My Magaschoni dream dress resurfaces on eBay...

Those of you who've been around a while may remember a couple of years back when I was dying over a Magaschoni dress on the Searle website: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....killing-me (See especially Angie's ideas on how she would wear it.)

SO convinced me to order it and I did, then the next day I got an email saying sorry, it was sold out in all sizes.

Now, like an old flame, it has reappeared to taunt me.

It's on eBay, new with tags. I thought the original was black but this is a gorgeous deep blue: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NWT-Ma.....s-Navy-Blu

It's not my size and would need to be taken in.

Sensible YLFers who aren't subject to losing their heads, please speak up. It's a bad idea to buy something I know won't fit without alteration, right?

I disagree, I think it's beautiful. If it is just one size too big, I would pounce. Even 2 sizes. Anything more than 2 sizes might need more serious reconstruction so I would avoid that.

CL -- Una was fainting over this dress too, and she had actually called the store for dimensions. If this one is similar to the original (and not an eBay second of some sort), it runs a bit small and shouldn't be too big to alter.

It's not final sale so I'm sorely tempted.

Well, if it still makes your heart jump two years later that is quite a dress. I colorway is slightly different, blue and charcoal with the front zipper not as high contrast as on the black. Do those changes bother you? Do you have a good tailor? This doesnt seem like a first time to try someone project....

OMG, I love it. LOVE. I agree with Sarah. If the color still makes your heart sing and you have a good tailor, I would pounce.

@Sarah A: I like the lower contrast zipper and I love the deep blue.

And I do have a very good seamstress who can handle complicated alterations.

I third those above. Do you have a fabulous tailor? Is it within a size of yours? If that is the case, pounce. You are still drooling after all this time.

I just want to make sure you are still drooling and it is a lost love. Sometimes the one that got away was meant to. And after this much time, is. It still your style. Just asking so there are no regrets later.

Sorry, I'm going to enable. Unless $100 is really too much, but otherwise, go! I think if you have loved something for two years that's a strong sign. If you have it you will find someplace to wear it. And if it is not tailorable then maybe you could just resell it.

@Peri -- $99.99 is very reasonable (and I'm sure it's a lot less than it was from Searle, though I don't remember the original price.)

I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth the after-market tailoring cost to scratch the itch of this dress. It's definitely a want and not a need, but we don't live on bread alone, right?

@Thistle -- yes, still my style.

My only concern would be that the fabric on both sections of the dress is quite different from the original. If that still appeals to you and you know its authentic, then it is absolutely worth a try. Anytime you still love something this amount of time later, you HAVE to take the opportunity to try it. I still have an item in mind that "got away" and I shudder to think how foolish I was to pass it up. Don't let this be a long-term regret.

@Echo -- the question of authenticity is a really good one. I was a little suprised when I looked at the seller's other items and saw that they're mainly bras in rather unusual sizes (28M?).

As the mother of a teenaged boy who spends half his life stalking flyboy sneakers on eBay, you'd think it would have occurred to me that authenticity might be an issue...

Without investigating, my instincts say this unlikely to be inauthentic. It doesn't look like something that would be profitable to fake. And if it is within two sizes, as Denise says, I say pounce! A good dressmaker will make it fit better than if it were in your size in the first place.

The price isn't bad, and you can return it if the tailor says it can't be taken in for whatever reason. Go for it!

I also think you should buy it and get it tailored if feasible! Especially since it is returnable -- then you can see if the reality of the dress meets your expectations after so long. It's beautiful

Oh, ladies -- you are so good to me.

I do think it makes sense to buy it and try it. I'll get the seamstress's opinion on alterations and if she's not optimistic, I'll return it.

For the record, when I talked to SO about it last night, he was in the "what are you waiting for" camp.

ETA: I just ordered it. Stay tuned...

Good choice on the purchase. I think anything that is still a want after 2 years deserves to be satisfied. Excited to see the pics.

Yay, I'm glad to see you bought it! If you're still thinking about it after 2 years, well then it's likely to have staying power.

I have had a similar experience with my turquoise leather moto, which I missed out on the first time around because they sent me pepto pink instead. It reappeared on the Neiman Marcus website a year later, and I pounced. Despite the fact that it cost significantly more the second time around, I don't regret it a bit!
