Had a great day with the kids today taking in some of the Pan Am Games activities in my beloved Toronto. One of my favorite bits of going downtown is taking in the street style. Toronto is a large city with lots of diverse neighbourhoods, but we were essentially in the financial district and city hall area, a relatively conservative and "well-heeled" area. Lots of white-collar workers flitting about. Here's what I noticed:

  • Thank goodness I broke my Project 333 again in favor of black and white, because these seem to be the only colors people were wearing. The palette was so ubiquitous that gray, navy and light blue (usually in the form of a man's shirt) read as colorful. There was the very odd splash of coral-y orange, as well as a beautiful, rich, deep berry red (the red generally paired with black and white). Most people looked great, a tribute to the power of black and white!
  • Looks were generally tailored (as one would expect with business wear); however, there were some flippy skirts that looked really pretty; lots of smart shirt-dressed too. Lots of high-waisted pencil skirts too. Not so many pants on women, now that I think of it.
  • Flats seem to win the day with women; one well-dressed lady even had gray Nike trainers on a la Working Girl, and I thought it actually looked alright! (have I lost it?)
  • Hair, bags and accessories were sleek and minimal and generally obvious-label-free, very polished and professional, but not dull. I was happy to chat with a stylish (if I do say so) Torontonian who was wearing the same Stella & Dot pendant I had on!

I now feel that I understand the origin of my color propensities and style preferences - I realize they are often decidedly "Toronto core casual", probably because I spent so many years working and going out on the town in that area! So fun to observe and enjoy.

What street style are you enjoying lately?

PS - sorry I didn't snap any photos; was with the kids so both hands were in use shuttling them through the bustle.
