having waist definition built in to the structure of the coat.

Wish I could get to some actual shops some time soon!
