Hi everyone! I wanted to share a sketch of a ring I'm having made, and ask for your opinion on something...

When I went home earlier this month for my Granny's funeral, my other Grandma gave my sister and I each a couple pieces of her jewelry as part of a late Christmas gift. My gift was a pair of peridot earrings and a pendant set with a small pear-shaped emerald and a teeny diamond. While I love these stones (so much green!), the settings of the pieces were a bit outdated and not to my taste (and that's putting it politely), so before I came home my Mum, sister and I went to my Mum's jeweler to talk about having some of the pieces re-set.

I just got a sketch via email of what my new, very modern, emerald and diamond ring will look like: an east-west set, bezel-wrapped emerald on a 3mm gold sheet band. The diamond will also be bezel set, and this is where my question comes in. When we were talking about it, I had imagined that the diamond would be set in yellow gold as everything else, but they've proposed white for it. Whether that's to make it look bigger or brighter, or just to add some mixed-metal interest, I'm not sure. I think I like the idea, but I'm still wrapping my head around it.

I love peridot. I have a ring with that stone too. If you like dainty jewelry, I think that this is very pretty. The best part about the design for me is actually the mixing of the metals! If you'd prefer something more chunky - start again.

I wonder if peridot on the same ring with the emerald would be pretty. To me mixing the 2 greens would be beautiful.

I am no expert, but I LOVE green stones too and have had a client of mine who travels to Thailand every year,she always askes me what stones do I want her to bring back(I pay of course) I ALWAYS say Peridot and Green Sapphires:)

I do love the design, very dainty yet modern at the same time. It was hard to see from the design the exact effect that the white gold would have.

I wonder if you could go to somewhere like Hatton Cross and see if there are any rings with a similar mix to see how it looks?

Angie, the sketch makes it look a little daintier than it actually is, I think. When I was playing around at the jewelers, it seemed as though both stones together, in bezels, will pretty much cover the top of my finger, so you'd just see a hint of band at the side, not all that excess that the sketch shows. The band itself is dainty and flat because I can't stand thick things between my fingers.

I thought about using the peridots (which are small ovals) in the ring, San. But both together wouldn't fit (they are slightly smaller than the emerald) and using just one leaves me with a spare stone! I *love* the yellow-green colour of peridot so I decided to have simple bezel-wrapped studs made out of them, which I'll probably get a lot of wear out of.

I'm wondering how everyone feels about the sideways setting of the stone? I thought it made it seem less obvious, sleeker and more of an "everyday" ring, because pears set up-and-down can be a bit "in your face" or very formal. But I'm getting a lot of mixed reactions (from my boyfriend, friends, etc.) so now I'm unsure!

After sleeping on it, I do like the mixing of the metals, though.

I was a bit unsure about the stone set sideways but on reflection i think it makes for a unique edgy ring x

I love it! The sideways stone is really cool and I love the mixing of metals (although I could never do it since I'm allergic to gold).

LOVE it sideways. Pear-shapes can be a little old-fashioned in the wrong context and the sideways setting really perks it up and makes you see the shape as the shape.

While I am no expert, I think the stone set sideways adds an element of visual interest without being too "in your face" as you mentioned. I give the design a thumbs up!

Ele, I thought I would post a pic of one of my ring which may help you visualise the ring finished. My favourite thing about the ring (and yours), which is over a decade old, is how beautifully it stacks.

Will the setting around the diamond be white gold or rhodium? Rhodium settings are often used to enhance diamonds and is commonly used on claw settings.

Emeralds are my favourite gem stone!

Julie, I love that ring! One of the options we talked about was having something a bit asymmetric like that- very pretty. (Is your birthday in October? My Mum won't let me wear her opal jewelry because my birthday isn't in October, and it's supposed to be bad luck for everyone else. It's hilarious because it's the only thing she's superstitious about- and even she thinks it's ridiculous!)

Ok, I'm glad everyone is behind the sideways setting- I'm going to tell the jeweler to go ahead with the ring as sketched. Unfortunately I'm going to have to wait until April when my Mum visits to actually get it!

No Ele, my birthday is in November but the ring has always been very lucky for me. I'm happy you have decided to have the ring made I believe it will be beautiful.
