Men's attire for "black tie" event

My fiance is attending the Radio & Television Correspondent's Association dinner tomorrow night.

Obama, who attended last year, will not be in attendance but Biden will. This is a work event for him. His office told him that he need not wear a tux even though this is a black tie event but should wear a dark suit with a white shirt. His suit is black with a very subtle stripe (the stripe is hardly noticeable in pictures).

My questions is what should he do about a tie. He thinks he should wear his gold tie as it "best matches his suit" (his words). I'm wondering if he should wear a black tie so it looks more like a tux. II'd love to know what you all think???

I apologize for the last minuteness of this question. When he said he didn't need to wear a tux, I assumed the event was not black tie and he could wear any shirt/tie he chose. He just mentioned 20 minutes ago that the event is in fact black tie.

I'd have him wear the most conservative tie he has, but not black. Washington is a conservative town. What does the gold tie look like?

Then again, could he rent a dinner jacket at the last minute? He might be more comfortable in formal wear.

he has since vetoed the gold tie for a gray and black patterned one, very similar to what you suggested. i'm sure he could rent a tux but i don't think it's necessary if his office is telling him (and others) that a suit is acceptable. he wouldn't want to be the only one in a tux from his office.
