Others have been brave enough so here I go.

Two lessons: 1-I am bitterly sorry I started coloring my hair when I did. I wish I had consulted with my sisters before I started. Another reason I won't go into.

2-I wish I hadn't taken hairdresser's advice to do blonde highlighting. I wish that once I saw the results I just bit the bullet and had it mostly chopped off.

I'm going to show you some photos of me just a few months before I fell into the trap of "coloring the gray." I was 55 and I thought it was time and fell for propaganda. I had a few gray hairs then, but nothing noticeable unless you looked closely.

All went well for a few years, but over time my hair got blonder. I did do some blonde highlights once, but then I noticed that my own colored hair looked highlighted, so I stopped. I kept asking my hairdresser if it was time. She always said not yet. One day I brought in some photos of me with my original color and she was shocked. She tried to get it back but couldn't. I guess I would take some heavier duty dye.

So just over 2 years ago, certain that I'd have Helen Mirren hair, I started the grow out with a new hairdresser. She advised blonde highlights but I ended up even blonder and I hated it. My sisters and I got together and I found out that neither one colored their hair. They were both blue-eyed blondes and their hair only got darker and less blonde. I've examined both on different occasions and I'm sure they aren't lying. So I had some lowlights put in but I didn't like the result.

Last May I had the last of the light blonde highlights. Six months grow out.

I had a hard time finding decent photos of my hair just before I started. My original color had a lot of reddish tones--I could only find one outdoor photo.

So three photos of original.

One from last May with 4 month darling. I like this because shows my real hair texture. Fine and straight.

One from earlier this year.

Two current--19 years later. This should be about 3" natural hair on top.

In a couple of months I'm going to seriously deal the the change in color palette. I had a hard time with the blonde.
