My puffer coat is molting!

Is this just the nature of a coat stuffed with down, or did I get a lemon?

Can't return it...or maybe I could but otherwise I really like it. I bought it from Land's End last winter and it would leave some down fuzzies on my clothes in the back but I wore it anyway. Well, we are having a cold snap, so out it comes, and it seems like the fuzzies are much more than last year.

It doesn't shed anything from the outside, just the inside back. I don't really see leaks when I look inside the coat, but the back of my sweater needs a lint roller. Is this to be expected or is something wrong?

They almost all do that! Some advice - never pull feathers out if they are poking through as you will only make any hole bigger. If you can, work them back IN. This is different than an actual hole. In that case I'd return or use that special gear tape for nylon outerwear - they have it at REI.

I assume you mean it is leaking feathers? That is a fairly common problem with down coats, but it depends on the type of fabric they are made from. It also depends on the size of the feathers. I think what I am saying is the down/feather ratio. Not all down coats are just the smallest of down feathers, they can have some larger pieces also. The tips of the feathers are sharp and can push through the material like little needles, so it's hard to stop them. I would call Lands End. They may still help you even a year after the purchase.

Thanks Alaskagirl! I knew you would be a puffer coat expert. It isn't from holes...I don't even see where they are coming from. I don't even see them escaping. Maybe they get excited to escape only when the coat is being worn.

If they all do that I will keep it. But thanks Alasse, I started thinking that was probably true.

Haha! It's just the sharp ends poking though and getting stuck on your clothes- then when you remove the coat they cling to you and get pulled through. There's a balance between making the liner breathable and keeping the excitable feathers in. It's a rare down coat that doesn't shed a little, and when you wear black it feels as bad as a pet!

Sounds like Una has you sorted.

If this is really troublesome, check out the squall jacket also at Land's End. I have had this coat for years, and recently gave mine to my sister and bought myself another I like it so well. DH has one as well (from the men's department). Super warm and waterproof.

They all do this. In fact, my double-wrapped down sofa cushions do this.

I really don't have this problem with my add down coat, but they are crazy expensive. It's worth it to me to make it through bitter winters without having my sweaters covered in sweaters.

Um, I haven't had this problem with my Laundry by Shelli Seagal (sp?) down coat- my 1st ever- from last winter. It dropped maybe 2 feathers within the first couple of weeks, and I wore it *constantly* last winter and several times already this season.....I got it at Herberger's for around $180 on deep sale last year. I cant believe how much warmer a down coat is! Dumbass for someone who has lived in Mn all their life, lol. Good luck!

You know I would call LE and explain the problem..They may have a solution, or they may say it shouldn't do that and offer to replace...I have always found them just so accommodating...hope this helps
