Debbie, get yourself to the MAC makeup counter,they are very helpfull there.I got my complementry makeup lesson there and I actually liked what they did.I like my makeup to look natural.For me very little goes a long way,if not ,then I look like a clown!

Same here. I cannot wear very much makeup without looking severe. The skin care is very important. I have been using Clarins products, but my dermatologist just told me that the good drugstore cleansers and moisturizers are just as good as the $100 ones. I have been using the expensive ones for a couple of years but now I want to change back to using the good ones at the drugstore. Right now I have Cerave.

I think I'm just going to grit my teeth and go to Sephora. I have been to MAC and they were very helpful, but I don't want to be restricted to MAC products. This is something I have been thinking about for ages but haven't come up with the guts to finally do it (though it's more of a financial issue at the moment). One of my friends is a huge Sephora fan and said she would go with me for moral support :p

I second the Mac counter. You don’t need to get all your products there, but at least you’ll get a good idea. I think they tend to do a better job than the gals at Sephora.

Changing your make up can prove to be very costly. I really like make up palettes, I received an Estee Lauder one last Christmas, it contains three lipsticks, two blushers, and six eye colours. All of the colours are complimentary making the palette pretty flop proof. They are in abundance at this time of year and may be worth a look.

I agree with the ladies above ...MAC is a good place to start....I can't even walk into Sephora....Like Maya, I would need a support person....

A light foundation gives such a boost to my more mature skin....I know it would be my ....If you could pick one item....:)

I agree that going to a counter is a great idea- you'll get more personal attention than at Sephora, not to mention a more relaxing shopping experience! I don't think it *needs* to be MAC, though- just find a brand whose look you identify with. My mum (60 yo) likes Clinique, and I'm personally a fan of Bobbi Brown. Her company look is very natural and pretty, and the coverup/foundation products are all really good.

I agree with all the other posters about going to a counter. For example, I have terribly sensitive skin and as a first step to remedy this, I went to The Body Shop to ask for specific advice about caring for my skin. Why Body Shop- they don't test on animals and they support Fairtrade initiatives. I stated using their sensitive skin range so I'm quite happy with that. In terms of makeup, I went to Urban Decay to get new foundation as they also don't test on animals and I quite liked the makeup of the girl on the counter. It looked quite natural with one noticeable pop of colour, rather than the girls who looked closer to drag queens than to beauty queens (miaow!) on many of the other counters. I've continued going back to this counter for the last six months for new bits and bobs when all my other makeup ran out!

I have sensitive skin so use Burts Bee's cleanser and Jason Naturals vitamin E cream. Doesn't irritate my skin or make it feel tight or flaky. I use natural 7th Generation baby wipes if I don't feel like washing my face.

For makeup, I use neutrogena SPF 70 mixed with almay tinted moisturizer all over skin and eyelids. Almay cream shadow that goes on with a finger, in beige. Two cllicks with the lash curler and lash architect mascara. Mac lipgoss in pink grapefruit.

For night - I do a bronze eyeliner on the bottom lashline occasionally and some peach blush. For extra I add a bronze/dark peach eyeshadow from lancome.

Keep it simple and make it easy on yourself!

While I've gone into Sephora, it's after a bunch of research - wanting to investigage a specific product. I don't think I could just go in there and shop for all new makeup or skincare - too overwhelming. I'll sometimes read the reviews on Makeup Alley for ideas - this has helped quite a bit.

In the meantime - another option is department store makeup counters. They'll often have 'events' happening where you can get a makeover or a skin care consultation or what have you. Even if there's no 'event' - I've been happy with the service at these counters - they are good about giving you a sample of something to try before you buy.

That said, I think Boof has a good suggestion - a whole bunch of companies have these 'kits' out right now, and these are usually a pretty good deal. You could just casually wander through the beauty dept. of your favourite dept. store and see what kind of kits the different companies have on special right now.

I've never been to MAC - but I hear they have very good makeup artists. Actually, I think I'll try the MAC counter myself next Always wanted to do that.

I went to Sephora for a specific foundation makeup (Makeup Forever High Definition) after doing a bunch of research as to which makeup would photograph well (family wedding).

Meanwhile, it's skincare that has me a bit more confused. There's just too many products out there, and I wouldn't know what goes with what. I mean, I do have something of a routine, but it's pretty basic. Start talking peptides, spheres, retinol, hyrodoxy this or that, and my brain just shuts down!

The Laura Mercier or Bobbi Brown counters have always been fabulously helpful and they have great color products that suit most everyone. Make an appointment during a weekday (if you try a MAC counter on weejend you will be overwhelmed by crush of people).
Most of my skincare is from drugstores - I use a blend of inexpensive and pricier products as nothing is "one size fits all".
You might start online or in a liibrary and gt some research done before you look for products. Dr. Leslie Baumann has a book called The Skin Type Solution which is simple and easy to follow (and she recommends products in all price ranges).
